Welcome to Demonland: Jake Lever
Vogon Poetry replied to stevethemanjordan's topic in Melbourne Demons
So Pennant are you saying that if we win a flag Prendergast will indeed be the architect of our success because without him we wouldn't have accumulated the talent we now have? That will conflict poor old Red! And on another note, those with supposed inside information on Lever beware if you are wrong. I will personally hunt you down and punish you appropriately for your sins (calling BBO). Alternatively if you are right you are welcome to drop by Chateau Vogon and collect an appropriate bottle of red for your troubles. Vogon red, unlike our poetry, is quite good. Note: This offer is now closed to any "Jonny come latelies" -
I love Col but I think there is a bit of sense in this. If he was told that he wouldn't play seniors and he was taking a spot on the list we'd like to fill I'm sure he'd agree to being paid out, play at Casey and continue his coaching role with the club. He's a terrific club man. I hope we treat him very well.

I don't know if you realise how silly this comment is but we'll leave it there. You're like Sheldon in this clip except for you it's Oscar.
-
You're not. How could you be?
-
You never miss a chance do you. For all you're in denial Oscar has played some very good footy for us. He's not Lever, we get that, but he's got a lot of excellent attributes.
-
I'd trade him for something we need. If he was in some way packaged in the Lever or Gaff scenario I'd do it in a heartbeat because we'd be better off. I'd not trade him for simply (say) "pick 25" and take that pick to the draft. For all Watts has his weaknesses and frustrates he also has his strengths, and they are significant. You may get something with a pick or you may not. It would most likely take years to mature. I don't believe we are at the stage of trading out our experienced and good players (which Watts is) to develop talent down the line. At some stage you move beyond development and have a go. As Goodwin says, we are now out of our bubble and there is expectation around the Club. Trading Watts for something that may be good in 4 years doesn't do it for me. If Watts does go there will be a part of me that is very disappointed.
-
Trade for something we need, a player. Don't trade for a pick. Can't vote until that option is there. It's a silly question because you need to know what you're getting.
-
I think the misconception is that people think we need to draft stars. I don't think we do. We need three more players who are just "starting 22" each week. Gaff and Lever would obviously be 2 and we could probably get a third somewhere. Actually, Lever and Gaff would be much higher up than we probably need but if they wanted to come to us happy days. We've got the top end talent coming. We need to push out the type of players like Harmes, Bugg, Hannan, ANB, Stretch. We need to force those players to become consistent contributors, and some will. We can then just draft talent and develop it properly. Gaff, Lever and one other and we will be serious contenders for 5 to 8 years.

I've got no idea because I don't know what WCE want. I'd have no hesitation trading this or next years first round pick. Picks are so overrated. There's no guarantee that you get a gun anywhere in the draft let alone above pick 10 which hopefully we'd have next year. Gaff is worth a lot to us because he's what we need and he's very good. Lever and Gaff and we are a genuine chance next year. Don't tell me that's not worth a fair bit. And he's got at least 5 years you'd think. If Gaff wants to come we'll do a deal regardless of what the Lever situation is.

We are getting picky at Demonland. Andrew Gaff not good enough for us? Wow. Perfect age, provides what we desperately need, averages 29 possessions a game this year for WCE, lovely kick, runs all day, good decision maker and durable. Nah, who needs that? I love him at the Demons, would be one of our best 10 players.

I know the Doctor you're talking about, he's a good friend. He'd be mortified if he knew that what he was saying to you was being plastered all over Demonland.

We should have been close to the 4. Look, you've got your perspective and I've got mine and I'll express my view if I want to. It's called freedom of speech. The more interesting issues for me are whether he really does offer leadership and does he have a future, but you keep punching on the suspension. What was your view when it happened?
-
You are welcome to look at that game, I'm looking at the season.
-
I'm moaning about not making finals and looking for explanations. If you don't like my posts put me on ignore and your problem is solved.

Watts for a lot of reasons. Oliver's goal was a brilliant/fortunate snap that went through. McDonald's was important in the context of the game but just reflex. Hunt's was a wonderful long kick, special, but just one kick. Watt's was different. He ran 100m to receive. He ran 50m with the ball. He had the awareness to judge his position in relation to his opponents. He steadied and kicked a very good goal from a tight angle when he must have been exhausted. He had time to worry and choke but didn't. Oliver and McDonald's were reflex. Hunt's just one kick. Watts had to do so much right and he did it when the pressure was at its maximum. Clearly the best for me.

That is exactly right and why I've called people out who have lauded him for his "on field coaching", his leadership and some have even said he's been a great benefit off field as well. How would they know? We can only judge what we see. I've seen a stupid 3 week suspension, I've seen dumb 50 metre penalties (one against WCE that nearly cost the game and another against Adelaide in Darwin which cost a goal and so close to a spot in the 8 with that act alone). I strongly criticised Lewis (and Hogan) for being reported for off the ball incidents against Carlton and was roundly criticised. Deiter even asked me what planet I lived on and I replied with IMO Lewis let the entire Club down - teammates, support staff, supporters. As for his playing ability I think he's good when he's around the ball but terrible off it. He continually gets beaten on the spread which gives teams a plus one in many situations. He doesn't tackle much and he's now hurried with the ball because he doesn't have the agility to find time to dispose effectively. His kicking is losing effectiveness, when the heat was on in the first quarter against Collingwood he couldn't hit targets when under little or no pressure. And he is starting to fumble and go to ground. For all these issues, which I think are speed and age related, unquestionably warranted a spot in the best 22. It will be interesting to see how the FD balance all these things next year.

Hibbert - ineffective ball use Lewis - liability on spread MFC - lacks creative players
-
Yeh, cos they didn't try. Dope.
-
I thought Brayshaw was on each of our best to three quarter time. Interesting how people see things differently.

Many thanks KC

Really? I'd be really upset if he wasn't upset.

MATCH PREVIEW AND TEAM SELECTION - ROUND 23

Just watched Goody's presser. I've never known a coach to say nothing so often. Not that I care. -

I agree with that but the way it appears is we can get Lever but we can't get Kelly. You take what you can get. I don't think it necessarily means the FD have prioritized a KPD. -
I was a regular at Sandy and Casey until a few years ago as I enjoyed watching our youth develop. In the last few years I've not attended as many matches limiting myself to about 4 live this year and I think 2 or 3 on TV. For those that are regular watches I'd be interested in your comments on the standard of play. My view is the standard of footy at VFL level played by Casey, whilst effective, is awful. I get surprised where I see a good chain of possessions, it's stop start stuff rolling maul school yard footy. Too many players round the ball of too little skill to execute to a level that allows anything like AFL attributes to be displayed. The standard when I watched us at Sandy and even in the earlier days with Casey was much better and enjoyable. The game at Port was so bad and boring I left 10 minutes into the second quarter. I just couldn't be bothered watching the rubbish being served up. The game against top of the league Willy was a marginal at best. Scrappy and dull. Am I the only one who thinks this? And why is it? Game plan? The Casey ground. The personnel? My major interest was always to see the new players. It's a hard ask to get motivated to go and watch Casey IMO even with a few new faces to see. And the Casey ground is just awful for viewing.

Jnr settle. I was referring to both stats. There is another one that said " 1. teams score 53% of the time they enter our fwd 50 - last in the AFL ". Does that help?
