The unfortunate reality is this will overshadow everything else. The media will make sure of that. And it will add to an already high pressure environment that is finals.

PRESEASON TRAINING: Monday 27th November, 2023
Gawndy the Great replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
No bandaged knee. It’s a good sign for pre season at least. It would be fantastic if it held up through the season.- 266 replies

I think so too and I must say, I like these dirty tactics. I feel like WCE deserve it too, i mean who turns down 6,11,F1.. its a ridiculously good offer.

pick 6 - Curtin pick 11 - Windsor

At 2 min mark, “Curtin to Van Rooyen”… its a sign !

Collingwood another gifted run. 2 additional home games in Melbourne compared to us. We are the only team to play all top 4 teams twice, which should be reserved for the grand finalists.

Based on profile pic, I assume you are referring to @Ethan Tremblay

Some of the draft reviews use the "Similar to / Plays like" comparison, which i appreciate as we don't get to see a lot of how they play. Now this is only a style comparison and makes no secret that it doesnt equate to actual quality / effectiveness as they have yet to be proven. Which gets me to the plays comparison of the players we have been linked to and will likely be available around our picks. If we can assume that they will be in the ball park to the players they are compared against, how would this shape your pick preferences for 6 and 11? Daniel Curtin plays like Steven May Connor O'Sullivan plays like Sam Taylor Ryley Sanders plays like Andrew Brayshaw Koltyn Tholstrup plays like Camron Rayner Darcy Wilson plays like Sam Walsh Caleb Windsor plays like Nick Martin and finally my favourite: Kynan Brown plays like Errol Gulden (because we get him on the cheap) For me: Curtin; Wilson

I think we will take him at 11 if he is there. The key theme coming through is his link play and ability to hit targets in the F50. He also has strength & contest, which our club values highly. RE: Wilson, not much details on ball use and decision making. Clearly has the hallmarks of a great athlete, but we need that and skill.

@Andy can we remove the Culture / Oliver disclaimers within threads? I’m getting RSI in my thumb from the extra scrolling on every page.

What a bad draft year 2020 was. I dont think Bowey is top 10 material but looking at his competition, nothing screams out. Im not sold on JUH just yet - i get he is still developing, but he is starting to take a Max King trajectory in that we expected greatness, just wasnt able to deliver. Errol Gulden for me will end up being #1 from 2020 draft. The kid is an absolute workhorse that is going to win a brownlow.

Just got a feeling he is going to turn out like his older brother. Nothing but a hunch.

Do you think Lamb has such a reputation amongst his peers that the leaking of interests will actually turn things on their heads and make other teams rethink their strategy?
-
I like the profile of this kid. Curtin and Tholstrup / Windsor / Leake would be a great haul. Our WA contingent would be boosted with another possible 2 additions. Im not overly excited about Sanders and would take Curtin ahead of both were available at our pick.

Max Promises Tough Love this Preseason
Gawndy the Great replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Very true ET. You could replace the supporters with footy public in general inc media. -
His stoppage work is a cross between Neale and Trac and disposal akin to Oliver. Smart footballer. I think he'll be a great player and given his style will quickly rise in the AFL ranks and hopefully displace all the talk around N.Daicos sooner rather than later.

It was interesting reading that most of the draft prospects' fandom of their childhood clubs had started to wean. I wonder if those statements are intentional now that they could be drafted by another club, or whether it is genuine.
-
There is absolutely - without a shadow of a doubt - an opportunity to really use recent events, the Maynard incident, double straight sets and arguably a few other things to galvanize the group this pre-season. Drive them hard. Goody will need to be careful in how he chooses to use the 'theme' as it can grow tired really quickly - maybe save the good stuff for finals, but the theme has to be prominent throughout the year and really build a story around it. End of the day, clubs look for an edge. We were 7 and 2 points away from a PF. That is nothing - so every penny counts.

It's one thing to talk about it, but to have a player come out and acknowledge there is substance to it is a total other level. I don't know if anyone in AFL circles i.e. former past players have ever come out and said it though? We could all see a number of Pies / Blues games during finals this year umpired differently and the media largely attribute it to the incompetence of umpires. It would take a disgruntled umpire to come out years after retirement to suggest there were larger forces at play. The offield stuff i.e. Cripps, Maynard etc is a lot easier to influence and agree there is likely to be sort of manipulation from the headhonchos.
-
Brodie seems like a decent fellow for holding back on what i suspect has a bit more substance to it given what the club is going through atm. So have plenty of respect for that. I still think in time, the truth on what happened - in particular around SF game - will make its way into the public domain.
-
He will be a star. The only thing stopping him is the mental side of things. Definitely can see the kid winning a Brownlow.

6,8,42 just means 11,F1 goto Geelong to get 8. Could be a 3 way deal perhaps? Given how difficult Geelong were in trade week, I doubt they'd get involved for that deal. But they will need picks in 24 to try and bring Darcy down from Freo. Our F1 might just be enough carrot there.
-
Norf would not give them 2 and their only F1 in '24. They are likely bottom 4 again and will not get another hand out. They have traded away their afl compo picks as well. I just cannot see Norf coughing up two top 4 picks for #1 - it would be insane.
-
I cant see North offering 2&3. I just dont think anybody would be that silly albeit #3 was a freebie. However, that is the only trade that will trump our offer of 6,11,42,F1 and i just cannot see it happening. Norf can try to package up their later picks (combo of 15,17,18) to try to move a little higher up the order. Maybe they throw all 3 for Cats Pick 8? Whatever they potentially get could be combined with #2 and a F1 (AFL compensation) and it would be comparable to ours, but that is unlikely. So like it or not, ours will be the best offer put to WC. I just hope that they don't accept it.
-
That is silly on both fronts. 1. Melbourne for putting up a stupid over-the-top bid for one player and, 2.WC for rejected an over-the-top bid for Pick 1. 6,11,42,F1 for Pick 1 is incredibly generous. They are delusional if they think Norf is going to hand over Pick 2,3. They are likely in a position where they have settled on Reid and it will take considerable overs for them to budge.
