Geelong traded one of the Ablett compensation picks to Gold Coast for pick 15. It's bad grammar but that means they can be traded but the can't be used until 2012.

Agree, I remember going to R1 2007 vs the Saints with high hopes after defeating them in the finals in 2006 - this was Ross Lyon's first game as coach. We were on top early but then something changed and we were strangulated by a superior system and hope drained away. Bring it on!

Yes I agree, they may have some interest. They took Cheney.

I think it's a very good idea in theory - to keep it simple, get an agreement from GWS to give us pick 1 in the U17 draft for whatever compensation we get for Scully. The problem is in implementation - Scully is not going to do that off his own bat - he's not privy or qualified on MFC list management to concoct a deal. We'd have to ask him to do this deal for us and I think all our interaction with him is going to be focussed on him accepting our offer. I think it weakens our position if we say "but if you do decide to go ..." and I can't see that conversation happening. If he does decide to go to GWS he'll tell them before he tells us I reckon so the horse will have bolted.

We probably all do - well all except Tom.

I'm worried you're not joking.

Malthouse was on The Game Plan last night. The question was which teams outside the 8 this year will challenge for the 8 next year - he said Richmond and depending on who is coach, Melbourne and smiled and winked. Doesn't mean anything but it was very mischievious.

Apparently it's a conspiracy that everyone is in on and lying about that only idiots like me can't see.

Oh FFS - how many years have you served on the board?

Apollo Moon Tracks It was all a staged set-up. These photos are faked too.

Should have been 14 years but I guess the AFL set a precedent with Heath Shaw and I imagine if it was years as it should be then Wallis could sue the AFL for loss of livelihood or similar.

Scully is younger than Ward and Palmer, will get paid more and went earlier in the draft. He is quite clearly worth more compensation than them. But it's difficult to argue he's worth more than Ablett - a proven champion with at least 5 years left. We wont get more than the Ablett compensation, we should aim for the Ablett compensation, it's probably not enough but say we could trade it to GWS for pick 1 in the U17 draft then we'd have lost 3 years of player development. It's not ideal but I can live with that.

Here's a generally reliable source Jake Niall saying he's re-signed with Collingwood for 3 years: http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/buckley-regime-taking-shape-20110630-1gt29.html -
Hello!

I asked my goldfish too ...

GWS can't draft these U17 players this year or the corresponding group next year so the only way GWS can turn them into value is by trading the picks in the mini draft. If Scully leaves the compo picks are good for 5 years - that would appeal to GWS much more than picks that have to be taken in 2011. I'd had over all the Scully compensation for one of the early picks in the U17 mini draft - it's the most likley way we will find a star replacement. I'd add to it if necessary. If we get 2 x 5 year 1st rounders for Scully that will take a lot of beating with an established player.

I read an article that said Malthouse has assured Ratten he's not taking his job. I'll be supporting Carlton on the weekend though, we don't need them in the market for a new coach.

They probably have a different name for it in Adelaide.

I said "believe" - it's a bit like a belief in a god.

Haven't posted in this issue of the thread but just want to say so there's no doubt - I believe Tom.

Matthew Warnock's trade value mostly depends on whether 2 or more clubs want him. David Hale (who mostly played VFL in 2010 like Warnock has in 2011) was traded last year for an end of 1st round 5 yr compo pick (the Campbell Brown pick?) because both HFC and MFC were chasing him. In addition Hale was in contract so that increases his price because he can't threaten to nominate for the draft. If 2 clubs want Warnock then there can be an auction. But because Warnock is OOC, if he prefers to go to the lower finishing club he can nominate for the draft with a contract price and there's a reasonable chance (but no guarantee) he'll get to that club - that decreases his price.

F/S comes before trade so we can't do what you're saying - we have to use our next available pick after the best pick bid for him. -
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 2011 Season Wrap Edition
old55 replied to Striker475's topic in Melbourne Demons
It's premature to call 2011 because it was never only about on field results: - the coaching appointment - the associated FD appointments - the Scully decision - the trade and draft - the financial outcome - the sponsorship outcome They need to all play out before I can consider 2011 results. For example if we have Malthouse or Lyon coaching us and they attract high quality FD, Scully stays or we convert the compensation well, we trade vigorously to fill holes, we register a profit in a year when we had a non-commercial fixture and disappointing on-field results and we continue to increase our sponsorship - then 2011 will have plenty of good from my point of view. Richnmond fans think they've had a great season, North fans belt on about their great culture, I think we know where we're at and where we need to get to.
