  1. What do people think of the following design for the 2010 jumper??? Changes from the 2009 jumper: - Deeper and darker blue (bordering on black). - Blood red yoke, which starts higher up on the arm cuff for a sharper appearance. - The introduction of '1858' on the back on the jumper just under the collar. We are the oldest football club in the world... be proud of our heritage. - Changes to sponsor logos, e.g. Reebok = RBK, and The Age = Volvo We also need to keep the collar 'V' shaped... not the rounded 'T-shirt' look which are stupid looking. Unless there is a physiological advantage to wearing these rounded collars, I say that we stick with a 'V' shape. Looks more like a football jumper! Any other changes needed???
  2. Yeah, good call Vanlo... agree with ya 100%
  3. Can't help but think that we never really got to see the true value this bloke had to offer us on the field. Never Forgotten. R.I.P

  5. Yeah, but its affectively Pick #80+ in the draft... who cares if he 'looks' lazy or whatever??? Maybe he is, and he will get found out in the big league... OR maybe he will work hard once he gets his shot. The thing is, it is a boom or bust pick... what does it cost us??? He seems to have a bit of X-factor about him, and seems to be a pretty good kid from what I've heard. I would love to pick him up.
  6. Hopefully the list ends up looking like the following: 40. Casey Sibosado Rookie List 4. Best Available 5. >195cm Key Position (Steven Gaertner 198cm, 88kg) 6. >200cm Ruckman
  7. Nah, I really hope that no-one picks him with their P.S.D pick... so we can then rookie him. Imagine: Watts, Sibosado, Rockliff... all getting picked up with our picks this season. We then have what could be POTENTIALLY a formidable forward line in 3-4yrs time. Throw Butcher into that forward-line next season and we could create a dynasty. WE CAN ONLY DREAM.
  8. Yeah, I know what you mean... I probably was a bit over the top in the comparison with Dean Cox, but I think Martin could play that 'extra midfielder' role that Cox plays, not be just another lumbering ruckman. Athletically I reckon he would be better than Cox, and I think that we saw enough last season to suggest that there is a reasonable base to work from in regards to decision making, composure, and skill execution. I rate the kid highly, and hopefully he can keep improving on what he showed last season. Anyway, apologies for hi-jacking the thread... back to Jack Watts. I was on the Nik Nat band-wagon, but after seeing the draft camp results of both he and Watts, I am well and truly in the Watts court now. Hopefully he can be our first fully fledged superstar in years
  9. He has only played approx. 5-yrs of footy, but I thought that his composure and disposal were pretty good for the limited time he has played. Scope for improvement is there... but as we know, some players just never improve (hopefully he and all our other youngsters don't fall in that category). I think the role he plays in '09 will depend a lot on whether Rivers comes good: - Rivers back = Martin rotating through ruck and key positions. - Rivers gone = Martin full-time defender
  10. I to like Martin as a defender... but I honestly wouldn't mind him in the ruck either. He is an athletic freak for a man of his size, I could see him being a 'Dean Cox' type of ruckman after a few years of development.
  11. Yeah, only played 1 senior game in WAFL. My bad. LoL. I'm still not sure on Watts though... maybe it's just me being a heart-broken Melbourne supporter, who always expects the worse. If we get either one of Rich/Watts/Naitanui I'd be happy... I'm just worried that Watts will be our Hodge/Ball/Tambling, and Naitanui will be West Coast's Judd/Franklin.
  12. Thing is... Buddy was playing men prior to AFL. I am not convinced about Watts. He is playing school footy and only just dominating (3-4goals a week)... school is equivalent to 'junior level VFL', whereas the TAC Cup is equivalent to 'junior level AFL'. I'd be expecting him to be really really smashing the opposition (8-9goals a week) in school football, as blokes like Judd, Crawford, Ball, etc. did. In the few times I have seen Watt, I haven't gone away thinking 'Damn! That kid is going to be amazing'. The WAFL or SANFL have proven good guides to how kids will perform against men, because they ARE playing men in those leagues. I'm in the Naitanui corner this draft.
  13. I've been in all the corners... started on Naitanui, then Watts, then Rich. Now I am back on Naitanui again... and I'm staying there. Whilst it is possibly the biggest gamble with the #1 pick in history... the potential is incredible. This kid is something that has NEVER been seen on an AFL field before. He is 200cm (still growing), and moves like Michael Jordan. I don't care if we have to sit back and wait for 3-4yrs whilst this kid learns the game (under Yoda might I add), we are not going to be a contender in that period anyway. Nearly every West Coast supporter on BigFooty want him, and Channel 7 Perth have reported that the Eagles WILL pick him at #2 ahead of Rich. That is saying something... they have had their midfield ravaged by departures, and already have the best ruckman in the land... yet they want Naitanui. Here are the choices we have: Watts - a skinny kid who is kicking 3-4goals a week in the UNDER 18s. Reiwoldt 2.0... but the original was playing dominating footy against MEN in the QAFL before he got drafted. I am not convinced on this kid, he's as much a risk as Naitanui in my eyes. Rich - a man-child who is playing solid footy against MEN in the WAFL. Probably the smallest risk here... what you see is what you get. Not exactly the player we need though. Naitanui - a skinny kid who is playing decent footy against MEN in the WAFL. Still learning the game, yet is performing well in a State competition. The upside here is incredible. Very risky... but the fact that he is playing against men, is why I have him ahead of Watts.
