I'll stand by what I said about Bennell. Normally I actually think he's quite good as a small defender, and I think he went under-recognised in 2011. But his job on Saturday night was awful. Seriously. His man was Aaron Hall - who kicked 2 goals and was dangerous every time he went near it. By comparison, in the Suns game he was completely locked down by McGrath and had nowhere near the impact. Bennell was second to the contest, didn't push hard at all and genuinely looked disinterested. And as for the game itself, the umpiring was atrocious - they refused to take the conditions into account, paid totally random free kicks and were generally awful. And much of the team did look in second gear. Certain players were very good - Clark, Jones, Bate, Magner all come to mind - but others, such as Nicho and Gysberts just didn't seem to want to get involved and chase. Sure, I was [censored], but I was [censored] for a reason.

Can I put it out there that Neeld is a big video user? Remember that video of him with Pendlebury and his breaking it down? This is the first time he has coached the MFC, and as such I think we need to wait and let him now adjust and do his thing with the players, aided by the assistants. That said, Bennell better not be given phantom punches.

We did get killed by the OOB free kicks. In proper footy none of those would be paid, and that was a big chunk of our contest strategy. But there were a lot of very awful umpiring decisions, compounded by the fact that it took the umpire forever to signal what the free kick was for. See the weird Bartram 50m penalty.

I'll Judy point out that in the ten minutes or so before we left Metricon where we watched the third game, it was interesting to note in the last game that the umpiring was much fairer? Just an observation.

Honestly, first half of the season is very rough - we play all of last years top 8 by rnd 11 IIRC

Beyond not playing the corridor and going the punch to the crumb, there's not much to tell to be honest. That said, our zoning was VERY good. Clearance work looked better.
