So if the following coaches came to MFC and coached a flag ... Malthouse would be: 1 coach has won 5 premierships at 3 clubs (assuming Collingwood win this year) 1 of 5 coaches have coached at 4 teams Clarkson would be: 1 of 3 coaches have won 2 premierships at 2 clubs 1 of 26 coaches have coached at 2 or more teams Lyon: 1 of 24 different coaches have won 1 premiership 1 of 26 coaches have coached at 2 or more teams Eade: 1 of 24 different coaches have won 1 premiership 1 of 13 coaches have coached at 3 or more teams

It's not easy. The policy is 1 year contract for 30+yo. There's the fall-out from Junior's exit last year and subsequently Bruce. We can't afford it to get ugly. But I don't want to offer him 2 years - he looks like it might have passed him by. I'd offer him 1 with a games trigger for 2. New coach decides who is captain, no Leading Teams empowerment for our group - they haven't earned it.
-
That's good to see, it's a good opportunity over these 2 rounds to give players a taste - GC and PA will be a smaller step up from VFL. Fitzy and McDonald would be good to look at. I'm also keen on giving Tom McNamara a go - he's been playing in the Casey midfield all year and is often in the bests - he's got a big body and is definitely worth a look. I'd bring them in for Davey, Sylvia and Joel Mac. It'd mean we're going taller so might need to sub a tall during the game. Jetta unlucky.

Named for Bev?

So what!?! Trent Croad Chris Tarrant Got any more fresh airies?

I enjoyed going to the footy when John Northey was coach. We played a defensive style but I always knew we'd give a contest, there just wasn't any doubt.
-
Morton was OK, he ran hard and got to the contest, I agree he needs to hit the contest harder, but we're getting a new coach and we may see a difference. I thought his ball use was fine - he looked for an MFC option at all times. I can't believe the love for Jones - yes he was good in the 3rd and key to our revival but IMO he was woeful apart from that. That marking contest with Jake King at RFC CHF was a typical example - if it was Blease I could understand it because he's a rookie and if it was Morton he'd be crucified for it. Jones can't stick a tackle and doesn't influence the contest when it really counts - where was he in the last? - he's supposed to have elite endurance and that's when he should be taking control of the game. Morton was still running hard in the last, Blease was burnt out, again because he's a rookie, and Jones was MIA. He's as culpable as any senior player on our list.

Dean Bailey, I hope you're watching

That's pretty unequivocal - seems that Schwab and Connolly weren't the only ones with concerns. -
Good example, Murphy was 179 x 75 when drafted and is now listed at 180 x 80 - those 5kg make a big difference. This reminds me of lame-brain Walls assertion that Scully would never be elite in the midfield because of his size but earlier in the article when he listed 1st picks who are elite he (correctly) included Murphy. The only thing that worries me about Scully is his knee - he is going to rely on his pace and endurance to be elite and this may be compromised. I admit Cooney's knee has spooked me.
-
They may have a similar BMI but Gysberts is bigger in any way you measure it and the extra 7kgs make him more able to currently hold his own in the midfield. I expect Scully to play at ~82kg and those 5kg will make a big difference. I expect Gysberts may ultimately play at Joel Corey size who is 191 x 89

It wasn't a good day for Joel Mac - cannot question his commitment but he must be staring down the barrel.

A tale of two clubs - in the end it was a close result - and MFC recognise that's just not good enough and we need to make big changes. RFC do appear to be making some progress with Gale, Cameron and Hardwick. Their supporters around us thought so yesterday - so bereft of any success, it seemed like they'd summitted Everest when really beating us currently is like summitting Mt.Waverley.
-
Scully is not playing in the centre square - presumably because he needs to put on some body size before he can compete in there. That's where he's going to make his name - not on the wing. It's not possible to make a judgement on his ceiling when he's not playing in his optimum position. Yesterday we had Moloney, McKenzie and Bartram in the square, they're all goers with mature bodies so I see the logic, but there's a lack of class there. When Scully is at a stoppage it's around the ground with 44 players involved which is harder to break open - I'm looking forward to him going 4 on 4 in the square - we were smashed at the stoppages yesterday - with Scully in there we can have a completely different mix.

Sure you're seriously misinformed: See S.Thompson in the top 10 - currently #7 in possessions, you can try ranking him by other metrics - you'll get a good result: http://www.pro-stats.com.au/psw/web/player_stats_rankings?rt=LA Also http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/crow-touches-up-suns-20110820-1j3xd.html

I notice Collingwood Reserves have a bye in R22 next week and play their last game for the season THIS week. Similarly for Geelong Reserves have just 2 more games for the season. Neither side can make the VFL finals. The standalone team playing for development and not to win definitely has a big downside at this time of the year. By GF day Collingwood players not in the 22 will not have had an opportunity to play competitive football for 6 weeks.

Might see you there over the weekend - depends on available time.

If Kennett wasn't leaving I reckon we'd have a show with Clarkson. Kennett: "I'm not aware of any offer, but I would be very surprised if all of those clubs looking for new coaches would approach Alastair," Kennett said last night. "Because next year there will be only two premiership coaches remaining in the competition - John Worsfold and Alastair - with Mick Malthouse being replaced." Read more: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/the-clarkson-five-20110818-1j0b2.html#ixzz1VROkhaNT I guess that means Geelong can't win it this year (likely Qualifying final Geelong v Hawthorn) I bet Clarko loves this sort of thing. And what about Sheedy - he'll be 4x Premiership coach next year, with Williams a premiership coach doing the real coaching. Is there anyone more ignorant about football in such a position? Anyway, if nothing else, the Clarko offer telegraphs to MM our intentions.
-
some interesting business strategy on the board this week - lie to key stakeholders - make key decisions on "gut feel"
-
The process metric might be "currect premiership coach" - that means there's 3 candidates Malthouse, Clarkson and Worsfold.
-
Sounds like a man trying to convince himself not to do something he is tempted to do.
-
That's not correct. They were very close in 2009 - they lost one of the best finals I've ever seen to the Saints in the PF by 7 points, and then the Saints went very close in the GF. They lost to Geelong by 2 points in the H&A and 14 points in the QF. In 2008 and 2010 they weren't blown away in PFs losing by 24 and 29 points.
-
They wouldn't need to say anything specific, Mick "Good coffee in Melbourne, eh Tom?" should do the trick. Does Tom actually drink caffeine - would be worth finding out in advance. Just to be safe they could use this one:
-
at least you've got a consistent absence of principles.
-
It's an interesting scenario because if MM did agree to join us he'd want to retain Scully, on the other hand he'd be paranoid about it leaking. If Scully was told it would have to be with MMs OK obviously - maybe they'd have a meeting - they could borrow Control's Cone of Silence.
-
There's a big difference between sell the dream and sell the lie. That's the whole point of my original post - MFC must believe that it is still possible to sign Scully.
