I can only go by the numbers. 18 disposals, 5 marks 1 goal. Three weeks ago we'd have taken that from him and been thrilled.
-
He mentioned 40 or so games who has probably never played in the midfield before. I know Watts did in fact play mid as a junior from time to time, but Neeld might not know that. Trengove plays there all the time and Grimes has done so for us on the odd occasion, but I don't recall Watts being played as a mid. He was listed on the wing today.
-
This is Rockliff who slipped to the PSD because nobody wanted him in the ND right? The guy who, If I recall, topped the goalkicking in the U18 carnival but was apparently too small for a forward and too slow for a mid. That he went that low is a damning indictment on every recruiter in the country. He was always going to be a star.

Magner and Watts can be inferred quite easily from the press conference. I'll give another two when I get around to watching the game.

Changes for next week vs West Coast
RalphiusMaximus replied to titan_uranus's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'd say at the very least we'll see Morton, Seller and Strauss come into the side. They have all shown a bit in the VFL the last couple of weeks. If Petterd is over whatever he had he's probably in as well. Dunn seems a pretty good chance after three goals, but McDonald may sneak past him and take that spot. I don't know if there would be room to bring both of them in. Tapscott I would have in if fit, but I don't know if they want to risk him just yet. He might be scheduled for another run at Casey before coming in and the road trip to Perth is a bad one for someone who isn't 100%. Outs are harder without seeing the game, so I'll leave that up to others. -
Well, for all the negativity, I can find a couple of massive positives in the mess. Obviously Magner. Had a really solid debut and will keep getting games. Tynan from most reports acquitted himself very well. Neelds press conference indicates that he was more than happy with Watts' game, so he's clearly improving his form from the pre-season slump. I might finally be able to go to a game of football and not hear drunk yobbo's yelling out "Just kick the F****** thing"

Well, I haven't had a chance to watch the game yet, and only caught a few minutes on the radio, so in general I don't have a huge amount to add. I can say that the comments attacking the gameplan may be a bit premature. Last year (and the years before that) we saw our midfielders opting for blind bombs forwards whenever they were under pressure. This resulted in small packs of opposition mids and halfbacks congregating around 40m ahead of the play and waiting for the ball to land in their laps. I don't think you can blame the current coach for the players repeating the pattern of the last few years under the previous coach. This one has to be put squarely on the players forgetting their instructions and reverting to their default "panic" mode of play. I am very curious to know what changed in the third quarter. We went into half time basically level, then were blown away, seemingly in a matter of minutes. Can anyone tell me what changed? Once again, I have not seen the footage yet, but it sounds like Magner had a great debut. Not only did he top our posession count, but he snared a couple of goals. Hell of a good start to his career. I am also a little puzzled by some of the comments about Watts. He had 18 disposals, 5 marks and a goal. Surely after his form in the NAB we should be happy to see that sort of output? Overall, I am not nearly as bothered as many of you who saw the game. I know that Neeld was reluctant to delist players when he first arrived because he had not seen them play and train. I also know that he is set to trade or delist a lot of players at the end or this year. It seems pretty clear to me that he is looking at our list to see who can play the way he wants them to and who isn't up to it. There is a very good reason I started asking who will be sacked at the end of this season before the pre-season had started. That is when the clean-out begins, and I think a lot of people will be shocked by how harsh it is. Until then everyone on the list is auditioning. Today a lot of guys gave a lemon.

I just find it funny looking at their head to head that last season's top goal kickers for both sides play for us now. -

I wasn't there, but the word is he copped an elbow to the face behind play. I don't know if they have any sort of video review system in place for the VFL though, so we may not see a report out of it. -
The Swans are a recycled player machine
RalphiusMaximus replied to Ron Burgundy's topic in Melbourne Demons
The Swans' admin has said on many occasions that given their location in the rugby heartland they simply can't afford to bottom out as Melbourne clubs do from time to time. If they stop performing they will see their members vanish. As such they have adopted a different approach to list building and choose to target players who will fill a role for them at other clubs rather than trying to get high draft picks and develop them. They are also one of the leaders when it comes to tapping external markets, such as the recruitment of Mike Pike. It has clearly been a good tactic for them as they have been a very successful side for a number of years and show no sign of dropping out of the 8. -
Liam Jurrah's return to training
RalphiusMaximus replied to La Dee-vina Comedia's topic in Melbourne Demons
Apparently he's just had the last pin removed from his wrist and is feeling much better about things as a result. Is now with the rehab group rather than running laps on his own. Sounds like a positive step. -
See the bold section. You can't take marks on the lead if your teammates won't kick the ball in front of you. Watts can lead until he's blue in the face, but until we teach our midfielders how to pass to a leading forward it will do him no good at all. They either kick a blind bomb to the "hot spot" or the kick a floater over his head that forces him to stop and give his defender a nice ride up to the ball. Sam Blease is one of the few players on our list who can spear a low pass at eye-level to a leading forward, and he has a nasty habit of undercooking it and making it a half-volley. Yet another basic skill we seem to have mislaid.

I don't think we made a mistake letting him go when we did. The error was in the way it was handled. He should have been aware from the outset that it was going to be his last season with us, and with the plan to transition him into coaching clearly spelled out. Instead, you had a guy who played a pretty good season and thought he'd done enough to be kept on when the non-playing part of the club had already stamped his papers. You need to bear in mind that keeping Junior on the list would have cost us draft picks. We needed to move players on to make room for the next generation to come into the side. Who was going to go in his place so that we could take some kids in the draft? While I think it was poorly handled by the club, I also think that the way he responded was possibly the most selfish thing I've ever seen from him. He wanted to hang on for one more year with a body that was beginning to fail and prevent a kid from getting the chance that he was given. The club had a plan in place for him and were planning on having him move straight into a coaching/mentoring role, but he chose to walk away in a snit. Basically, it was the right decision, but the way it was handled on both sides was pretty poor form.

Given that we've activated both compo picks, I think it's safe to say that we'll be seeing the axe fall at the end of the season. I have no idea who it will be, but some familiar faces will be leaving the club.

Interesting to see the pessimism surrounding Jurrah. A lot of people have already written him off it seems. -
I wouldn't read anything much into this game in terms of scoreline or how competitive the giants were. There were a lot of mitigating factors. 1- Swans played some of the worst football I've ever seen from them. 2- Umpiring was very one-sided. You may have noticed that the Sydney forwards couldn't buy a free. Imagine how the score would have blown out if the frees in marking contests had been payed. 3- The Swans really weren't trying. They were strolling around the field doing training drills for a lot of the night. This of course contributed to point 1. As for Mohr, I thought he was pretty solid tonight. If I recall, he improved drastically last year. Before that he was never in contention for an AFL spot. He just happened to click at a time when GWS could grab him outside the draft.
-
I've been telling people to get him early as a bargain on Dreamteam and supercoach. He's not the sort of guy who will sit back and only play a half dozen games. He's going to give it 100% and try to lead on the field for the entire year. Given his price,. the numbers he racks up are pretty good.

Casey Scorpions v Williamstown
RalphiusMaximus replied to The Song Formerly Known As's topic in Melbourne Demons
Funny. The team lists showed more doggies than demons. Must have been a few late changes. Good to hear that some of our boys are finding touch and confidence. We'll need both if we want to get a decent start to the season. -
