HOWE snubbed for mark of the year.
deanox replied to Bombay Airconditioning's topic in Melbourne Demons
Howe's mark was better than those 3 imo. Running back with the flight for a speccy where he gets hang time as good as any of the others is simply unbelievable. To be honest I can't recall a mark like it ever. Elliot's was good but for that type of mark the are better. The payee collapses under him so hang time is short and he isn't high when he takes it. Schultz is good, best hang time, but chest mark. NN is a good strong Mark and amazing that he takes it over the back of the pack but I really didn't think it was as impressive as Howe back with the flight. For me Howe is the best followed by Schultz then NN. The goals is a great competition. Ablett's is the classic impossible snap. No one should be able to do that, yet he meant it. That is contrasted with the other two which are the long running goal. Walker's was better than Franklin's, 4 bounces is awesome. Franklin's was amazingly long but it bounced through and it that respect is quite lucky. I hope Buddy doesn't win by weight of popular vote and hype. Ablett will probably win for unbelievable factor and also because I think the other two will suck votes off each other. -
The if you can't get Dustin Martin get Reece Conca Thread
deanox replied to What's topic in Melbourne Demons
Probably relevant here (on mobile so feel free to fix the link for me mods!): http://m.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/tigers-contract-fight-20130909-2tg3x.html I'd be tabling an offer for both players. It sounds like they can't afford both. Martin also sounds like he is asking for 25 year old gun money not 22 year old gun money. We have cap space to burn and I'd be happy to take him on if Roos is (I think we've got most of the poor off field culture out of the club and we now need to add the onfield quality. Tigers would want more than we would want to offer in trade terms regarding picks for Martin and probably for Conca too (I expect they would want a first rounder for both, I'd give a pick 2 for Martin only if it was a 5 year deal, and only give a second rounder for Conca). Who knows their list well? Are there any gaps we could trade to fill? -
Another thing we have lacked over the years is midfielders who can kick goals when drifting forward. Nathan Jones can do this but give the is no one around him in the midfielder we really need him to stay there. I like that Kent knows where the goals are and reads the crumbs well. Very important to have mids who can find the goals.

I hope this multiple succession plan options is the way we go but that wasn't the impression I got. Happy to read it again though and see if I got it wrong. I would however be very surprised if Peter Jackson has even considered Roos as CEO. He has no business management experience. That is a terrible idea in my opinion.

Casey Scorpions v Werribee Tigers - VFL First Semi Final
deanox replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
other than Clisby, who could have played but didn't? I can't think of anyone else who qualified, didn't play and want injured. I also can't identify anyone who was sent off for end of season surgery even though they could have kept playing. Can you identify anyone who fits is these categories? -

mate all available players played as far as I can tell with perhaps the exception of Clisby (unsure went he was out). No one was sent off for surgery unless their season was over anyway. I thought we could have made a couple extra available to qualify but Melbourne selection cones first for Melbourne players. If we'd have dropped players to be qualified we'd have been crucified in the media and by everyone else. -

So disappointed for the boys. It makes you lament the 2 point loss to the hawks a couple of weeks ago, could have been a series changer. Interesting stats with Couch and Magner getting lots of it but only one other player getting above 18. It seems similar to the problem Melbourne has with ball winning. -
His average stats for the year are pretty much the same as vineys (a handball and a half extra per game, about 19 disposals to 17.5). Toumpas averaged 12. Good first years from Viney and wines, both have a long way to go to be afl players. But Toumpas' stats aren't bad, especially considering he had a couple of Very low disposal games. Give the kid another preseason or two and let him find his way. He looks to have all the attributes to be a player plus Viney and wines are the same type of player, Toumpas gives us something else.

Casey Scorpions v Werribee Tigers - VFL First Semi Final
deanox replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
If Casey can topple the tigers is there any prospect of more Melbourne listed plays coming back from injury or otherwise for the game against Box Hill? Clisby, Spencer, even Hogan? One or two of those could be the difference. -
From all reports Sylvia loves the club and i reckon he will stay. He'll love the opportunity to be part of something on the way up and might even get a couple of finals of of it at the end of his career. Watts needs to stay if his "waiting for the coach" comments had any truth to them. He will look like a massive hypocrite if he leaves. I expect both will stay.

If PJ turned his mind to any of the things you mentioned you may as well call him Cameron Schwab. This is exactly what everyone hates Schwab for; he thought we were on track on the field and started worrying about this other stuff to try and re-brand and rebuild us of the field. If it cane of on the field he would have been hailed a genius. Let's get some runs on the board with our on field stuff first.

