The Zak Butters Thread

it all comes down to if butters wants to go where he wants to go

footscray and geelong are the early running favourites cos of their (relative) proximity to bacchus marsh

Would you really want to be that close to Bacchus Marsh?

As lovely a place as it is

How do people still not understand free agency? Port can and will match any offer for Butters. If you want him you’ll be giving up at least 3 first rounders for him, nobody’s getting him “for free”.

How do people not read full posts ? Read mine carefully before you go off and claim that i am not aware of the complexity of the situation.

Port will always say that they will match any offer - why wouldnt they? They dont want to make it easy for any club wanting to pry Butters away from the club. The reality is - as we have witnessed first hand - players usually get the outcome that they want. In this case, the Dees should have enough cap space to put a monster offer forward to Butters to have him around the next decade. Aside from Kozzy, we dont have any other marquee player to keep around, while Port have Rozee, JHF and Georgiadies that they need to have some spare change to keep around or they'll be the ones that leave.

Im not sure they have sufficient cap space to match any offer either. They may have more than others, but end of the day they may not have enough.

I did read your whole post.

I say again: Port will match any offer. Everyone is aware of this. They’ve said it many times publicly. Not in a million years are they going to let their best player go for just a compo pick.

I completely agree that he’ll get where he wants to go. But it won’t be for free. That club will have to pay up.

Nobody is getting Butters for free. Not us, not anybody else.

Port look terrible and may finish bottom 4. Compo picks might be better than pick 18 + future late first rounders if he's off to Bulldogs.

Still a lot to play out.

If things keep on going the way they are Butters will be at Melbourne next year. Port say they can match it but when it comes to the crunch they won't. They will be will be bottom 4 or 5 anyway so they will get a pick after their first pick.

Yes, a kind of ambit claim by Port to make sure the deal goes to the trade table

Who'd be happy with 1 top 6 pick (compo pick) for a player as good as Butters?

They'll be looking for a swathe of picks like the Petracca deal (3 x 1st round picks) And Petracca is 30, Butters turns 26 in September

You realize that all these teams have no picks below the compensation pick and there is no way he's going to Richmond he wants a flag

Richmond are a basket case.

Petracca didn't get a top 5 pick. I'd say a top 5 pick would be better than 3 picks in the top 15.

Tell you what @WERRIDEE - I’ll make you a bet.

If Port accept only the compo pick I’ll donate $100 to your chosen charity and will post the evidence on here.

If I win, you never post another “best 23” again.

Done. I don't know why you would want to deny demonlanders the best part of demonland?

I'd take the 3 picks in the top 15 (the equivalent of what we got for Petracca) And Port's compensation pick might go as high as #10

Remembering that a top end pick on its own could be a bust anyway. Drafting can be flawed so playing the numbers game can be a better alternative

You end up with nothing if the 1 compensation pick is a bust. A bust for Butters? No thanks (says Port)

I did a 10 year study of top 5 picks back here a number of years ago and started a thread about it

In that 10 year stretch only 14 of the 50 picks were B+ or better

Happy to give JT the 3 picks though. He seems to know what he is doing

I was thinking this too. 2 x Top 5 (worst case top 10) picks will likely fast track their rebuild.

It may not stop with the Bulldogs though (as a destination club)

Other clubs can chime in with enormous contract offers and the other clubs might have a lot more draft capital to barter with as well

Right now we're in the pre-auction phase but the offers will be flying in soon enough (behind closed doors)

Tigerz offering $16Million over 8 years

They will get a whole of a lot more for butters trading then not matching it getting say a pick 4

Richmond may not be a terrible destination, had they not burnt a handful of first round picks on duds in the 2024 draft

Not sure I’d sleep ever again knowing my club had four chances to take Murphy Reid and didn’t, and taking three other tall forwards before Shanahan

How do you see Butters, Greg? Where’s he going?

Who we targeting if not Butters?

I’ve got no idea unfortunately GawnOfTheDead, wish I knew a few in the know but I don’t! All stupid opinions are my own

And Murph was a mad Tigers fan; desperate to get to them! Not anymore. Staying in Perth

If I had to guess, I’d say we’ll go really hard at Humphrey, and are probably keeping an eye on Zane Duursma. Haven’t seen any links between us and Butters yet, it’ll probably be Dogs. All just guesses though!

In fairness the Tigers have been unlucky with Simile being injured for 18th months

Taj Hotton looks the goods but again injured a lot.

Having said that, Butters would be crazy to go to worse team and trust a rebuild with no proof that it may be successful. North and even WC

  • CASEY: Richmond

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.

  • REPORT: Richmond

It seemed as if the whole purpose of the Anzac Eve clash at the MCG between the Demons and the Tigers was building toward that single, unforgettable moment when Kozzie Pickett soared above Campbell Gray and all but fittingly etched his name onto the face of the 2026 Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes Medal.
