That's what I thought too. The players were obviously crapped off like the rest of us, what's to explain? It's probably part of the AFL's procedures to call for an explanation before taking any action, which seems reasonable to me - it just so happens that in this case it's obvious what happened, but policy is policy. I imagine our response will be along the lines of "the players were disappointed in the result, the tweets have all been removed, blah blah blah...".

My posts, of course, have assumed Martin is not fit. If The Experience is fit then it's a no-brainer, and much less interesting to talk about.

Kreuzer's an exceptional circumstance because he seemed to have developed his full suite of coordination and superior fitness already, which is generally the big question over the very large blokes. Josh Fraser and Jeff White were similar. I agree with the general gist of what you're saying though. Raw or not, Gawn has been playing in the ruck for all of his sporting life. He'll probably struggle around the ground for fitness and whatnot, but there's one thing he should be able to do is contest physically in the ruck contests for a large portion of the game. And as you said Billy, if worst comes to worst he can be subbed off; though that would leave us in the position of having Dunn as the primary ruck which is a bit scary. The other more obvious thing that Gawn has over the others is a shirtload of height. He's 15cm taller than Newton and 16 taller than Dunn. Anyone ever stood next to someone 16cm taller than them? That is a mega difference, and I believe would just about cancel out any of the other advantages Newton or Dunn have on its own.

+1 Doesn't matter how "unready" he is. If he's the only specialist ruck available and fully fit, then we've got no choice. Plan B (Spencer) and Plan C (The Experience) have been scratched, Plan D (Campbell) is not yet fit enough; so we move to Plan E. Combining two part timers should be Plan Z. Golden opportunity to give him a taster if nothing else.
-
We can't go in with Newton and/or Dunn as the only rucks, surely. If Martin's out then it's got to be Gawn, no matter how raw.

Precisely, Artie. As you and rpfc have alluded to, this isn't denting flag aspirations at all, so what's the issue? It might be the difference between finishing 7th and 9th this year, that's not a big deal to me. The biggest disappointment for me is that Jake Spencer isn't going to be able to cash in on such a golden opportunity as he is/was clearly the second choice first ruck. Given that I don't think the club will consider Gawn to be ready then it's got to be Stef Martin now doesn't it? First ruck isn't the position he's been 'designed for', he's the specialist second ruck. Is he physical enough or good enough to carry the burden basically on his own? Huge opportunity for him to show everybody he is. As C&B said: time to step up, your club needs you. Don't get me wrong, I am spewing about the Trengove thing though. Edit: Didn't know Martin was injured. Now that is just rotten luck.

No, for the same reason as Watts. If we're going to have a sacrificial lamb - which is what a non-ruckman playing in the ruck is - then I'd prefer it not be someone so critical to the side. So it's Dunn, or perhaps as Red Sox suggested, Warnock in to the ruck for mine.
-
Agreed. Wouldn't hate to see Evans promoted (in the spot of Bennell) either.
-
I just think it makes things interesting :-)
-
Hasn't been snapped in half [whilst playing in the ruck], I meant.
-
Indeed. I'm surprised Dunn hasn't been, but he's expendable anyway.
-
Yes, but "shut up shop", "take the year off", "see you all next year"? No doubting this is disappointing and a big dampener on the week, but some of these reactions are way over the top. There's still an absolute s-load of this season to go; it's not even remotely over yet. The biggest thing I'm disappointed about is that this would've been an absolutely golden opportunity to see what big Jake is made of as first ruck. Not to be.

You're being a bit silly, dazz.

The wrist slashing here is absolutely unbelievable. Get a grip.

The logic here doesn't work. The sport is not falling down. In order to sign a massive TV rights deal there must be a lot of people watching, more than ever, perhaps. If the sport was falling down people would not be attending matches and would not be watching it on TV. In order for the business to be growing, the sport has to be growing as well.
-
He doesn't have the ego, but he always strikes me as having supreme self-confidence - how relaxed does he look in front of a TV camera for example? If this self-confidence is able to be harnessed in the correct way then it should be a huge asset to him.

Kicking in is a minor tactical issue. It's something that needs improving but kicking in doesn't hold a candle to the importance of pressure and intensity, which is where we bottomed out on in the West Coast game.

Which rule is that? If you're that confident, quote it.

Demetriou's an extremely progressive administrator. IMO out of any of the administrators since the commission was formed he's the one who has made the best progress in creating fairness and equity while growing the game. Some may have a few quibbles here and there with the way he operates and some of the bits and pieces he's implemented, but looking at the big picture I'd say he's the best administrator the game has seen.

Definitely the Sylvia back to back goals. The boys and the crowd were reflecting the same energy I was feeling. It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.

Matty Warnock won't go. He's the kind of player coaches love, because he's built like a man mountain and has pretty good leg speed, and he always makes a contest. I get the impression Bails loves him as well. He's fourth choice tall at the moment because he doesn't provide any drive, but as Rivers is out injured (and I'm assuming he won't be available next week) then Warnock will remain in for his defensive skills. So for me: In: Macdonald Out: Grimes (inj) Only the mandatory change, and it's like-for-like. I realise Bate et al weren't flash, but dropping anyone from a team that won by 96 points is unnecessarily harsh, and I'm not sure any changes would add that much value anyway. I'd consider Newton for Bate perhaps, but it's a stretch. I actually thought Dunn wasn't dreadful in the ruck; competed better than I thought he would anyway. I'm hesitant to upset the team balance that much by making non-like-for-like changes like bringing Martin in, despite the fact that I'm a fan of his. Don't want to disrupt the successful formula.

I always thought that Moloney and Jamar were two different people, but I'm starting to wonder. ESP...
-
No. The message that would send is "you were a very naughty by and that behaviour is totally unacceptable! Until you play well next week, then it's fine". The club set a clear standard for off-field behaviour - revoking Moloney's punishment is revoking the standard.

Needed to lift, and did. I love football again.

Had nothing to do with the 22 who played today of course
