Sellar if fit. Otherwise needs to be Chip.
-
Our predicament now shows we need if anything another mature ruckman as back up not another kid to go with Gawn and Fitzpatrick.
-
Sounds like what people said about Kreuzer. With our record I dont think we can spare any of our high picks they all need to be loaded to find us elite mids.
-
JD, no disrespect to Grundy as he can certainly play but if you dont understand we have a third world midfield and that needs to be the priority then something is wrong. Give me Toumpas at 3, Wines, O'Rourke, Mayes, or Martin at 4 and one of Stringer, Garlett or Kennedy at 13.
-
If Toumpas is available with one of our picks and we take a ruckman over him I will seriously vomit.

Is that you salivating over Sanderson again Hardnut? I think it is missing that the Adelaide players were already adept enough at getting the ball and using it as well as had the endurance to get to the right spot in the first place. I think young footballers have that ability to learn quickly but dont have the strength or the endurance to do it all game. Its the old ones that struggle with it and thats our biggest issue.
-
If Clark plays - we win two of our last three.

Hardnut, the process and appointment of Bailey and Neeld has nothing to do with their ability to coach but all to do with lack of due dilligence by those that chose them. The same process can arse you a lemon or lemonade. On this basis I find it has no relevance to the output of the coach as a full process with the same objective may have come to the same outcome. I struggle with your concern with the lack of diligence and time with choosing the coach yet you call for him to be culled one sixth into his appointment. Is that not the pot calling the kettle black? I agree no list is perfect and dont disagree that another coach would have got more immediately out of the list but if that process gave no confidence that would give us the best opportunity to win a flag then who cares. I will take 2 years of rubbish to cull a list and fix structures, fitness and culture if I get to see a flag in over 3-4 years of middle of the road perfomances that see us make up the eight at best. I find your critique of them just as hard to stomach when you then call for the rash decision of the coaches head one sixth of the way through his coaching term. Regardless of whether the appointment process is right, Neeld was chosen and he deserves time to right the ship in the best way he see fit to make us successful.

I have no issue with Neeld recruiting and developing a team to play the way he thinks will bring success. That is why I accept that I need to see what changes he makes after an initial year of assessment. I too would like to see Morton and Gysberts played ahead of Magner and Couch but Morton has had his opportunities and to bring back Gysberts who is renowned for low stamina for a first game on ball at the top end would not make much sense. I hope we see more of them over the remainder of the year. I agree that we have lost to some average team but none have as average a midfield as ours and until we bridge that gap with other sides we will continue to lose.
-
I am not protecting anyone. I accept that the list is seriously low on midfield talent and our players do not have the stamina or the instinct to spread both ways. I am not sold on Neeld but I dont understand how I can possibly rate him until he has the time to rectify our midfield, general conditioning and culture. I would think based on your football knowledge you recognise that this cannot be achieved in one summer when youre coming from as far back as we are. And anyone that doesn't think we're coming from a long way back should just watch 186 again if they need to be reminded.

I dont completely understand your agenda hardnut but whatever it is take it somewhere else. Our forwardline tonight on paper was the worst you could possibly see and it really was only second to our disposal forward of centre. . The list was rated highly based on where players were chosen in the draft not based on their output or the balance of the list. Our mids were rubbish last year and they're rubbish this year

6. Nicholson 5. Jetta 4. Sylvia 3. Grimes 2. Jones 1. Dunn

The list - who goes at the end of the year?

Jimmi do you expect to be taken seriously with Magner in this list? -
I had been wondering where Jack Martin fits in today's footy but then watched Wells, Hill and Jetta tear up games on the weekend. It will be interesting to see how hard we go after him.
-
I did not get the impression he had no tank. Will be keen to see his draft camp results.
-
He was more outside than inside but had excellent disposal, looked balanced in the contest and most importantly seemed to know when and how to push into space. Also really good height for a mid. Did not seem to have express speed but wasn't slow either.
-
In: Spencer, Jetta, Watts Out: Jamar, Bennell, Bate
-
We have a side who cant dispose of the ball and has limited entrenched defensive capabilities yet you want to us to play through the middle? Dont we already get scored against too easily? I note Collingwood is flag favourite and are still the number 1 team for playing around the boundary .
-
Of course Neeld should come under criticism but for mine there are too many limiting factors that he has not had enough control over at this time to effectively critique or lay the blame primarily at him. He did not draft the majority of the list. He did not ignore the defensive aspects of football for the last 5 years He did not leave mature players who are not up to it on the list for 6-8 years He did not develop a list with poor endurance and general conditioning We are coming from a long way back and his attempts at righting the above factors I think has been the right approach. The trading for Clark was a fantastic move, Taggert and Tynan both with limited view appear to be good mid range picks and Sellar as a cheap mature key defensive post has served well when played there. He has given the mature players no favouritism and has allowed the mature NQR's every opportunity to show what they have. I am sure most will be gone next year. By all reports the squad has been thrashed on the track maybe to the detriment of their actual performances and injury to improve their conditioning as quickly as possible in preparation for anoth bigger pre season next year. Neeld has not been perfect, our poor starts to games and a lack of moving to a plan B when in trouble is of concern however most find it hard to charge because of the other factors. I am sure the focus will move more firmly onto him next year when he has had 12 months to further influence these factors.

The MFC 'B-side' in the AFL competition
Lil_red_fire_engine replied to Curry & Beer's topic in Melbourne Demons
If Jurrah had played this season we would likely not be in the position we are in. Agreed he has defensive deficiencies but on a bad day he would snag a couple on a good day he would win a game. When paired with Clark for the first half of the year and not being forced to be the main target who knows what could have happened. I think Watts development this year (including his ability in the contest) is being underrated by alot and his progression in his role as a distributor from half back who can play on all sorts should not be ignored. Goddard, Enright, Harry O , have made careers from it and would all be close to first picked in their sides for the importance they hold to the teams structure. However I think we both get back the same point this is not the issue the issue is our injuries have not been to our mids and that is where our most glaring issue has still lied. -

To say Clark, Jurrah and maybe Watts aren't possibly in our top 6 I would say is interesting. I would agree though that it is about the mids and interestingly none of the injured mentioned are core mids. It seems weird to say since we have messed up previous drafting but I think if we handle this draft/trade period right which I expect us to do regardless of where we take Viney the wheel will turn very quickly. -
Deelirious. I think you have missed the tongue planted firmly in my cheek. Feel free to read my previous posts for what I really think.

I am sure if Sanderson was coaching us we would have won today.
-
Its not about being optimistic but being realistic. Did you enjoy our play in the first quarter when the game was on an even keel? You say we lose the game due to spread but then go on about contested ball WTF? We lost the contested possession count by 13 (we were down by 2 at 3 qtr time),we drew even at the clearances. and won the tackle count by 16. I dont think that was our issue Bennel was not playing midfield so how does rotating Petterd through their help. You want to push Rivers back. Did you note how many times we bombed forward in the last to Bate and Green, yet you wanted to remove the only tall target we had as well. You argue with no logic. Am I happy that we got slammed in the last no but I also stated at 3 quarter time to the people sitting with me that we would not get within 5 goals of Freo. It was an expected outcome.
-
Jaded your lack of understanding of the game is unbelievable. We lost Jamar early, then Bennell, then carried Strauss and Couch in their first games at this level for the year. We got killed on the spread because we had nothing left. We made skill errors because the simple options dried up because of lack of run.We refuse to man up because we had nothing left. You want bring to Gysberts in who is renowned for having no tank to improve our spread? Replace Bennell (small forward) and Petterd (lead up forward) with him, they dont even play the same role. Were we perfect today no but get a grip.
