Better chance of trading in midfield stars
rjay replied to Hellish Inferno's topic in Melbourne Demons
The problem is we set ourselves up as a middle of the ladder club at best with this type of thinking. We are giving away top end talent for short term fix that may move us up one or two spots on the ladder. Then put us back in the same position a few years later. Someone like Daisy if he's fit would be a good get, he has a few years left in him, he works very hard and would be a good role model on field but I doubt our chances. I know we need mids but I would still seriously look at taking Boyd if we had the chance. We don't have any 'A' grade key forwards at the moment, we have Hogan on the way and that is all. Clark showed promise and was playing good footy but could not be classified as an 'A' grade forward, a potential one yes but a better ruck option in my thinking and would add a midfielder with his ability to hit the ground running. Imagine a ruckman who could get 20 plus good possessions a game v one who gets next to none. Watts developing (where to play him), Fitz developing, Dawes a workhorse who can't get on the ground, Howe developing may be better high half or wing. We are seriously kidding ourselves if we think we have the forward line sorted out. -
Better chance of trading in midfield stars

Paying way over the odds...just about in the pensioner class with Sewell. -
I was for keeping Watts but if we have the chance to pick up Boyd then Watts would be an option for me. I think there are only a few players out of the current list now I would want to keep and he's not on it.

Silvia has always been overrated by supporters on this site. One incident yesterday, where the ball was at his feet and he didn't know it was there shows what I have been saying for a while now, he has little to no awareness and no peripheral vision. This problem added to what 'stuie' has pointed out above has held back his career. He has never had the potential to be a super star but he could have been a good player.

Maybe comes from the development posts here the other day, some real in depth journalism.

They don't need to lose Griffen, they need his experience and he will be captain next season. We above any other club know the damage done when you lose heart and soul senior players, add that Griffens ability and it would be a Melbourne like monumentally bad decision.

The little I have seen of him during one of the carnival games, this is on the money. He see's the game ahead and around him, picks good options and executes well. I'm starting to lean a bit the way of another poster on the SANFL and am less likely to see senior form being as an important marker as I have before. It is a more open chip, chip game. Quite a few highly rated players have struggled to realise their potential at AFL level. Gibbs and Trengove being prime examples. If we want a hard at it mid then I would look at Matt Crouch, again on very limited viewing but seemed the best clearance player in tight contested situations, a touch of Selwood about him. Dunstan and Sheed have been talked about in this area of the game but both seem to work a bit wider of the ball this guy is right at it.

Pedersen is being over rated on todays performance. Does things ok when the ball falls for him but other than that just doesn't work hard or run to the right spots when he needs to defend. Makes a lot of poor decisions.

We have 3 senior players worth jack...., Frawley, Garland and Jones and a few who are senior in years but have not made it out of adolescence.

2014 he's the man.

Look after today we would have to consider it but I don't think they have much currency. The club need to tell us what is wrong with Trenners and if it's nothing then first thing they need to do is play him back at Casey and next season take the captaincy away and tell him to play footy and concentrate on getting what he had in his first season.I would take Boyd and build the forward line around him and Hogan. Nup, Watts for Gibbs maybe, Yarran and a pick to us...

The mess in the whole club won't be cleaned up over night. The mess that has been caused by previous administrations just beggars belief but it's there for all to see. Unfortunately everything is on hold now at the club, there will be a new head of football, a new president and a new coach and still some of the board to go for mine. That is a lot of people sitting in interim positions who know they won't be there next year and the players know this. Craig really gave the game up if it wasn't already up by saying he didn't blame Watts for waiting and seeing what happens. They're all waiting now except for the few who have a real pride in their performance.

No, I count Frawley, Garland, McDonald, Jones and Viney...what's that, 5. We could add Hogan who is not officially on the list yet and I would like to have a look at Taggert, Barry and maybe Davis. But the rest can all go. Probably a bit unfair on the new boys from this year so lets give them a reprieve.

My biggest concern with Jimmy is that I've yet to see him kick a ball more that 30mtrs, he continually chips the ball around. This is good old SA footy at it's best and one reason why we need Roos or Eade as coach next year and not Craig or Williams.

No longer a hypothetical I would say. We are all but guaranteed the pp now. Boyd pick one, quality mid pick 2 or 3 and next pick whatever that is. Get over the odds for Silvia as free agent compo. Trade anyone but Frawley, Garland, McDonald, Jones and Viney for hardened mids around 24 - 26 yo. Look at free agency. Get Roos....get Walsh ...and hope Jackson is the messiah.

Baz & Hammer great comedy team with straight man Harley. Should have a morning breakfast program on FM radio...have these guys done any home work.

You don't make draft decisions based on the assumption we might stuff up. ...and Hartung = Blease without the red.

If the opportunity is there we take him, you just don't pass up on that.

The trouble with players like Mzungu is that it's hard to know how well they would play outside the Freo system. Some players work well in their environment and not at other clubs. Griffen I don't think is gettable at all, he will step up as their skipper next season. Thomas has the work rate and ability we require and I would see him as a target, given he is fit and able to remain fit although there are some doubts about that. Whether he would be interested in us is another matter.

Sylvia is a free agent like daisy. So nothing...

The only gauge we can get on Boyd is that he was doing it as an under ager as Hogan was last year against older players. He is rated very highly but as you say some don't work out. I thought we took a punt on Hogan when he hadn't done it against men last year and it looks like we got that one right so if we went with Boyd I would trust that Todd and the boys are on the money again.

HD myself...

Agree on this 'ThreeOne' But not on this, Grundy will be a very good player for the Pies. I still think Clark is our best ruck and if played there solves one midfield problem. Clark into the ruck Boyd at FF and look at others to trade for best deal and pick up some mids. Montagna at the end so no and Armitage a trade for one of our other forwards. Not worth a top pick.
