  1. Completely agree with these two posts. What's more Bub, constantly calling the Admin and / or Footy Department weak for not making public their enquiries just doesn't make sense.
  2. Didn't see your response Colin, until I signed in today and was alerted to it. Like you I don't wish to get into a to and fro, and GL's support for CS was definitely a blind spot for him. I have only one other response, - as a current commentator if he believes there is mental brittleness amongst the playing group he is entitled to call it. Roosy, referred to it himself often enough, and most of us must wonder if it is a weakness which we will overcome any time soon. Every one of us would think we have come a long way to either overcoming it or disproving it with a victory over North tomorrow.
  3. Get with it Redleg, this is a fan site, we must maximise the level of bile, venom, toxicity, animosity and hatred at every opportunity.
  4. You're right about losing consistently, but the breaking of these embarrassing records began in 2014. 2014 - Carlton and Adelaide, and Adelaide oval 2015 - winning Round 1 v GC, Geelong and Kardinia (whatever its called now), Collingwood, winning last round V GWS. And actually I think the Brisbane win broke a long losing run as well. Some, (many), of them were pretty scrappy, but it was a glorious feeling to break those damned unhappy records.
  5. I think you are being pretty unfair to Gary Lyon. He never wanted the involvement after the '186' game. He responded - reluctantly-, to his dying mate Stynes' call. It would have been extraordinarily difficult to refuse. As for the results of that involvement, does anyone actually think that Lyon didn't try to do his best for the club and his mate? When things don't work out, everyone involved look like they are fools or incompetents. I listen to the SEN breakfast show for about an hour most days and all I have heard Lyon claim about Melbourne, is that he has a personal interest in and keeps a closer eye on the Demons than he does with other clubs, (for example, he has mentioned that he drops by training). I have not heard anything from him that could be classified as a destructive comment about the team, he has largely stated what all Melbourne supporters are aware of, but most other fans would not know. That is the other thing that needs to be borne in mind, he is not just talking to Demon fans.
  6. I got a call from iSelect yesterday at about 2:00pm, and was told they were calling me as a Melbourne member. I was going to ask if they were a new sponsor, but in the back of my mind I thought they already were a minor sponsor and so didn't ask. Are they brand new or upgrading?
  7. Surely you mean confidence rather than arrogance. What mentality does arrogance bring that is positive or constructive? Amongst several synonyms for arrogance are 'conceit' and 'hubris',
  8. I noticed that the Hawks were again using a tactic that they were finally penalised for late last year. That was having a man move up close to the man on the mark and block him when the player with the ball played on. I didn't think that was allowed and if it is, why the hell aren't we doing it. The Hawks were a bit more subtle this year than they were last year, but it sure pizzed me off seeing them take that advantage yesterday.
  9. Whilst I don't give a S?"! about Hawthorn, other than that we start returning their favours of the 9 years prior to 2016, for the sake of accuracy Clarkson did not foreshadow catastrophic changes this round. His actual statement was "We need to correct that, because if we continue to have performances like that then there'll need to be catastrophic change, and that's not usually the way we go about doing things." It's the media that are responsible for this misconception because they have peddled that line all last night and this morning, ever since the Hawthorn lineup was announced. Anyway - just sayin'.
  10. Our membership numbers have the appearance of almost dragging themselves hand over hand towards the 40k line. Only 630 members added in a little over 3 weeks. Sure, there were three losses in that time, but they were fighting losses, heavily influenced by injuries and suspensions. Will be interesting to how much of a difference Sunday's win will make. I suspect if there is not an increase of about 500 this week, it might mean we are reaching the limits of what our supporter base can sustain. We already know that we have one of the lowest supporter bases of the Melbourne clubs. Let's hope that this has been a temporary pause and that we can push on to 41 or 42k.
  11. Completely agree, have never understood why the coaches haven't liked him. I reckon he has played a good role in most games he had played in. Takes good contested marks, pretty accurate and long kick for goal. Always makes a contest in the ruck. Dishes out good bumps and sticky tackles. Anyone questioning his courage just hasn't paid attention. These have been my observations of him since 2014. Somebody posted a criticism that included the fact that he had never kicked more than 14 (or maybe 16), goals in a season for us. He did that in 2014, the only year he played enough games to kick substantial numbers of goals, and the important thing about that year is that our top goalkicker only managed 20.
