Can't agree with that. Goddard is a proven star. Can play FB, CHB, HB, midfield, CHF, HF or FF. And he does most, if not all of those, at a high level. He's a star, and if he is available, he is the exact kind of A-grade leader this club is crying out for.

Yes, we had a dud list. No, that does not mean that Mahoney and West get excused from our bad performances. If Bailey (rightly) copped blame, I fail to see how assistant coaches are absolved. Nasher, don't be facetious. What did you want me to do, apportion numbers detailing the proportion of blame spread around? I was merely addressing someone else's view that Mahoney had actually been a decent coach because our conversion rate once inside 50 was good. That statistic may well reveal that he did some good work, but I don't think that's enough to say Mahoney was a good coach. I think there are plenty of areas we can improve on in our forward line and some of the fact that our forward line isn't terribly good at the moment stems in part from Mahoney. To say that the lack of improvement in our forwards is solely due to their crappiness lets coaches off the hook. No doubt he was dealt a crap hand. But surely part of a coach's job is to develop players, whether they're the cream of the crop or the worst on the list. The fact that we had/have forwards on our list who haven't developed a lot cannot be solely the players' fault. No one expected players like Newton or Dunn to be the next Franklin/Johnson. But to at least see some development in our forward players over the past few years would have been nice, and the fact we haven't had that surely lies in part with Mahoney's drawbacks as a coach.

Yes. But I was also thinking about Gold Coast putting pick 4 on the table, which I think is a strong possibility. I'd imagine, if Goddard wanted out, he'd enjoy moving to the Gold Coast, playing alongside Ablett, and potentially winning a premiership in the next 3 years, as his career approaches its end. And I can't imagine St Kilda turning down pick 4.

Fair call. But surely he takes some of the blame for our forwards' inability to hold their positions/structures. And surely he takes the blame for some of our forwards' lack of development (e.g. Newton, Miller, Dunn, Bate). Of course, so does Bailey, and the midfield is also to blame. But one statistic does not validate his performance, even if it does give him something to hold his hat on.

Demons told Harry Taylor 'We are going to pick you up'
titan_uranus replied to BAMF's topic in Melbourne Demons
I reckon people are right to assume we were going to take him at 14 but Grimes was available and that changed our plans, so Geelong took him at 17 before we could get to him at 21. Isn't he a lucky bastard. -
If Goddard is available, I'd throw whatever we can spare at him. Our first pick included. He won't be, though, and even if he is, we'd be trumped by the Gold Coast I reckon.

Gold: rpfc Silver: Rogue Bronze: Hannibal (partly for entertainment) Disappointed my name hasn't popped up in this thread yet...what a let down.

If you'd told me a few weeks ago that Leigh Brown would be our forward line coach in 2012, I'd have vomited. But now that I think about it, I quite like it. Neeld obviously knows what Leigh's capable of. He clearly sees something there. And I've heard Leigh speak. He's not the stupid moron he looked like on the field. Plus he's from Collingwood, so that helps in terms of professionalism and success. This could work nicely. At any rate, he can't be any worse than Josh Mahoney.

Byrnes is crap. Even if we wanted a 27 year old small forward, I wouldn't go near Byrnes. Goldsack is decent, but I can't see him leaving, or them letting him go.

This excites me amazingly. I think Craig will bring a great deal of knowledge to the club.

Royal to coach Midfield, Greaves assistant
titan_uranus replied to Trengove the Magnifique 9's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm kind of happy we've let West go. I wasn't convinced, especially after this year, that he was doing a very good job. Whether Royal will do better remains to be seen. -
Wow. Hewitt v Wawrinka match suspended due to darkness. Hewitt down 5-3 in the fifth. Looks like he'll lose I guess, which sucks, falling at the very last hurdle. Tomic was great to beat Wawrinka and give us a chance, and even took a set off Federer, and Hewitt's been good in both games. So close, if we do end up losing. So close.

