Martin should not be in anyone's votes. He was awful. One of his worst games for the year. Got pantsed by Warnock in the ruck and ran around generally looking like a headless chicken the rest of the time. 6 - Watts 5 - McKenzie 4 - Trengove 3 - Howe 2 - MacDonald 1 - Garland

Dean Laidley's 'interview' on AFL 360 tonight
titan_uranus replied to jumbo returns's topic in Melbourne Demons
We could do worse. -
I'm going to go the opposite to many and predict a lot of Melbourne supporters will show up. Be honest. Aren't you interested to see what happens this week? Given Carlton itself will draw 35,000 people, I'm tipping a crowd of over 60,000.

We need Sylvia IMO. A gamebreaker. We don't have many/any of them (maybe Jurrah). That's not to say he's an untouchable, nor that he's worth a tonne of money, nor that he's even top 5 atm. But I still think he's a player we need to keep.

A 30-goal loss. Twice.

Eddie McGuire says we are a NO-BRUISE footy club!
titan_uranus replied to Prymke0019's topic in Melbourne Demons
Agree that this is where we stand. The question then is, an experienced coach or a newbie? If, as we seem to agree, we are lacking leadership/direction, does that necessitate, or at least favour, getting someone like Eade/Malthouse/Clarkson/Craig/Laidley in, or would a new coach still be able to inject this via the leadership group and/or his assistants? Personally I don't think we have to get someone with experience. I get the feeling someone like Scott Burns could get this group going. Agree re: Eddie. Also agree re: your hope. We stand a 0% chance, however. -
Yes, if we were a half-decent side, this would be a nice little opening. As it is, it means nothing. I fear what Carlton will do to us.

I feel like there are two possibilities. One is that Schwab was never going to be fired. The other is the club feels as though we can't afford to move our CEO on straight after our coach.

The loss, according to Bailey, was the straw that broke the camel's back. Put it back on the players, then 2 minutes later said it was his fault. Odd.

Bailey now about to talk.

Stynes is labouring. You can see it here if you're interested: http://media.theage.com.au/sport/sports-hq/live-demons-look-ahead-2200985.html Nice quote: 'If you're not challenged you don't develop resilience'

What is your ideal Coaching and Football Dept Setup next year?
titan_uranus replied to Footynut's topic in Melbourne Demons
You sure can. No inspiration. No leadership (leadership comes on-field from the players as well as from the coach during the breaks). Pathetic moves. Also look over the rest of the year. DB's match day coaching was poor. Always reverting to the loose man in defence was predictable and useless. Playing Green on a wing in games where he was looking dangerous as a forward was stupid. Switching players like Watts and Bennell from forward to defence and back to forward again doesn't help their development. Third men up in ruck contests where we were winning the ruck. And of course, a fatally flawed game plan. -
Correct decision, if a somewhat sad one. This was, effectively, the straw that broke the camel's back. Our year has been a disappointment, and it has been clear to me and many others that Bailey's coaching has not been great. In the end, this was the trigger the board needed to move him on. I'm glad it's been done, and I hope that we do our homework and get the best coach available. Whether that's an experienced coach or a new one remains to be seen (but I see no reason for saying that we NEED an experienced coach). I do feel sorry for Dean in that he's now out of a job just like that, but at the same time he wasn't performing and I wasn't hoping to see him hold the job for next year.

Books, Tweets and $500 Grand Contracts
titan_uranus replied to Range Rover's topic in Melbourne Demons
It's easy to do what you want when you're a half-decent footballer in a half-decent side, let alone a good player like O'Brien in a super team like Collingwood. RR's points aren't entirely ridiculous. Sylvia isn't the star he should be. -

Where are Hopgood and Seecamp? And Ryan Ferguson. And Steven Armstrong (at least he has premiership experience!). -
If you had the power, what would you do?
titan_uranus replied to titan_uranus's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm probably being too harsh, but he put his hand up to play, and given how he played, surely he would have known he wasn't going to be right. -
If you had the power, what would you do?
titan_uranus replied to titan_uranus's topic in Melbourne Demons
By sacrificial lamb I mean don't put someone in there who is a legitimate contender for the job next year. It just seems to me that caretakers can get lumped with a lot of negativity and if we keep playing poorly it will harm their chances of getting the job. I don't mean pick someone who isn't any good, I mean, if there is someone (like Viney) who might make a good coach next year, let him come to the process like the rest of the contenders (i.e. with a fresh slate), rather than being burdened with our performances over the next five weeks. -
If you had the ability to do things at the club, what would you do? I would sack Bailey, get a sacrificial lamb into the caretaker role (i.e. not Viney), dissolve the leadership group with the direction that positions in next year's group are up for grabs based on the next five weeks, drop Green, Sylvia and Moloney and play youngsters, ready or not. I would also ban players from doing any media this week. What would you do?
-
I have to admit, this is how I'm feeling right now. If there was a problem with Schwab, and I'm not ruling out that possibility, why has it taken a pathetic on-field performance to trigger his potential sacking? What is it about this week's game that changed things? The link between the game and Bailey, for example, is far, far clearer than with Schwab. Moreover, I still feel that Schwab did plenty of good for this club when he was brought back by Stynes. Again, I'm not saying there's nothing wrong, there may well be plenty wrong. But I'm not sure why it's coming to a head now, and if it's been precipitated by the game yesterday, the phrase 'knee jerk' comes straight to mind.

I don't really think Garry Lyon is qualified to be a CEO of a football club. Director, sure. Coach, yes (but we know he doesn't want to coach). But CEO, no.
-
Agreed.

We could go after as many of them as we wanted. If we don't play with a modicum of effort, which of them is going to want to join us?

It's not that he's angry. It's that he wants to tear it up. Effectively he wants to give up. Hypocritical. I don't expect supporters to just cop what we are given. I don't. Right now I'm devastated with my club, with its 'leaders' and its 'administration', and I'm fed up with constantly being the laughing stock of the AFL. But I would never even contemplate giving it all away like a sook. Like I said earlier, eventually this club is going to get it together and win a flag. When that day comes, I don't want to see people like Diablo and other whingers having a good time. That ought to be reserved for the true supporters who have the balls to stick it out through the sh!t like we're in right now.
