  1. I think I just had a bit of vomit in my mouth reading that article. I'm horrified it's to the extent it is. This quote from Tripp was an eye opener - “If we took that tool away from the AFL, we’d be back in the draconian days of illegal and offshore wagering,” Tripp said. “This would compromise the player behaviour and the integrity of the game more broadly, there’s no doubt about that.” Instead we have umpires getting charged with dodgy betting behaviour......
  2. I will be seriously spitting chips if this becomes a serious option. Brisbane have already said they don't care where it's played, and they said they would be happy with IKON or Marvel. The AFL want to [censored] around with an unfinished ground then I know they're just stuffing around with this competition, the ground hasn't even got goal posts, let alone food outlets, etc. It's barely finished, FFS. https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/aflw/aflw-grand-final-2022-latest-news-on-where-the-big-game-will-be-played/news-story/429866232951c636c02f5b8bd46eb07e
  3. Exactly right. There are some sports that rely on gambling for it to be relevant - horse racing for example. And its why I don't support that sport. Football is different, when I was a kid gambling was barely on the agenda when it came to VFL footy. Now as a teacher I find it terrifying that kids are talking about betting odds as a factor if a club is favourite or not to win. That is definitely social engineering, it should not be part of the venacular of footy. I'm a big supporter of the "enjoy the game, not the odds" campaign, and I'm pleased a lot of the clubs, including Melbourne, have done away with revenue from gambling and pokies.
  4. I absolutely agree with you on this, Ollie. I've never had the perception of Fritta ever being selfish, and I do think the media criticism of him hurt his confidence in that respect. It's a big reason why players need to listen less to the media and more to their coaches. He has not been the issue. I do think a bigger aspect this year has been the absence of TMac, and the leadership he provided - the forward line missed that once he was injured. We need him fit and raring to go next year.
  5. Big reason why, even though I'm a proud Demon Army member, I'm keeping my Redlegs alive. It has always had the GFG if Melbourne are participating.
  6. Don't forget the Gawnlow and Paxlow voted by Demon Army members!!
  7. Fair point. I guess the next question is what percentage of the advertising revenue is from gambling companies, and can they be subsidised/replaced by more appropriate advertisers?
  8. Terribly sad. She was a defence force member, apparently she died by suicide in her barracks. Devastating for her family and also the Crows.
  9. Is it the AFL or the TV networks that receiving the revenue from gambling sponsorships? Because if it's the TV networks, it shouldn't really affect AFL player payments. Certainly the amount of gambling ads seem to be at odds with a lot of clubs' focus on the "love the game, not the odds" campaign.
  10. Is the link faulty? It won't open for me EDIT: never mind, I've figured it out, it's a Twitter link, I'm at work, Twitter is blocked here
  11. Just spoke to the club. They told me my pack will be sent in the next two weeks. I expressed how upsetting it is that: - despite the fact I renewed in late September, I was not in the first batch to get my pack - last season, despite the fact I renewed both my AFL and AFLW memberships in October last year I didn't get my pack until March this year, and by the time I got it, they'd run out of the membership items for the AFLW and the season was just about over anyway. - because I renewed my AFLW membership in October, I paid $99, even though by January the price was reduced to $60, and so I paid more and got less (I didn't even get stickers) - when season 7 AFLW memberships were announced I paid $60 for my membership, but was then told 2 weeks later season 6 memberships would be automatically rolled over. - Season 7 memberships were meant to come with stickers. Guess what? I got no bloody stickers. Guess what else? They've run out. So I paid $159 for two seasons of AFLW memberships, even though it was mean to be only $60, and I got nothing to show for it. This is despite being a foundation AFLW member and season 8 silver player sponsor. I'm a 38 year member of the club, 35 year member of Redlegs, I'm a member of the Demon Army, and Ruby Demons. Each year I pay close to $1000 for AFL and AFLW memberships for myself and my two nephews. I'm either the unluckiest member of the club, or the club genuinely hates me..... Needless to say I have no confidence my pack is even going to come.
  12. It'll be my fifth outing there this year. First time was Bulldogs v GWS game for Round 1 of Season 7 (a past student was debuting for Bulldogs), second game was the VFL GF, third game was Melbourne v Carlton, fourth was the Qualifying Final against Adelaide.
  13. Yeh, that's why I refuse to give up my Redlegs membership, because like Tridents, there's a waiting list. I've been a Redlegs member since 1988 when I was 17. Even with around 8 years living in the country I kept my Redlegs alive.
  14. My surname starts with O. People after the alphabet are getting theirs before me.
  15. I'm disappointed that every year I renew early, and yet every year I'm amongst one of the last to get my pack. Last season I renewed in October, didn't get my pack until March, and by the time I got it (mine was one of the 7000 or so that got lost by the distributor) they ran out of the AFLW merch packs so I missed out. Sadly this year looks like potentially a repeat. No emails, nothing. I renewed late September as soon as I got the email to renew....sadly nothing yet. 38 years consecutive membership.....
  16. I like your thinking!!! In all seriousness, though, I can't think of a worse idea than Cairns or Townsville. No fans from either team would be able to go.
  17. Jeez I hope to hell Adelaide thrash the pants off Brisbane this weekend!!
  18. Conversely, a man bun is just a ponytail that hasn't been pulled through the hairtie all the way.
  19. I couldn't agree more. They're carrying on like Brisbane are the only club in contention for the cup.
  20. The first time they played us, they beat us by less than a goal. Since then it's been all us.
  21. After 7 seasons there's only so far that explanation can stretch, in fact in Melbourne's case event longer, given we started doing exhibition matches in 2013. Melbourne are one of the two pioneer clubs of AFLW. The club has an attitude of one club. It's about time the supporters had that, too.
  22. Confidence is a wonderful thing. That goal from running around her mark last week is testament to that. It's so great to see!!
  23. The exciting thing about Bannas is that she's only 20 years old. She's only going to get better and better and better.
  24. So you're making assumptions about women's football based on watching other teams? An elimination final no less? This is Geelong's first finals (in the past they've been pretty ordinary) and North, whilst at times been a good team, finished 8th. Some argue they're making up numbers in the finals this year. Neither North or Geelong play like Melbourne play, Dees play for possession rather than bombing it forward, and their communication has been outstanding. In fact the Dees men can learn a lot from the Dees women in that respect. I suggest you watch Melbourne v Adelaide Qualifying Final. I'd say it was one of the best games they've played.
  25. You didn't see the comment Layzie was replying to, did you, Redleg? He was referring to Kenny the Swans fan.
