He was restricted during the preseason because of hip surgery, played a few games where he impressed with Casey and then didn't play last week because he was an emergency. Then he cops Geelong first up. As I said: "Tough gig!"

It could be interesting viewing with the senior debut of Jack Watts for Casey and the return from injury of Ben Cousins for Coburg.

Based on past experience the official injury list has little credibility and I'm predicting here and now that Beamer will be a late omission from Sunday's team v Richmond due to an unknown ailment.

In view of what transpired last year the Bailey line sounds reasonable to me. We won only three games out of 22 and had a %age of about 60, we won the least number of quarters and had very few highlights in a shocking season. Of course we need to be competitve much longer. Just think of how much effort we need to put in to lift our wins to 6 for the season and our %age up to 80. It needs a massive effort and we have to be realistic and ... be competitive for longer both as a team and as individuals.

With the global financial crisis worsening I don't believe the new clubs will come in on schedule if at all. West Sydney is years away from being a viable proposition. Would the clubs accept a bye? I think not - especially if some clubs end up with two byes in a season and others have one bye. It's messy enough as it is now. Perhaps Vlad should bite the bullet and take another look at Tasmania's proposal. At least they have a state government and a major sponsor behind them!