The rain in the second test may well cost us the series, looking at the way this Test is going. Sri Lanka have passed our score with 6 wickets in hand. Dilshan and Mathews are set at the crease. They're going to need to press on and get a significant lead, but we're not bowling well. Lyon hasn't convinced me yet. Took 5 wickets in his first innings and only 3 since. Not really troubling the Sri Lanka batsmen. Johnson has, yet again, been a disappointment, and Copeland is economical and decent but nowhere near fast enough to be taking the new ball. Siddle is just OK. Harris was superb but is injury prone, which is unfortunate. Hughes is still crap, Watson's out of form with the bat, so to Clarke, but Marsh's technique should prove to the selectors that people like Hughes and Smith, with ODI/T20 techniques, are not the way to go in Test cricket.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/ex-melbourne-skipper-james-mcdonald-joins-tom-scully-at-greater-western-sydney/story-e6frf9jf-1226136249713 Wow. McDonald, Power, Brogan, they're doing well enticing retirees to come play for them. Should be an eclectic mix of 18 year olds and 30+ year olds.

OK. First of all, to people like Bub, who are using the decision to justify their opinions, don't be ridiculous. The fact that Scully has chosen to go to GWS does not mean he made the decision any earlier than today/yesterday. There is no evidence to suggest otherwise. Scully was always entitled to make his own decision, and if he wants to set his life up financially, that's a perfectly legitimate reason to switch clubs. That's a hell of a lot of money. Having said that, I feel as though the way he made the decision and informed the club has been poor. Have some guts Tom, come down to Melbourne, stand in the rooms of the club that gave you your chance and tell your teammates that you want to move to Sydney to secure your life financially. Don't fly up to Sydney and call the club from there. For that reason, more than anything else, I will boo Scully when he next runs out against us. I will call him a mercenary, I will get angry, I will hope that Sylvia or Moloney or Tapscott lay the fairest but meanest hip and shoulder whenever they get the chance. I will always respect his decision to ensure that he is financially stable for life, but I will never forget the cowardly way he chose to inform the oldest and proudest club in the AFL that he had chosen to play for the youngest and most insipidly branded club. Goodbye Tom. May you never win a premiership.

I wouldn't consider McLean if Carlton paid us to take him. Well, maybe. But the point is clear. McLean is crap.

You're missing a few. 6. The skill level of the side being as poor as it was 7. Michael Newton getting another game.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - 2011 Season Wrap Edition
titan_uranus replied to Striker475's topic in Melbourne Demons
Your thoughts on each of the following, now that the season's done and dusted. Best game - Round 11 v Essendon. No real contest for this one I don't think Worst game - Round 19 v Geelong. Not a lot of competition for that one either, although the early West Coast game, the North Melbourne game, the Richmond loss, and today's loss to Port aren't much better. B&F winner - Brent Moloney Most improved - Stefan Martin. If only because more people expected Watts to make a career for himself but Martin's future was far less certain. Best first year player - Jeremy Howe. No contest here either. Single most positive thing about 2011 - the continued development of young talent. Howe, McDonald, Tapscott, Blease, Strauss, Gawn, Nicholson, Evans all showed things here and there. The fact that we still were able to find young talent is obviously a good thing, and probably one of the few good things. Single most negative thing about 2011 - our skill level being as poor as it was. By now I expected our skill level to be far higher. 2011 in one word - sub-standard -
Inaccuracy....argh I hate it.

The good weather should hopefully help it get to 20,000. Hopefully.

Amazing victory. Pure passion and effort. What may go missing in this is Geelong...peaked too early perhaps? Look at Collingwood and Hawthorn. Hitting their top form at the right time of the year.
-
TMac attack! I've waited two years to see McNamara get another game. He may be nothing special at all, but I reckon he's deserved it after two years of good VFL form.
-
Don't blame the defence. They have to deal with far too many inside 50s, as a result of a pathetic midfield and forward line with too many players who refuse to work hard enough defensively, and a gameplan that involves high risk which leads to loads of turnovers.
-
I don't share the same unbridled enthusiasm, as I'm worried about his defensive capabilities. However I see genuine talent there and he's definitely worth persisting with, especially when he develops a stronger fitness base.
