WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BALIC
buck_nekkid replied to ignition.'s topic in Melbourne Demons
Really? How do you judge that his negotiating skills are horrible when you have NO IDEA what his desired outcome, or minimal negotiating position, actually is? It is not life and death, FMD! He is not a hostage negotiator. I would prefer that the Dees are known as decent to deal with - the first step in building trust to establishing a frame for negotiation. you slag him off and have not one f’ing clue. -
Port the big winners in Trade Week?
buck_nekkid replied to Bring Back Barassi's topic in Melbourne Demons
Mr Watts performs 30% of the time. Mr Motlop performs 30% of the time. That means in 9% of the time both Mr Watts and Mr Motlop will perform. (I made those numbers up, so don't hate me for them!). Port have gone 'all in'. It will be interesting to see if fresh starts help these two. As for Mr Rockliff, who dies he replace? Where does he actually fit into this team (I think Wines and Grey are ahead of him). If Paddy Rider is injured (or doing time, just saying..) no Lobbe. JW to ruck for Port? It is a big gamble, and I am not convinced on Port. Weren't as good as their ladder possie suggested this year, and failed to beat the Weagles on their own deck when it counted. Who won the trade period? Probably all the media hacks that get paid for an unsubstantiated opinion. This is hay-cutting season for them! (Plough, take a bow you opinionated [censored]) -
How many times does this stupid [censored] rumour have to be denied, by Hogan, his manager and the club? Sheesh!
-
A weak draft doesn’t mean all the players are ‘weak’. It means there is a perceived lack of high quality talent that are automatic top picks. If we get talent that meets our needs, we can pick up gems in the second and later rounds. Remember, the number a player goes for means little in the bigger scheme of things. Hunt vs Toumpas, for example.

Best wishes to Jack in his future, and thanks for your service. Now back to the main game- building a list and a plan to deliver sustained success.

Blind bidding would be awesome. Player is announced, club makes its offer. BANG! Player goes to club, club has reduced points to bid elsewhere. Teams getting desperate. After the event, they can rank the picks on the ‘points value’ to determine which was the number 1 pick etc. Great sport! Would be worth watching, and less like watching paint dry. All the spurts in the media will then crap on about ‘how much’ a draftee might be worth, driving up and down perceived value. Get it done Gill!
-
Maybe he isn’t going to nominate a club, and stay? This site will explode! 500 pages of tripe guaranteed!

Stupid [censored], where [censored] = ladies front bottoms

Don’t care what his dad thinks. Make your call, Jack. Get the deal done. Close this damned thread. Enough already.

I think we need three picks, which can include upgrades (using later picks)? That is my belief, but there are others here with a deeper level of understanding
-
Replace Watts with Watts. Love it, do the deal!
-
No it doesn’t, it values him at 30+49. We would need to convert these to that pick 22 for it to be worth that. This points system is abstract and leads to ‘false’ calculations. Who would trade 22 for these two picks? We wouldn’t! By your logic, Watts is worth Balic + 30. I think that is a better way to look at it. Late 2nd rounder plus targeted player. I think the club would be happy with that, if no salary is paid out too.
-
A different way to look at it, esp Jones and Goody: https://www.smartcompany.com.au/people-human-resources/mk-what-this-advisor-learnt-from-firing-someone-they-deeply-admired/

Welcome to Demonland: Jake Lever

In 12 months, we won’t be arguing over which picks, but whether he is one of the top players in the AFL. Very nice get, thank you very much. -
Surplus to needs now, but could be the best get of all time in 2 years if/when Pedo retires (near certainty) Hogan departs (Freo seem to already be working at this) Weids doesn’t come on as hoped. (I think he will, but 50:50 according to many here) with 2 of these 3 scenarios, it still pays off with one of these scenarios, it creates competition and pressure for spots, and may expand or change roles - like defender or ruck/forward option. One of our late second rounders and a used cotton bud should get it done.

186. An appropriate point to reflect. only JW and Jones left from that one, I think.
-
Going away to clear his head so he can decide where he wants to go. Sounds like not many suitors, and no one prepared to pay the price.
-
T mac forward. O Mac at FB. Hannan forward, Trac in the midfield. Oliver in the midfield, Lewis behind the ball as ‘quarterback’. Vandenberg and Maynard in the mix. Not bad, need Stretch or other outside runner I think.

WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - HARLEY BALIC

I’m hoping Balic is a 4th rounder, or whatever we have leftover from other deals. Think this will go down at the end of the period, rather than early. I don’t think there will be other deals contingent on this. -

Confucius say “Lever in hand, better than 2 fulcrum in bush” smart fella, that Confucius. Lever ready to go now, draft pick 2018 may be good 2020. behavioural economics here is clear. We have taken the lower risk payout early rather than higher risk payout later. With optimism bias, we may believe we could grab 2 superstars with those picks. Reality suggests our strike rate is lower than that. we also have a good recent record of lower picks delivering the goods. The deal is about lower risk, faster reward with a dose or reality thrown in. On this basis - and where we are at, it’s a good deal. We will know in the next couple of years if it is a great one. -
So what you are suggesting is Barrett knows of a spud who will be going to a team as a role player, but will end up being a on 'penalty rates' (above their pay grade). Isn't this Motlop to Adelaide?

I think the suggestion is that the FD communicated their thoughts, and JW implied his own meaning. From this, it can be assumed that the FD saw that JW and the club were really not on the same page from this event. This is concerning in itself. If the conversation was about not negotiables and his buy in, this distance between FD and player is highly significant. From the comment in the press ‘JW wants a relationship coach, one who not only tells him his deficits, but also praised his strengths’. This sounds like he is looking for a club that will blow smoke up his rear and tell him how good he is. I dont think this is the hard edged, success focused approach we see emerging at Melbourne. It will be sad if this is the case, but this gap seems to me to be the issue behind all of this.

A question (and I am not diving back 70 pages or so...). For the conspiracy theorists, didn’t Connors say something to the effect that Melb had done ‘everything right’ in the wat this was handled in one of the early pressers?
