TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 4

Is quicker than you think. Harder on the spread. Plays on the edge. -
Demonland Player of the Year - Round 3
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Many have called out ANB's kick that cost us a goal in the last and then not given him votes. Yet the same people are willing to give Kent votes for 2 goals 3 or Jones for 0 goals 3 or Hunt for turning the ball over late in the 3rd with seconds to go that lost us the momentum. One obvious turnover out of 28 disposals. 6 clearances and 10 tackles should not remove the other great work that impacted our overall performance. Its almost by calling it out you know you're in the wrong. -
Viney appears to have lost his burst acceleration into and out of the contest that saw him at his best last year. It appears that Goody is making him accountable at the contest (something that he has rarely been without a specific job) and I believe this is making him second guess his instinctive attack on the contest and away from it. If having lost form still equates to 25 disposals, 5 clearances and 8 tackles then I look forward to him hitting his straps. Watts was great for 3 quarters and then ran out of petrol. His attack on the ball and contest yesterday should be the weekly expectation regardless of his role.

POST MATCH DISCUSSION - Round 3

Extremely disappointed but that is certainly better than being demoralised like normally playing the cats. Our inaccuracy is what stopped us having the game beyond doubt but what cost us the win was allowing 2 late goals in the third. It was extremely poor leadership that let us with our play hand them both scoring opportunities allowing them to come into the last with their tails up. Hunt was immense and could be anything. Good to see a quiet Oliver game when tagged still equates to 27 touches and the same defensive effort you would expect. Amazing that the forward line we cobbled together nearly kicked 100 points (and 32 scoring shots). Viney is lacking acceleration in and out of the stoppage. I feel we have been giving him roles when he just needs to be released to attack the ball and man. Tyson's lack of run and aggression really stands out in the new fearless style of play. Needs to find serious form or will not be starting 22 by years end. ANB and Stretch showing what good development looks like. I would not make too much change next week. Spencil in and maybe Pederson for Weideman for some extra support and maturity. -

Those mentioning ANB out have obviously forgotten his first game and did not take note of who may have kept Simpson to 14 touches on the weekend. No way he will be dropped. Hoping to see Smith in with Bernie and possibly Kent for Angus if he is not right. -

Petracca played lazy footy for 3 quarters then decided to have a dip in the last. -

Vince for Lewis and being we are at Etihad I would swap Hogan for Kent and go with a mid sized forward line built around Weideman, Watts and Trac and swarming smalls. Or is there a sneaky chance that they bring Bull Smith in to play Hogans' role.....wouldn't put it past Goody. -

Ignore his draft position or whether you think he will be good longer term. He struggled to get the ball yesterday playing mainly on a wing and when he did he slowed or turned over potential scoring opportunities. He was good round 1 not great. Nothing wrong with heading back to Casey to work on his craft and confidence. -

When he and Watts were in the side we continued to play Watts as the relief ruck last year? -

Melksham hits targets. Will play all year if his form is as per the first two rounds. -

Looked slow. We need to decide what his role is. He needs to fix his disposal. -

Pretty much bang on what I was about to write line for line. Would add Melksham to the four you mentioned. Thought we lacked the spread and use of angles to move the ball that we did so well last week. -
Same as I said after round 1 last year, today will show if we have turned the corner or are just having a peak around it. Said it with trepidation last year I say it with full confidence this year that we have. Something feels different. I go expecting us to smack them not hoping. Come on Dee's Raise Hell.

The Petracca v McCartin debate reprised

But how many of the games elite stars (father sons aside) come from outside the top 10? You are certainly more likely to find them early. -

Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Whispering_Jack's topic in Melbourne Demons
I think he's well balanced. Accepts McCartin injuries aside will probably be a good player. The problem is they saw a massive whole in their list and just plugged it with the number 1 pick who best fitted need rather than chasing need later in the draft or through trade. It is pretty obvious Trac has special traits that you expect with a top pick and only his body or his application wil stop him being elite. The issue is with McCartin he will at best be a meat and potatoes good player. Would be an interesting discussion if they had taken Wright instead. -
Not if you watched them play the last two weeks.

#heartbeatstrue was fitting when we were rubbish and loyalty (or insanity) was the only reason to follow. #raisehell certainly fits with where we are and what we want represent. I love it.

TEAM SELECTION AND MATCH PREVIEW - ROUND 2
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Demonland's topic in Melbourne Demons
Melbourne of any other year lose this game this week. However I have noticed a different Melbourne in post game interviews. I feel it will be different this year. -
Oscar plays the game like an 18 game young key defender finding his feet. Just like any young player they have inconsistencies in effort and execution. However with a mid or forward they usually control not being in the game at those points which is not something you can control as a defender. It is pretty obvious the kid will end up something special. He is not quick but covers the ground well, he reads the ball beautifully, has a very well timed spoil and has better execution than his brother. His body work is better but lacks impact due to his immaturity. He is not holding a quality mature defender out of the side so he should continue to be played and we should accept that you are likely to get inconsistencies in one so young but it will accelerate his development and pay dividends when we need it most in coming years.

Mentioned in another thread but an inside mid who has 36 touches at 91% DE is almost unheard of.
