In 1998, Melb. lost to Geelong by 95 points in round 12(15 goals to 1 at halftime), then the next week lost to St Kilda by 85 pts in driving rain. We Demon supporters felt similar despair to that we felt after massive losses to Fitzroy in '79, and, later, 186 at Geelong. BUT.....in 1998, not only did we make the finals, but we beat the eventual premiers(Adelaide) by 8 goals in the Qual Final. If we hadn't played the Friday night specialists, North in a gale in the Prelim., we'd have had a really good chance of winning the flag!!!...after abysmal, abject depression after round13!!! I'm hoping we'll later look back on the Hawthorn game as an aberration. -
My 3 word player analysis V Hawthorn

Not a good summary -
I think a guy by the name of Daniel Horne is on Pure Footy, and sometimes Glen Luff. These two blokes have encyclopaedic knowledge of stats, and,it seems to me, incredible understanding of football trends and tactics. "Horney" is very ( appropriately) bullish about the Demons.
-
Superficially it would seem that the idea of the "intentional free" ("professional foul") would not work, because the umpires should pay" the advantage". However, several times in every match, the umps fail to pay the advantage, so the tactic of deliberately infringing is occasionally effective. Players might as well try it....there's nothing to lose.
-
Garry Hardeman could roost torps with either foot on the run.
-
Fair umpiring would help. They've had an armchair ride in all their close victories against us. Especially in Hobart 2016 , when Goldstein was given mysterious frees against Max, and ended with 4 undeserved goals.
-
You Krauts certainly know about torpedoes!
-
I think the penny might have dropped with AFL coaches. Tuohy let go with a few torps yesterday from fullback, when Geel were within a goal and no time left. Bernie's tried a couple for us, but hasn't made good connection. Hunt had a try from 75 m after the final siren v Geelong. I think I remember a few other torps from other teams this season. The players should practise torps till they become more proficient, with a low rate of poor contact. There is absolutely NO downside to trying a torp from outside 60m after a siren. I admit that a slewed torp from a kick in could yield an easy goal, but players should be so skilled at this type of kick that miskick is a rarity.

This is the longest sentence since Nelson Mandela's!

Uh oh....they'll probably sack the coach after the Hawks game, and we all know what often happens in a new coach's first game!

It is called "incorrect disposal" if you drop it when tackled, but the free kick is still for dropping the ball. It's just semantics. -
Drop OMac after he murdered Hawkins??!! Duh!

I thought Wagner’s third quarter was significant in our comeback. -

Was the timekeeping right? Last quarter 27 min !!?? I thought there ‘d be at least 2 min to go after Max( I assumed) put us in front. -
I agree the BOM is very unreliable, but my point is that the mere fact that they predict rain deters many supporters.(not you and me!) I agree that it's regrettable that fair weather supporters exist, but it's a fact.

Opposition Watch: Rd 1 vs Geelong

We should have pretended Jack Viney was playing! -
So I guess you have to be able to attract a crowd in any conditions....rain, hail or snow. I think the crowd would be affected by bad weather even on GF day. At least 20% of supporters are "fair weather supporters", especially MCC Members, which is a cross we have to bear.
-
Yes, Watts used to make it rain, too.
-
Despite months of dry weather up to now, the BOM has predicted rain for next Sunday. This is a financial body blow to the MFC , because the crowd will be reduced by up to 20%,just because of the prediction. I hope the prediction will change as the week goes on, but if ,on Saturday, they say it'll rain on the day of the match, it will have a definite effect. I have noticed in recent years, MFC have often been unlucky with the weather predictions when we have our ( rare) big attendance home games, especially Queens Birthday. Also I think slippery conditions favour the more experienced sides, i.e. Geelong. But if the BOM keeps up its usual form,,they'll predict rain, but the game will be played in sunshine.

What about Jordie McKenzie's role in that great team goal.!! (not bad for a much-maligned Demonland "list-clogger".) By the way....can anyone remind me of a time where we won with a kick after the siren? I can think of at least two where we lost,(87 prelim, and Clarkson's first game for North),but I can't remember us doing it. Another one close to the siren was Leoncelli in Adelaide.

I was worried at the time that Neville could be in trouble. It's not clear on the video what his hand was doing near Hardwicke's face. Also it's not clear why Jetta blew his top like that, when he was the tackler in the first place. I wonder if Hardwicke kicked him, or bit him, or squirrelled him, and that's why he did his block( like Oliver when he was bitten at Casey that time). If it had been Carlton, they would have said he had double vision, and scratch marks. Either Hawthorn have higher principles, or they were hiding something Hardwicke did(or said).

Anyone else feeling sick in the guts
Jumping Jack Clennett replied to doc roet's topic in Melbourne Demons
Everyone keeps telling me what a great list we have, and that we should push for the top 4, but I find it so hard to feel genuinely optimistic. I guess it's because of the persistent heartbreak we've suffered over the last 53 years. One thing I am optimistic about, is that once we have some good seasons,it will start a positive feedback, of more supporters, more members, less home game sales, more Friday night games, and a better deal from the umpires, due to more Demon crowd pressure. A lot depends on injuries, and emergence of some players to elite level. -

My mate had an old FJ Holden. When you turned on the radio you had to wait about 15 seconds for the valves to warm up!