  14. Hahaha... No chance in hell! No go home factor with Morton... his whole family jumped ship and live in Victoria now from what I know. Send over that milkshake though 'Harvs'. We need all the produce we can get to bulk the boy up ;-)
  15. My 'Frankenstein' would be: Height - Martin Build - Sylvia Speed - Davey Endurance - Dunn Agility/evasiveness - Davey Decision making - Undecided Leadership - Miller/Green Work-rate - Jones Reading the play - Garland Kick - C. Johnson Handball - Undecided Mark - Bate Tackling - Whelan
  16. I dunno... something different and light-hearted, if this doesn't build into a big thread, doesn't matter. LoL. If you could build the ultimate Melbourne F.C footballer, using certain attributes of players from our current list... who would you pick??? Eg. Physical attributes Height Build Speed Endurance Agility/evasiveness Mental attributes Decision making Leadership Work-rate Reading the play Skills Kick Handball Mark Tackling Feel free to add more 'attributes' if you think of any.
  17. 22 (23 in August). Here's hoping I'll see a premiership before my 30th B'day... our list is coming together okay.
  18. I watched the game today, it didn't provide a standout like I was hoping. Rich will be a champion, but I think we need a Ruckman/Key Position. If it means anything... was listening to SEN just prior to the game, and they were interviewing the Geelong recruitment bloke. When asked who he would pick if he had pick #1 at his disposal, didn't hesitate for a second and said: "JACK WATTS". The way I look at it is... would Melbourne love to have Nick Riewoldt in the team for a premiership assault in 3-4yrs? I would... and this version can kick straight. LoL. While Naitanui looked incredible with some stuff, he looked really poor in others. I wouldn't be disappointed if we got him, but he is a massive risk I think.
  19. I don't mean to sound like 'I told you so'... but my stab in the dark post a few weeks back about looking toward India for sponsorship and so forth, could actually be on the cards. LoL. Indian's love their sport... and these multi-billionaires love throwing money at it. Sachin Tendulkar earns an estimated US$20-Million every year alone through endorsements. Why not as a club try to tap into that market? Even if we get a small sponsorship, it is still money that we wouldn't have had otherwise. I rate India a better foreign prospect for our club than China.
  20. Why is Dale Thomas not one of the choices in 'Who is the player you most love to hate?'??? He is the biggest F.I.G.J.A.M [censored] to play the game for a number of years. Blokes like Carey, Buckley and Akermanis were hated, but they could back it up because they were superstars. Thomas is nothing but a show-pony who does one or two good things a month, yet he act's like he is the greatest player to play the game. Can't stand him.
  21. Before I get pounced upon... don't take this post as racist, I have nothing against China. Can someone give me some back-ground info on what our connection is with China, and why we are trying to please a distant country by altering our iconic symbol? This has had me stumped since we dropped the 'Demon' mascot so as we wouldn't offend their culture. I understand that they have the largest population in the world... but does the marketing committee actually think that people from the other side of the globe are actually going to spend their hard-earned cash on some sporting club from an unfamiliar sport that is on tens of thousands of kilometers away... or is this just driven by the fact that our number ticket holder happens to be a Chinese immigrant? Here is what I think: 1- BRING BACK THE 'DEMON' 2- If we are going to target a foreign market... why not target India? India is country that is globally known to be 'sport crazy' (unlike China). There is so much money generated by sport (particularly cricket) in that country, that I am surprised at least one AFL club hasn't really tried to tap into it. Their cricketers are treated like Gods and people like Sachin Tendulkar earn an estimated US$20,000,000 each year through endorsement deals alone (Pepsi, Adidas, and Philips to name a few). How could we create a link between our foreign game and cricket? Our great game was born as a winter past-time for cricketers to keep fit. We, the Melbourne Football Club are the oldest club of this sport, and have a rich history. Plus... last summer when India was touring out here, who did we manage to tee-up to wear a Melbourne Football Club jumper? The great Sachin Tendulkar himself... if this man is seen endorsing our club, then I think we are on a potential gold-mine in India. One other thing... if the marketing committee is targeting China solely on the base that it has the largest population in the world, perhaps it should take note that by 2050, India is expected to overtake China as the most populated country on the planet. Let's look ahead. I know that this is unlikely to happen… but I'm interested if anyone thinks this idea has any merit.

Can someone fill me in as to why playing Frawley at CHF is such a laugh? We have been told Bailey has a knack of developing players (and we've already seen it in action), so why does naming a 193cm developing player sound so silly? We are obviously looking to the future... lets see what Frawley has got to offer us down in the forward-line. If he doesn't show much, then that's fine... what have we lost from trying? However, if he does do alright... how good would it be in 3-5yrs time knowing that the kid can actually hold his own in the forward-line should we ever need him to be thrown down there because of injury or whatever. 2-3yrs ago people probably would of laughed at the thought of Rivers playing down forward... "blah, blah, blah... leave him down back... blah, blah, blah... don't mess with the kids development", yet after seeing him thrown down forward on the odd rare occasion, we have seen he can actually do alright down there as well. I am really impressed from what I have seen from Bailey so far (in terms of developing the kids)... so personally, I am one supporter who looks forward to seeing the team-sheet and seeing who is playing in a different position to normal. I think that there is no harm in trying things whilst we are going through a re-build. You never learn from the chances you never take.
  23. Look what I found on eBay... our #1 choice of alternative jumper so far. Looks good to me
  24. Sorry to bump this thread... Apparently Ben Cousin's is making his come-back this week... for the Wallan F.C in the Riddell District Football League. This is 100% serious
  25. Yeah, it didn't score though... so just a 'shot' not a 'scoring shot'. Meh, who cares!!!
