Another positive out of this, i won't have to wait another 6 long weeks until draft day, the day that has become our grand final of late.
-
We were struggling to pay 92.5% of the cap for next year, let alone 100%. We would have front loaded the hell out of it. This is where such supporter events like last August help out immensely. It has allowed us to pay the maximum in the cap, and look what we have netted. If the majority of his pay is spread over his 1st 2 years, there won't be much of a problem with retaining our kids in the future either!

Massive news indeed. Freo would of told him they can't meet Brissie's demands and Brisbane would have told him that they weren't going to reduce their asking price. Been tweeted he has agreed to a 4yr deal. Get ready for this place to go into overdrive!!!
-
The Lions were thinking that picks 8 & 12 would be enough. If we were serious, i'd throw pick 12 and a compo pick at them. But there is no chance of landing him. Crows no doubt want the best compo for him, but why would he come to Melbourne when he has stated he wants to go back home. Mitch Clark all over again.
-
After finding out that the role of the dice didn't go our way today (again ), it immediately went through my head "That boy is our last hope"............"No, there is another".
-
i think he's basing it on the assumption that Brissie will guarantee that they will refuse to deal with Freo, thus forcing clark into the psd and for us to collect
-
i think it will be an offer of either pick 12 or one of the compo picks + a highish second rounder (which we will gain from a swap of Warnock/Maric/Bate + our own second rounder)
-
was in the same draft as Nathan Jones.
-
That just about seals it for mine. He'll go to Fremantle for biscuits now!
-
Goddard can play in every position on the ground, bar the ruck. He is one of the game's best players, plus he is an out and out star. I would definitely give up 2 speculative picks for him. The only problem is, should we win the lottery and he come to the MFC, he will be tagged every game and we don't have anyone to prevent it from happening.
-
That's what i'm thinking. If Rawlings went up and spoke to him and was told he's not interested, why on earth would we make a play for him? Maybe Clark would be happy to come to us, should the Freo deal fall through.

Our mid first round pick could end up being potentially pick 12/13 if you include ladder positions and all other PP's and CP's being activated for next years draft, after first round pick would then be around pick 15-20. Hardly world beaters. Putting it into context, we got Bate and Dunn with similar picks in 2004. The MFC and supporters are putting too much importance on these picks.

How the hell would we give them a compo pick that is better than Adelaide's? The Crows are likely to finish in the bottom 8 for the next few years, if we finish above them, which we should do, we cannot match their compo pick. Our mid 1st rounder comes after the teams in the bottom 8 have their 1st round picks (Adelaide's compo pick, coming directly after their 1st round pick thus beats out Melbourne's mid compo pick. Melbourne's compo pick after our first rounder again would come after Adelaide's, if we finish above them.) It shows how much value we have placed on these picks (far too much IMO), as we will most likely have picks roughly at around early-mid teens (factoring in PP's and GWS's GC and ADELAIDE compo picks, and possibly the Doggies compo pick too)

Yeah but the problem is, they are 2 years away from even getting onto our list. Then they will need some time to get accustomed to the game at AFL level. If we are serious about winning a premiership, we need to commit with a group at some point, not just continue to bring in kids. If we kept on doing that, the current group of young kids will be about to retire, before we decide to have a dip.

why do we seem to value these compensation picks so much??? If we were to use them next year in the "superdraft" along with everyone elses compo picks, that would further lower where our picks would be. Then there is also PP to include. Our compo picks might end up being picks 12 & 20ish, given that the Crows will probably finish outside the 8 and thus, their After 1st round pick which GWS might get, will be more valuable than our mid 1st round pick. These picks aren't exactly world beaters and won't garantee us netting a star with picks 12&20, and if we weren't willing to give them up for say a Crouch, who is more likely than not going to turn out better than say these picks 12&20 will, i'd be very disturbed with the MFC recruting department being so naive and blind.

As strong as next year's draft is meant to be, it will probably mean that every team will use their compo picks in that draft, further diluting it. The players we might target may not end up being there. It might better suit us to give away these picks for players that we really want, now.

Let's assume for a second, that the age is correct. Pick 4 + compo pick for O'Meara + Pick 9, how doesn't our 2 compo picks + Warnock for O'Meara better that deal??? Again, i understand that there are going to be a million trade suggestions, 10 of which are probably going to come to fruition.

How is it that the Saints are found to be in breach of the salary cap, yet can possibly go unsanctioned???

Too true AoB, he's from Dongara, 3.5 hours north of Perth. Moved down for schooling, which imo would help in him moving interstate, as he has already moved away from home. Very similar to the situation our own Trengove was in, Naracoort is almost halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne, he moved to Adelaide for schooling, and now he finds himself in Melbourne. That one has seemed to work out pretty well. Why not O'Meara???
-
I'm sorry but this really is a no contest. Our current version kicks the shizenhousen out of the one above it.
-
There seems to be just about one every year now. But that's the thing with midfielders, they're a dime a dozen. I want O'Meara, because he has what none of our mids seem to have, class. O'meara oozes it, no one on our list does, not even 'you know who' did.
-
Yep i think so too. Apparently the Crows are keen on the Saints Tom Lynch. He is a Matthew Bate clone. Though Bate is superior in his lead up ability. Pick 12 + bate i would gladly give up for Dangerfield, and as i eluded to earlier, maybe even swap our 2nd round pick for their 3rd round pick. Given how shallow this draft is, the chance of the player you want with your 2nd round pick will probably be likely to be there at your 3rd round pick, given you could throw a blanket over 50 kids with the mid-selection picks. so pick 12, Bate and pick 31 for Dangerfield and pick 50
-
the compo picks alone won't net us o'meara, but throw in warnock and it would get the deal done. one i would be very willing to make. as for dangerfield, pick12 + a player (which we are willing to part with) won't get it done either, as he's contracted, which makes it harder. Some jossiling of picks might be required, like our 2nd rounder for their 3rd or something. if we went down this path, with viney coming in next year, we're gonna then need to go on a KPP drive over the next few years.
-
there is quite a bit of a wait between trade week and draft day, i expect an announcement to be made during this period. Offers maximum media exposure
-
Let's throw Warnock in whilst we're at it! No, i'm serious! Effectively Scully picks + Warnock for O'Meara, which has been mentioned before Pick 12 + Morton + Bate for Crouch The only downside to this is that we are going to need to wait a year to reap the rewards. WIth Viney coming in along with O'Meara and Crouch, all we would need is to boost our tall stocks. We have plenty of cap space, so go after them in trade weeks to come, when we are really pushing for a serious tilt. Who knows, by that time Watts and Cook might be firing and Frawley, Garland and McDonald (of the Tom variety) might be holding down the fort very nicely.
