  1. Despite months of dry weather up to now, the BOM has predicted rain for next Sunday. This is a financial body blow to the MFC , because the crowd will be reduced by up to 20%,just because of the prediction. I hope the prediction will change as the week goes on, but if ,on Saturday, they say it'll rain on the day of the match, it will have a definite effect. I have noticed in recent years, MFC have often been unlucky with the weather predictions when we have our ( rare) big attendance home games, especially Queens Birthday. Also I think slippery conditions favour the more experienced sides, i.e. Geelong. But if the BOM keeps up its usual form,,they'll predict rain, but the game will be played in sunshine.
  2. What about Jordie McKenzie's role in that great team goal.!! (not bad for a much-maligned Demonland "list-clogger".) By the way....can anyone remind me of a time where we won with a kick after the siren? I can think of at least two where we lost,(87 prelim, and Clarkson's first game for North),but I can't remember us doing it. Another one close to the siren was Leoncelli in Adelaide.
  3. I was worried at the time that Neville could be in trouble. It's not clear on the video what his hand was doing near Hardwicke's face. Also it's not clear why Jetta blew his top like that, when he was the tackler in the first place. I wonder if Hardwicke kicked him, or bit him, or squirrelled him, and that's why he did his block( like Oliver when he was bitten at Casey that time). If it had been Carlton, they would have said he had double vision, and scratch marks. Either Hawthorn have higher principles, or they were hiding something Hardwicke did(or said).
  4. Everyone keeps telling me what a great list we have, and that we should push for the top 4, but I find it so hard to feel genuinely optimistic. I guess it's because of the persistent heartbreak we've suffered over the last 53 years. One thing I am optimistic about, is that once we have some good seasons,it will start a positive feedback, of more supporters, more members, less home game sales, more Friday night games, and a better deal from the umpires, due to more Demon crowd pressure. A lot depends on injuries, and emergence of some players to elite level.
  5. My mate had an old FJ Holden. When you turned on the radio you had to wait about 15 seconds for the valves to warm up!
  6. Has he been seen at Post Christmas training?(I presume they're back this week)
  7. Is he 27 today? If so, he was born on the same day as Joe Root. But I think he might be 26(I hope!)
  8. There was a blatant free to us not paid immediately before the Neitz indiscretion. That was a memorably frustrating loss.
  9. They listed the criteria under the table when it was in the paper yesterday.
  10. This table did not take into account the difficulty of playing at Geelong. The unusually shaped ground with 30000 hostile supporters and virtually none of our own, means that it is rare for away teams to win there, however poor a season Geelong has. Collingwood, Essendon, usually Carlton(surprisingly they go there this year), and usually Richmond, don't face this problem. It is easily as great a factor as successive 6 day breaks, but is not taken into account in the above table. It's similar to travelling to other states, but that disadvantage is shared more equally.
  11. Et "too" Brute?...........I see your point!
  12. What a champ was the Ox. Tall, mobile, great mark, great kick.Supreme talent curtailed by injury. No wonder Collingwood offered him a fortune to change. But he remained a Demon. Still is a Demon.
  13. Any chance we're going to surprise by making a move on Andrew? I think he becomes a restricted FA next year, so now might be the time for WCE to try to get full value for him if he wants to come home. Perhaps that's why we hurried the Lever deal through, and are trying to get a decent draft pick for JW.
  14. I've always thought Mullet was a proper AFL tall forward, who couldn't get a game at Norf because they had Petrie, Brown,Tarrant ,Waite ,etc. If we could get him for nothing, he's worth it, for depth, in case Hogan gets injured as usual, or Weideman continues his over-slow development.
  15. Can someone tell me if the following two stats are correct? I think I heard Glen Luff stating these stats on "Pure Footy", but I might have misinterpreted. 1/ Jack Watts is no. 4 in the AFL for contested pressure in the forward line.(!!!) 2/Jack Watts is no. 2 in the AFL for one on one contests. Surely they can't be true, but he's usually spot on, so I think I heard it wrongly. Am I correct in my recollection, that in the first third of the season, before our injuries, Melbourne was considered the no. 1 pressure team in the AFL? Watts was part of that side.
  16. I remember an amazing win at Windy Hill, where Ricky took two contested marks in the goal square at the members' end,for two goals that ultimately were significant in our win. Contested marks were definitely not his strongpoint, but he did it that glorious day. He was as fast as lightning , and was inspiring as he dashed away from packs bouncing the ball, and was a pretty good short passer. He surely wasn't an "in-and-under "type, but I think he is an example of the fallacy of not picking players because they're "too short". Though it was in the 80's , I reckon it still is true.(Caleb Daniel, Dayne Zorko come to mind).
  17. Domestic issues at the "family club". Sacking the CEO, and a longterm board member quitting. I feel so sorry for them. One bad year on the field and the knives come out.
  18. I reckon one of our greatest problems at Melbourne is poor kicking efficiency. I think Jack Watts is the most efficient kick in our team. It seems foolhardy not to keep him. Hoges has said he licks his lips when Jack has the ball. Most unfortunately, Jack has rarely had Hoges as a target due to Jesse's frequent absences. One of the reasons Jack is so proficient at pinpointing team mates and setting up attacks is because he does not rush. This apparent lack of urgency is misinterpreted by many observers as a lack of endeavour. It appears to me Jack Watts is popular with his team mates , and a significant part of the heart and soul of Melbourne. Please keep him, list managers.
  19. Does anyone know if K Byers is related to former Demon of the 60's Gary Byers?
