People think the odd free kick missed or paid doesn't have an impact. Dogs get that holding the ball and kick ahead... instead down the other end and momentum changes entirely.

Big clubs playing in finals = $$$ for channel 7 and in turn the afl one of the sydney clubs in finals = ratings bonanza in sydney = $$ for 7 and thus AFL its not a long bow to draw

I looked it up. Port were 3rd in round 13 of 1997. They finished 9th.

The solution is, unfortunately, just about a complete re writing of the rules. The game is impossible to umpire.
