  1. What's this "tender process" and where has that come from? I can't find a reference to it and would be pleased to see one - I have heard about it on the grapevine but that's all. It's not clear that the GWS zone incentive trading is at the END of the trade period from that info - it could be an integral part of it and that would make sense. The u17 mini draft picks are just other tradable commodities. That the actual picks are a week later is OK, gives time for the dust to settle, the bid winners to work out exactly who they'll take and the AFL to have another media event in October to squash racing, cricket, soccer and any other competotor off the back page of the Sun.
  2. Obviously GWS have the choice!!!! I'm asking how the bidding works. From the other thread: Monday October 10 - Monday October 17 (2pm) - AFL exchange period, including GWS zone incentive trading rules Thursday October 13 (2pm) - GWS nomination deadline of uncontracted players. Monday October 17 (2.10pm) - GWS zone incentive selections.
  3. Here's a link to the mini draft process: http://www.afl.com.au/tabid/208/default.aspx?newsid=117004 It's not clear to me how the "bidding" for the picks works - is it by negotiation in the trade period just like other trades or is there some sort of "tender" process where clubs make a sealed bid (I've heard this but unconfirmed). The former would appear far better, the latter may not achieve the highest price. The article talks of a "bidding war" so it seems like it will be an an open auction at least. Definitive links would be appreciated.
  4. Agree - no-one here would have the faintest idea about the relative merits of the assistants on offer. If we go for an inexperienced coach it would be essential to get an experienced mentor from outside the club on board to help a la Mark Thompson at Essendon. There seems to be some competition for Craig, he was linked with Richmond and Brisbane in yesterday's paper and I can't see anything that makes us more attractive than either of those options. Where does it leave Chris Connolly? Do we need/can we afford Director of Coaching and Football Manager? Collingwood seems to think they do but MM seems unhappy with the definition of his role there - I'd be keen to read the respective JDs. I was on the get Ross Lyon bangwagon and I've been on the MM bandwagon too. But it's just madness to speculate - I can see that an assistant with experienced help could be just as good. As pointed out elsewhere the majority of recent premierships have been won by first time coaches - Thompson, Clarkson, Williams, Worsfold, Roos v Malthouse, Matthews. I'm off all bandwagons and am trusting our panel to make the right decision - oh my gawd!!!!
  5. 2008 Bailey - Essendon, 1998 Daniher - Essendon, 1993 Balme - Richmond, 1986 Northey - Richmond, we haven't had a coach from "within the fabric" since Barassi left at the end of 1985 - that's 4 coaches over 26 seasons. Why do you persist with the bullsh1t "class warfare".
  6. Didn't look like that last Saturday night.
  7. Ninth Melbourne?
  8. Don't think it matters either way. If he wins this year he'll be on 4 flags with coaching greats Reynolds, Parkin, Matthews, Barassi, Hafey, Sheedy, Jeans - he'd love to go one ahead of that bunch. Only McHale (7), Smith (6), Hughes (5) and Worrall (5) ahead of him.
  9. Denis
  10. If MFC are offering him $5M x 5 years it would be a good time to negotiate with the Saints. I believe his position would be less strong when we've hired a coach that's not him.
  11. Sure GWS get a great deal - that's the way the AFL structured the rules. But we get O'Meara for Scully - that's far more important than worrying about GWS.
  12. Now that would start to hurt. Bob is on record suggesting the 2 compo picks + pick 12, that's where I start to get a bit dizzy.
  13. You're competing against 2011 pick 4 for a start off. I don't think GWS is going to be interested in 2011 pick 12 but pick 4 is a different story. If you were GWS - pick 4 or mid first round compo pick + Petterd - what would you take? It's pick 4 all the way for me, the pointy end of the draft is where you need to be. IMHO it's very important to get an elite mid onto our list. Add in Viney and we're looking good. PS. I'd be willing to trade pick 12 this year for an experienced mid with leadership qualities if we could find one. I've mentioned Scott Thompson previously as an example - the fact that he won Adelaide's B&F wouldn't help us - if anyone's got any other suggestions I'd be pleased to hear them. The notion of getting Scott Pendlebury next year is laughable - he'll be at Collingwood or maybe GWS - any other idea is channelling hangon007.
  14. We need midfield stars - I'm with GOAG and E25 - trade with GWS for 1st pick in the U17 draft. Gold Coast are apparently offering GWS their pick 4 this year. 1 mid first rounder and Bate is not going to beat that. We need to offer both picks to GWS and throw in Bate and Warnock to get the deal done. GWS would like the 5 year window with the picks. That's going to be hard to beat. Scully for O'Meara full stop.
  15. He might simply think it's the end of an era and time to move on, no need for direction disagreement - his direction is outta there.
  16. That's complete and utter bullsh1t - they fought it out to the bitter end in both matches. Against Geelong it was Scarlett's brilliant toe poke and against Collingwood it was a cruel bounce in front of Milne that prevented them from winning. In the dying minutes of Collingwood draw Riewoldt took an inspirational pack mark 4 deep on the HBF that he had no right to make and kicked into the corridor to set up a scoring opportunity. Lenny Hayes kicked a longer goal than he ever has on tired legs. They fought it out fantastically.
  17. I disagree, all that has to happen is for Lyon to go to the board and tell them he wants to coach MFC - they're not going to force him to see out the last year of his contract - they don't want a coach who doesn't want to be there.
  18. What do you think the cut off should have been?
  19. .. and just as Jennifer Hawkins was getting down to business, Megan Gale burst in the door and said "is there room for me too?" I don't see a conflict there. the AFL can have both. For example if we traded our Scully compo to GWS for the Jaeger O'Maera pick - we'd end up with like for like (albeit minus some development) and GWS would have Scully and the Scully compo.
  20. Stop making sense - you know it's time for teeth gnashing, hair tearing and weeping.

  22. With all due respect to you and f'all to Sheedy - he wouldn't have a clue, it's got nothing to do with him or GWS. Until we trade them back for pick 1 in the U17 draft that is.
  23. They didn't pay much except for Lovett and that was a big risk that could have paid off big - Lovett in the first GF last year = Saints win. Lovett - trade pick 16 Schneider and Dempster - trade pick 26 Michael Gardiner and Birss - trade pick 43 Peake - trade pick 48 Gamble - pick 90 King and Charlie Gardiner - trade pick 90 Polo - pick 103 Dawson - Rookie pick 13 The Luke Ball deal was a fiasco though.
  24. Looks like Richmond weren't the big danger after all. ;-) Not that it makes any practical difference - but I still believe he postponed his decision until the end of the season for the reasons I've already posted. Heading up to Sydney with his family was a very strong indicator of his intentions but he didn't want to make an announcement at the airport - GWS want to have their press conference. "Lying" there doesn't indicate a trend to me. I'm very unhappy that he's gone and would have much preferred that he stay - I was very excited when we drafted him. It was always likely that he'd go - if it's $6M over 6 years vs say $3M over 5 years what do you expect? MFC hasn't been in a pristine state this year so clearly that hasn't helped our case either, but it's about the money mainly I reckon. I don't blame him for going and I don't see how he could have handled it any other way. But as a parochial MFC supporter I'll love to hate him in future. Hopefully we can get some reasonable compensation and somehow convert that into a star. We've avoided some salary inflation and they can't take anyone else off us.
  25. Surely got Pelchen's hands all over it.
