I still dont believe our biggest issue is who we draft - it is our development of who we draft - the players we have drafted over the years hit a ceiling and dont seem to progress to that next level. Perfect examples are Bate and Dunn - MFC were applauded when we picked these two as they were both bottom aged footballer who we "sure" to go well into the top 10 in the following years draft had we not picked them up. I will take a small shot at Col Sylvia - although not quite as mercurial, he could sit alongside Stevey J with his ability to bust open games - he just doesnt do it as often as SJ. The only draft pick, picked up early who has delivered on his early selection in my opinion is Frawley ( Big disclaimer - this post doesnt include anyone from Mortons draft back - under 23 players are not developed or mature so the Jury is still out) Now talk is cheap but I am hoping with the plethora of coaches ( with Neeld's no nonsense approach) that they eek ever inch of talent our players have and are able to develop and reach their maximum potential

And there we have it - For all the doom and gloomers - it is not like we had to use the picks or lose them. Next years draft uncompromised and apparently a super draft and we have picks in hand so we have bid i the mini draft to what we consider our maximum and walked away. Next

Tim Harrington's cautious approach to the mini-draft
nutbean replied to Supreme_Demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
The Gunston trade is public knowledge and I still have no idea how that one works. To suggest that everyone knows what everyone is bidding and what the other club will accept is a nonsense. Edit - make no mistake - trading is a poker game - cards played close to the chest. Everyone can see the flop but the bidding is an unknown. We may have got Crouch for what we wanted to pay but it didnt play out that way. It took a bigger bid from Adelaide to get there. So far Warnock is going to Hawthorn, Carlton and now GC - does that sound like everyone knows what everyone else is doing ? -
He did not play well this year but I think the poor captaincy is tainting the thoughts on his playing performance. I dont want him to Captain but very happy for him t be at the club and prove this season an abherration

Tim Harrington's cautious approach to the mini-draft

Sorry - if you dont have go you will never know. By your logic next year there will be no bids at all for Jack Viney as he will be coming to us under the F/S law. We went in there with what we wanted to spend. Others had to spend more to get them - so be it -
Tim Harrington's cautious approach to the mini-draft
nutbean replied to Supreme_Demon's topic in Melbourne Demons
yes there is - we were looking at either O'Meara OR Crouch - GC were always in the box seat for O'Meara but we didnt know how Adelaide would play it. If they didnt want to put two draft picks down then we were in. Its not poor at all . We werent prepared to put down three -

We offered a compo and pick 12 - are they worth three picks ? who knows -
agreed - but i think we get something for him ( but not a whole lot)
-
Except that we could pressure on GC to give us something by dealing with say Carlton, Hawks or who ever else may be interested. Warnock would have to want to go but we could get a little "competitive tension" into the process
-
No - we offered 12 and a compo but wanted a top 25 pick back in return

Umm Campbell Brown does play tall but he is 179 cm - not quite CHB

Josh Kennedy says hello ( And Ben McGlyn also waves - although I think he still would be borderlne at Hawks) Edit - the reason they would be giving Lisle away is the same reason the two above were released - there are players at Hawthorn ahead of them. They gave Kennedy away as they believed there to be better options in the midfield - however it goes back to what I have banged on about for ever and a day - in so many cases, you dont know what you have got until the player reaches 23/24 years of age. Therefore you are at risk trading out these young players that havent reached any sort of maturity

In exactly the same way Beamer did. Beamer got his VC stripped for an off field indescretion and took it on the chin and went about resurrecting his reputation. Should not Brad Green face the reality that although he did no "wrong" to the club, he should be judged that he did not do the right things as Captain. Looking at Junior's captaincy over the two years of horrific football, there was little ( always a little bit on here) question as to whether he led by example and was worthy of the post.

I dont think the dig at our FD is much of a dig either - he is stating what we all knew.

There is a difference in being an introvert or shy off the field and having confidence in your ability on the field. Robbie was baulking and blind turning opponents on the field from his 1st game - never lacked confidence in his ability as a footballer. Bottom line is - he let his football do the talking.

Harbrow - Bullies were expected to be there abouts this year Campbell Brown ? What I do believe is no A grader has gone to either club excepting Ablett ( and maybe Richitelli but he was mightily [censored] off at Voss)

I love Beamer but in what hemisphere did he have a better year than Marc Murphy

In fact all of our coaches get recycled in some shape or form. Bailey at the Crows, Riley at Carlton, Daniher at WCE, Hutchison at the Tigers and Balme at the Cats. Northey got gigs after us and Barassi went to the Swans.

The very big could word - has all the tricks except one - that is getting the ball 20 times plus per game. Once he learns that trick he will be a gem

Don't worry - one day the penny will drop and you will get it. ( wtf ! what did that mean ? i never got what i was meant to get !)

Im dont usually speculate but when a player in his prime signs a one year contract only it sends one message - big bucks or I'm off
