Was a fan of him in his draft year but haven't really paid attention to his career much. The tightness for our list spots suggest we probably don't have the room to fit him in.

Yes it's the same Mick Malthouse who's a 3× premiership coach. He's way out of fashion with the game now so I do get that. But at the time his comment was pretty relevant. Yes Jack I've known your opinion on him for a while now. I'm reminded of it because it's constantly brought up by you. It's like you're barracking for him to not get selected in the first round. Spot on. GWS have the luxury of letting him develop in the 2's and not feel that he needs to rush in. And this again.

Yeah and it's not about who's right and wrong. I just think recruiters are putting more premium on talented ruckman more then we've seen before. We've seen how popular ruckman were in the mid season draft, but now even with the ruck merry go around thats been talked up in this year's draft period. You look at the way the Gawn/Jackson worked. This would have opened a fair few recruiters eyes about the way this can work. Have a solid senior ruckman ruck for about 70-80% of the game with the younger apprentice spend majority up forward but also pinch hit that 20-30% during the game. If it's GWS that are looking at Mac Andrew then they already have Pruess, Flynn and Briggs who are all solid enough at least to hold down the number one role for a few a years while Andrew developes under them.

Of course we drafted him on talent as well. All players have talent. But as Jason Taylor said, you're drafting him to be the next best ruckman for the next 10 years. So you're always looking at what he can become when they start to hit their peak in 5 years time. You'll get the occasional jack in the box like Grundy, Jackson, Naitanui who just come in and make a sudden impact. They're rare breeds. Just remember Jackson was still tossing up whether to focus on on football or basketball full time in his under 16's year so there was still some uncertainty on him. Most ruckman are a slow burn, hence why they tend to last longer on a list compared to a stock standard midfielder. Clubs aren't drafting Mac Andrew based on what he can do in his 2nd or 3rd year but what he can produce as a full time ruckman when he hits 24. All they want to do is see gradual improvement each year his on the list. Could go the other way and he impacts in his 2nd year like Jackson? No one saw that coming..

Because the game has swayed more towards athleticism then actual footballers. The game simply got quicker. The recruiting landscape changed in the mid 2000's when clubs were willing to use early picks on players who could could run quicker and jump higher then the footballer who was a bit slow but could find the ball naturally. Two examples for instance. 1. Mark McGough was a 188cm 89kg who was drafted to Collingwood in the 2002 draft. Well famous for his 2002 anzac medal as an 18 year in his first year. He was an absolute ball magnet who was powerfully built, but one thing he lacked was speed and athleticism. The perfect prototype footballer that was built more for the 80's and 90's style football. He quickly got found out as each year went by when the game got quicker and the game chewed him out and spat him out. 2. Jack Watts and Luke Jackson. Both tall and skinny players who had limited football background due to spending more time playing basketball at underage level were taken early in the draft. Watts was known for his athleticism and speed for such a tall kid. Melbourne was criticised for taking Jackson at pick 3 because they picked him on his raw potential what he may become in a few years time as Jason Taylor said his the To Hell and Back doco. His raw athleticism and good body of work that he produced in the 12 months of his draft year was the reason why Melbourne picked him instead of the likes of Lachie Ash, Caleb Serong and Hayden Young who would have been the safe and easy picks because they're more natural footballers.

I'm certain of it without hesitation. If he doesn't go top 10 then quote this comment on draft night and I'll happily wear egg on my face and own up to it.

I've heard he's actually been asked by AFL clubs or club to work as a part time recruiter but turned it down as he felt he hadn't yet gotten the necessary experience he needs. As you said, good on him for it, but he's not my cup of tea.

Because I think a key forward or another gun outside midfielder is a suitable need for us then a ruckman? That doesn't mean that he still wont go top 10.

Jesus WJ it's getting a bit tiresome don't you think.. We get it, that you simply don't rate Mac Andrew at all and you'll find all avenues in justifying your argument. Getting sucked in to what Knightmare says is part of the issue. Let me just remind that this is the same bloke that during draft time back in 2013 had compared Christian Salem to Taylor Hunt, had at one stage rated Jake Bowey in the 40's range and openly said that Melbourne had made a mistake picking a ruckman at pick 3. It's actually unbelievable he is far off the mark each year. But it's his opinion and good on him for sticking his head out. While he watches a lot of junior development and does have some good insight at times, he let's himself down with some uneducated opinions. Think it's time to accept that Mac Andrew is most certainly a top 10 pick. There's enough jungle drums beating around the recruiting circles that holds enough weight that he's most certainly going to go in that top 10. He's not the top 10 best player in the land, but he's being picked on potential and scope of improvement as are all kids. Realistically what's stopping Mac Andrew from playing 5-8 games next year? Nothing. He's certainly very capable of it, and his development and growth will go up another level once his in the AFL system. I can see him getting games, mostly up forward with about 30-20% in the ruck. If Melbourne were somehow able to get into the top 10 pick then in my opinion I probably still wouldn't use a pick on him. There's far more greater need and talent that suits our list.

It's potentially looking highly unlikely that he may not get a spot on our list. I'll wait to trade period ends before we can fully get a clear understanding what our list looks like in terms of space. Right now some of the recent re-signings have left me scratching my head.

No such thing as gentlemen agreement. He'll go top 10. And even if he drifted out to our pick I would hope we don't pick him as he's not what we're after.

I'm guessing we aren't making room for Andy Moniz-Wakefield by the looks of it and now seems Taj Woewodin may also miss out on a spot.

I'm yet to see this so called super speed that he supposedly has. I'm sure he's stoked as hell he's been given another free run on the list but he's as depth as they come. Even when Langdon had to miss against Brisbane with concussion the club preferred James Jordon instead of Baker on the wing. I would have even preferred Declase signed up then Baker. At least he's looked more natural as a wingman. I'd be spewing also if I was Jay Lockhary right now..