  12. Magnificent Mono! By the way I'm guessing Pig is Salem?
  13. I'm no expert, but I would have thought this kind of reaction was indicative of a more significant impact on him than a very mild concussion.
  14. Have i missed it, or has no one posted this report? RUCKMAN Jake Spencer will miss the next six to seven weeks, after he suffered an AC joint injury during Monday night’s ANZAC Day Eve clash against Richmond at the MCG. Spencer, who is set to see a surgeon on Wednesday, was one of three Melbourne players, including Tim Smith and Christian Petracca, to suffer injuries in its 13-point loss. It has been revealed that Smith, who copped a knee to his chest during the first half against the Tigers, has a fractured rib and punctured lung. At this stage, it remains unclear how long Smith will be sidelined. General manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said Spencer was set to have surgery, but Smith would be monitored before a timeframe was placed on his return. “Jake received a knock to his AC joint early in the game last night and was ruled out prior to half-time. He had scans today (Tuesday), which showed damage to the AC joint. He will consult a surgeon tomorrow, with the most likely option being surgery later in the week,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
  15. I reckon the big crowds will come back for the Queens Birthday game. It was built on the rivalry which grew out of the fifties and early 60's between Melb and Collingwood. We have been pretty irrelevant for a decade and Collingwood beat us continuously for 8 or 9 years. We have now won the last three games and pies supporters that I know are itching to get us back. What would hold back a big attendance from them is whether they believe their team has a reasonable prospect of winning. If it is a big contest it attracts the neutral MCC and AFL members as well. On the negative side the next day is a workday.
  16. Max is a least 11 months away. He would need to be redrafted later this year as he was delisted at the end of 2016.
  17. You've got to be kidding! A ruckman and a tall forward down by half time requiring Watts to go to the ruck and you're cursing them?
  18. Full of admiration for the team but some worrying signs. - We've been dominant but same old goal scoring problems - We have been playing with huge intensity, but can we keep going at that rate? - three players with injuries serious enough to require treatment with one in hospital, will that take a toll by the end of the game.
  19. The actual figure is not absolutely clear but I am sure it is not as low as an average of 4 games. Consider that 74 listed players who played 0 games plus Bob Murphy would give you an average of 4 games. Not that many players last to 300, but for every player that plays 100 games there have to be 24 others that play none. Of course in the final analysis it is not games played but years on a list which matters in terms of payments. Look at a guy like Spencer, I believe this is his 10th year counting his time on the rookie list. Daniel Menzel in his 8th year with not many games. There are plenty of others A few years back the AFLPA was claiming the the average career was only 2.5 years. That didn't ring true to me and a quick calculation of players who had been on the Melb lists, didn't support that. I notice the AFLPA no longer use this figure at all. I have found two other figures, one from an article by Michelangelo Rucci: He would be just quoting common statements that have been mentioned 'GENERALLY, it is a short career - four years for the average AFL player. But that is long enough now for a player to collect more than $1 million, along with free tertiary education, a cache of frequent-flier points and valuable off-field connections'. http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-players-laughing-all-the-way-to-the-bank-average-salary-now-265179/news-story/e7d0f6b9e24362675f64b1ffc50432ed The second from a paper by the School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health The University of Western Australia: One would expect that it is based on some analysis of data and so it claims. 'The average playing career is approximately 6.2 years' (5). That reference came from 5. AFL Players’ Association. Player retirement data since 1997. http://hpeu.com.au/media/8963/afl-careers-and-injuries_perspectives-of-past-players.pdf I am quite surprised at that figure of 6.2 years, but probably because of the myths and misinformation which has been peddled in the past. As I said earlier it is interesting that the AFLPA is no longer using the 2.5 year claim that it was making before the last agreement. Just to be clear, I am not arguing about player salaries here, only trying to clarify what the true career span of players on AFL lists is.
  20. Isn't the average 4 Years rather than 4 games?
  21. I'm assuming these comments are partly related to the Melbourne incidents. There are differences though aren't there? A punch - to the head - off the play vs a bump - to the body- in play (or just a little late).
