Full fixtures for the 2026 Smithy’s VFL season and 2026 VFLW season will be released in coming weeks.

Love it - Saturday 21 March wil be a banner footy day for me.

Catch the dees v dog at Whitten Oval (when not windy an awesome ground to watch footy at i reckon), a 20 minute drive from my place.

A saturday arvo game at Whitten Oval starting at 2:10pm is just perfect - real old school vibes

Home by 5:30.

Rustle up a quick BBQ dinner and then settle in to watch us knock off Freo in Perth, triggering a discussion about where the dockers are at.

Life doesn't get much better.

Ah the VFL fixture.

So we take extra players to Perth who won't get a run and then have a VFL bye the following week.

Such a useful competition.

Not as though it's a new occurrence

At least the games aren't on at the same time!

How about a 24 game fixture (mid season break of course ) Tasmania v the VFL. Great no byes. The team that wins the most games gets to play off in the G.F.

No need to have a brain trust to work out a fixture or perhaps this will spare a 5 year old from making difficult decisions. Beam me up Scotty , you know the rest.

There's not enough money. VFL runs at a loss based upon gate receipts. The non aligned clubs rely upon unpaid labour and the modern equivalent of chook raffles.

Would be useful if the AFL clubs came clean on what they want from a VFL competition. It was they in conjunction with the AFL who came up with this Frankenstein like model we now call the VFL.

Give me a Burra Burger please.

Some of the key features of the 2026 Smithy’s VFL season include:

  • 40 matches featuring VFL standalone clubs against each other, with all eight VFL standalone clubs playing against each other at least once. Coburg, Frankston, Southport and Williamstown will play each other twice, while Port Melbourne, Sandringham, Tasmania and Werribee will play each other twice.

  • 17 VFL/W double headers across the opening six rounds of the VFLW season.

  • Tasmania Football Club to play its first match for premiership points when it hosts Coburg at North Hobart Oval on Saturday, March 21.

  • St Kilda to mark its return to the VFL on the same day when it travels to Tom Wills Oval to take on the GWS Giants. The Saints last featured in the VFA/VFL in 2000.

  • Footscray Bulldogs to unfurl the 2025 premiership flag against Casey Demons at Mission Whitten Oval in Round 1.

  • Competition bye scheduled for the men’s and women’s State Games between the VFL and SANFL, which will be played at Glenelg’s Stratarama Stadium on Saturday, April 11 during the AFL’s Gather Round.

  • Grand Final rematch between Southport Sharks and Footscray Bulldogs at Fankhauser Reserve in Round 6.

  • Four matches on Good Friday in Round 3.

  • Four matches on ANZAC Day in Round 5.

  • Finals series to commence with Wildcard Finals on the weekend of August 22-23. The Wildcard Finals format remains unchanged, with the team that finishes seventh on the ladder to play against the team that finishes 10th, while eighth will take on ninth.

  • Smithy’s VFL Grand Final to be played the weekend of September 19-20.

some very interesting initiatives here. Especially like the double header VFL/W

Thanks @Demonland

We never seem to be scheduled vs Sandringham at TBO, just a few hundred metres from my house.

The most accessible match for me is vs St.Kilda at RSEA Mmorabbin but that is just before on the same day as MFC vs HFC at the MCG.

None of the fixtures really tempt me, it's a long way to Casey and the viewing is rubbish.

He shouted to them there:
It's a long way to bloody Casey
It's a long way to go.
It's a long way to bloody Casey
To the sweetest dees I know!
Goodbye Sandringham
Farewell Federation Square!
It's a long long way to bloody Casey
But my heart's right there.

Yep... give me Port Melbourne, Coburg even Windy Hill and Vic Park anytime. Williamstown in the sunshine is a dream. Box Hill is pleasant.

Anywhere but Casey

It's almost a separate competition with standalone clubs playing 12 matches against other standalone clubs.

Strange but I can see the logic (VFL not for this world much longer methinks)

4 of our first 6 at "home" at Casey. Just have to get on your bike a few times if you want to catch the AFL boys at the G...

9 of the 18 games at home. The only interstate matches are Sydney and Gold Coast matching up with our AFL games there.....
