  1. Don Hewson died last week, aged 98 .I think he was the oldest living Melbourne player. Can anyone confirm this? He played about a dozen games during WW2 while a medical student, before joining the army. He also played district cricket as a fast bowler for Uni. He was a GP for many years in South Melbourne. He was well until a few weeks before his death, and was still a keen Demon follower.
  2. If your tactic is to emulate what Geelong did with Danger on Saturday, leaving him "one out" in the goal square,Jesse's not your man. It needs to be someone very fast, who is good one on one.......Jeffy Garlett! He's pretty good at body work in marking duels, too, but the ball should be delivered low. It's incredible to me, that no teams ever try leaving someone one out in the goal square. Conventional wisdom is that it leaves you one short up field. It created match -losing problems for the Tassie Hawks last match.
  3. Does anyone know if Kristen Beams, the Aust women's team legspinner is Ben Beams' sister.? Ben was a talented cricketer who once made a triple century in a 50 over Club game in Hobart. Ben was a last minute replacement for Cam Bruce in the 2000 GF. I know Kristen is a Tasmanian, too. She's 33, and he's about 38.
  4. When Bolton's talking I keep looking for Ron Blaskett behind him.
  5. I'm worried about our round 23 v Collingwood. They'll be out of the finals race, but it'll be Buck's last game as coach, and the players will all lift for the occasion. How I hope I'm wrong!
  6. I was so surprised that anyone could say OMac was "abominable" in the first half, I watched the replay again( for the third time). He played pretty well in Q1, then very well for the rest oft the he game. Yes, he had two hurried kicks in Q1 that did not end up to our advantage, but overall, he defended well. For he rest of the match,he disposed of the ball excellently apart from those two kicks, which were under great pressure, and far from "abominable". Twice his creative play from the backline ended up in crucial goals. My good mate that I sit next to each week reckons he's hopeless. Anything that goes wrong he ends up blaming Omac. You might be like him, jnrmac. ( by th way, Omac is another "jnrmac".)
  7. How many "bags" has Hoges kicked? I can only remember one bag of 5, which was against the Saints at Etihad in ? 2015.
  8. I'm not suggesting they're telling deliberate lies, I'm just saying that any perceived sensation of respiratory obstruction from a professionally fitted mouth guard is purely psychological.
  9. I think the players remove the mouth guards because they know there's a TV close -up of their faces, and they want to look good. It is a fallacy to suggest that their is a superior airway with the mouth guard removed. ( unless it's grossly wrongly moulded , in which case the player would find it impossible to run,or do anything energetic.) Players should be encouraged to keep their mouth guards in at all times. It is a very poor example to young observers if they are removed all the time when taking set shots. It also wastes the limited time they have to prepare to kick. Note Robbo senior's comments above . They are an essential piece of equipment , minimising the chances of jaw fractures and concussion, to say nothing of the expensive and disfiguring effect of broken teeth.
  10. I was at the game in 2015 when we beat them, and Bernie tagged Danger. I was very impressed by the Adelaide supporters that night. As I was leaving my seat for the exit, quite a few Adelaide supporters saw the Demon scarf and said " good on ya, mate, they played well!" There was absolutely no aggro. I've been to about half a dozen Melb games in Adelaide, and have never had a problem with their fans. I hope our supporters can be good sports too!(after yelling their lungs out during the games!) I really like the entertainment there, too.
  11. We got the right Frost brother!
  12. I liked the way Bernie, when he realised the Ump was making a big deal of it, suddenly realised it might mitigate the penalty if he was hurt too. The result? A slightly delayed reaction simulating a mild head injury. Didn't work, unfortunately. I reckon the Ump did nothing to dispel the feeling that the umps are a bit spineless by the sooky way he reacted. He could have continued on.....but I'm glad he didn't.
  13. I thought Jeff Hilton was potentially a genuine star. were there issues? Paul Prympke was a really good negative CHB,dogged by injury. Andy Lamprill won one game with a great mark, but I don't think he was a star!
  14. We could have another Greg Williams or Sam Mitchell with Clarrie. I can't believe the quickness of his reflexes, and the awareness of his team mates' whereabouts. He can take a mark and kick well too, but those creative hand passes in close or at a distance are the hallmark. We've gone for years without genuine stars. We might have four by 2018. Oliver ,Hunt, Hogan and Petracca. Could Frost be up there, too?,and wouldn't it be great if Weideman develops as hoped. For decades we've had to worry about opposition stars. Soon they'll have to worry about ours. ( like '94 when we had Jako, Stinga, Lyon, Schwarta and Charles) By the way, most sides would love to have Tommy Mac back there, and I have high hopes for Oscar. It's getting very exciting.
  15. Sam and Ben Reid are grandsons of Demon fullback of the 50's, Keith Carroll. THEREFORE..... we should have them both!
  16. I think you're going a bit easy on Greene. You say a free kick and 50 m. That's wrong....Daniel already had a mark, so there was no free, just 50m. You say the ball was there to spoil. That's a joke...he walloped his face when he knew it was too late to spoil. It was a full, round arm, reckless, deliberate swipe, of high force. Far worse than anything Vince, Hogan,or Lewis did. Comparable to Grinter on Wallace, except that Grinter was running with the flight of the ball, and it wasn't late.He missed the ball by the same amount as Greene. That was in the " tough" days. He got 5 weeks.
  17. We got Ricky Barham's younger brother. He didn't achieve a lot.
  18. Surprised to see Footscray, who have enjoyed armchair rides from the umps for as long as I can remember, get robbed tonight. The 50 m against Easton Wood to give Patton a shot right in front in Q4 was blatantly unfair. Wood was watching the ump, waiting for him to shout "play on!". The ump gave Patton an eternity, then yelled " move it on !". Wood thought it was "play on," and a ridiculous, match losing goal was conceded. There was also a blatant deliberate o.o.b. by Greene towards the end, which the ump didn't pay, despite being very severe on deliberate calls all night prior to that.
  19. Toby Greene must get 4 weeks for that deliberate round arm face punch tonight v. the Bulldogs. The only reason he didn't shatter his opponents mandible was because he got him flush in the mouth, across the lips and teeth. It was in a different league to the face to face jumper punches of Lewis and Hogan, who were dealt with too harshly by the MRP. The arrogant little Cousins look -a- like has been warned, but took no heed. The fact that the victim only received a cut lip is irrelevant. It was vicious, and much more likely to cause severe injury than the misdemeanours of Vince, Hogan or Lewis.