He lost overall by 1.6 points, but was docked 1.4 points (7.8 vs 9.2 for Boyd/Patton) for "size" when he is 195cm and 97kg. Patton is 197 cm and 100 kg. Not much different of you ask me, certainly not worth that big a gap in points. They also go on to talk up his versatility paying forward and back but is not scored according to that either. Regardless the or of 100 criteria gives equal weir to marking, versatility etc. and ranks size and strength in different categories both equal to above. I'd much rather a player who can mark than is versatile, and leadership I agree is a bonus, and not important in a draftee: I'd much rather on field skills. It is an interesting subjective take on it though. And it suggests we could be entering a new era of power forwards as the guard changes a bit.

To be honest I haven't heard that roos meet the staff, I thought I read that the staff were told. That would seem odd though given the lengths we've gone to keeping it a secret, but not unbelievable if it's only to be announced within the week.

you have 14 but you named Mcdonald twice. I'd add Matt Jones though so that's Ok! The interesting thing about it is that include Matt Jones, that list only contains 3 midfielders. It has 3 KPDs, 4 KPFs, 1 Ruck, 2 medium/small defenders and a small forward/wing (Kent). To be competitive the 14 should have 10 midfielders.

Out of interest I imagine Maccas in tecoma might create jobs for school kids but it may also kills jobs at local pizza, fish n chips and take away places.

universities in Melbourne have full fee paying places of you don't get the marks you need. On Roos' salary they will be easily obtainable. He may want to study something in Perth however, they have good mining related courses over there. Between Melbourne, Monash and the other Victorian universities, most of the other general and specialist courses are covered quite well I believe.

is a day late but would be an amazing birthday present nonetheless. I won't accept it until it's on our website. But damn I'm excited.

Not a bad thread in that it brings up some discussion points rather than more messianic adoration (of which I am proudly part of!) 1. It has been only 3 years (hasn't it?)I think and he had still been involved in coaching in Sydney and football in analytical capacity. 2. A risk with all coaches, but I am hoping he can help build the culture of the club and set elite standards that will last past his tenure. Yes, I'd love him to win us a flag in his first 2-3 years but I'm more interested in building a club that is successful in terms of repeat finals, lots of wins, etc. over a decade than winning a flag then dropping back down the bottom the next year, and need sustained success to get our brands and supporter base back on track 3. No. His current coaching and media contacts are width a similar ball park figure, even if it is a touch lower, the additional work goes and effort will balance the extra pay. 4. Interesting point, I've not revised his development of players but he had since spent time working with the development academy, may have learnt new skill sets. Also has track history of getting the best out of bit part players, so could really improve our existing list by bringing out their strengths. 5. Not relevant. Over history, not many coaches have won one flag. Hardly any have won multiple flags. Fewer have had ultimate success at a second club. The reason we want a premiership coach isn't because that makes him more qualified to win another flag but it's because he has credibility and experience in the role. 6. Good point, so knows? He will be bringing his own assistants and is are all out of contract. 7. Good point but if a couple of pays cone on we have a solid core just no superstars. 8. Who does she want?

Anyone see what happened to Spencer? Down off play with no one near him but minson? Got up and was taken off for a breather.

Geelong v Casey Scorpions Qualifying Final
deanox replied to KC from Casey's topic in Melbourne Demons
I'm surprised a call hasn't been put into Macdonald to come back for the last couple! Or we can get Magner back from injury And those 4 MFC players come back, plus Clisby, that's a very substantial 6 ins. -
Did the Sydney play get up and play on? If so it should not constitute the force required to report. It was a touch late and accidentally high. He did everything right, tick the elbow keep feet on the ground etc. It was an attempt at a fair bump that accidentally got him high. Free kick is all it should be, maybe one week for the late bump. But given the afl he will get 3.

Geelong v Casey Scorpions Qualifying Final

Bad luck scorps, difficult with the lack of AFL listed players. Damn a win last weekend could have made a big difference to this finals campaign. KC any idea who we are likely to get next week? -
look I understand what you are saying, but people are interviewed for key, high level positions all the time in the business world. There are good ways and bad ways it can be done. Even in the business world someone can impress when they should be of their league. Regardless of how we performed under Neeld and regardless of how successful he was in that position, Neeld obviously had the runs on the board across the AFL community to be considered strongly for multiple coaching roles. I have no doubt he could have been a senior good, maybe not a premiership winning coach, but as we've seennot many are. Maybe not at Melbourne, but as we've seen, not many are. Different circumstances could have made him the right candidate. I don't think it is the presentation or the interview process that was the problem. Neil Craig has said a number of times "Melbourne needs to decide what type of coach it wants/needs". I don't think we understood what type of coach we needed last time. In my opinion, we thought we needed a defensive minded coach with experience at elite clubs. We thought that sort of coach could build our culture to a defensive minded club with elite standards, in line with modern footy. What we needed was probably an experienced coach who can build culture from the ground up, who the players will respect and want to play for, and who can bring those elite standards as part of the new culture. If we know what we need, the interview process will help us get it.
