AFL Draft 2025: Phantom Drafts

2025 AFL Draft - Melbourne Demons Focus

Highly recommend watching this MFC draft focus from Jess at True Footy and Dylan Alexander, some very good analysis and a pretty decent understanding of where we sit. Have around 20 mins spare, it's pretty in-depth compared to a lot of other content out there.

I can never work out how to embed the YouTube videos on here, so someone else feel free to repost the actual video.

I've counted the list vacancies for every club and the draft will go to 57. Some clubs will pass as Adelaide will pass on there last pick to pick up Ah Chee in the pre season draft.

Adelaide 3 picks 18,

Brisbane 3 picks - 5 (b), they used picks 68, 59, 51, 44,23 and 17

Carlton 4 picks - 10 (b) (they used picks 72, 67, 54, 43 and 11), 13

Collingwood 4 picks

Essendon 5 picks - 8,9, 21, 24, 25 (b) they used pick 30.

Fremantle 4 picks -20

Geelong 1 pick - 19

Gold Coast 5 picks - 3 (b)they used picks 52, 36, 29, 28 and 24, 4(b)They used pick 15 and 18

GWS 1 pick - 15

Hawthorn 3 picks - 14, 22

Melbourne 3 picks - 11,12, 31

North 1 pick - 23

Port 4 picks

Richmond 3 picks - 6,7

St.Kilda 0 picks

Sydney 3 picks - 26, 27, 28 (b) they used pick 63 and 42

West Coast 4 picks - 1,2, 16, 30

Dogs 3 picks - 17, 29

I only went to pick 31 because that's all for us.

For readability it might be easier to amend this to only reflect teams with draft selections inside the top 30. It gets a bit messy seeing clubs mentioned in there as having multiple picks etc then only one pick reflected due to the methodology.

They have pretty well gone with my picks. They also went with Cumming but I think he'll be gone by then. I'll try and piece together picks 21 to 31.

They've posted another mock 30 (their final draft) since then where they took some criticism on board and changed it to Grlj and Dovaston. Needless to say, that result would be nuts!

I'm gonna be unpopular but I'm not sold on Grlj a player that finds it hard to find the ball at under 18 level will find it even harder at AFL level.

I don't agree with you, but why would an opinion offend anyone ?

Yep watched this one through the other day! If we're able to nab Grlj I'd be over the moon.

It's worth noting that these boys rate Sharp very high and Jess is a WC supporter so he's chosen Sharp at 2. I rate Sharp but have a feeling WC will go Dursma and CDT, Grilj to Rich, Sharp slides to Essendon and Cumming slide to us..

I think there is a very real possibility Essendon go the S.A double to try and mitigate go home concerns. I can see them taking Cummings and Sharp. This would leave us with the chance to take Taylor who is the best available but perhaps not something we specifically need.

Hope you’re right Ted

Is there any chance we wouldn’t take Grij if he was available at 7 or 8?

It’s probably just my MFCSS talking but I haven’t heard him linked to us in the same way Cumming/Schubert/Dovaston has

Other than Robey he’d be my #1 target

It would be classic Essendon to take 2 mids and not develop them while the very next pick we take Taylor and he becomes a multiple times all australian star player

Sharp is noted as a contested beast...whose "athletic tools are lacking". While he sounds like a good citizen and a great extractor, given the way King wants the game played, isn't this just another Clayton Oliver 2.0. If we are looking to get speed in the midfield, how does this help? Pickett wont develop the tank to play 80-90% midfield time. Rivers is reasonably quick. I would have expected us to be targeting an outside player. Maybe I have misunderstood.

Go listen to DanDoesFooty they had a draft guy on they had WC taking Sharp at 2 but he sounds pretty impressive, said when the game is there to win that’s where he wants to be and when his team is winning comfortably he will just sit on the bench. Averaged 1.5 goals thru the carnival that was up there with the best forwards as well

Based on that video i think we split our second pick. It looks as though the talent is similar after Grijl onwards. So if we can split it we woukd get three quality players, instead of 2

11. SAM CUMMING

184cm Midfielder/Forward, North Adelaide

Drafted: MELBOURNE

We say: There is a question mark over whether Cumming gets past Essendon, with the Bombers also believed to be keen. But the Demons would be delighted if he does slip through, with rival clubs believing he is Melbourne’s No. 1 target. A fierce competitor who has been likened to former Crow Rory Sloane, Cumming has power, speed and plenty of class. Originally from Wentworth in New South Wales, he moved to Adelaide for school and served as a vice-captain of South Australia at the under-18 national championships. Cumming looks to be an ideal pick for the Demons as the club seeks to rejuvenate its midfield after the off-season departures of Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver. He would be a third high-end midfielder drafted in the past two years, following Harvey Langford (pick 6) and Xavier Lindsay (pick 11) last year.

12

LACHY-DOVASTON.8d86307.jpg

MELBOURNE

12. LACHY DOVASTON

178cm Forward, Eastern Ranges

Drafted: MELBOURNE

We say: While the Demons are all over Cumming, what they do with their second pick is a touch less clear. They have been linked to a tall and have done their work on Schubert, while Archie Ludowyke has been another name floated. But if Essendon get to Schubert first, Melbourne might change tact. The Demons have been linked to small forward Latrelle Pickett, who is a cousin of Kysaiah and a player they would love in their line-up. But it might be a bit early for that. It is not too early for Dovaston, though, who is the best small forward in the draft class. Compared to Nick Watson, he applies good pressure, works hard up the ground and has great forward craft to hit the scoreboard in different ways. Dovaston kicked 38 goals from 16 games for the Ranges — the second-most in the Coates Talent League — and took out the agility test at the draft combine. He has also been linked to other clubs including Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs, but the Dees have the chance to get in first.

CAMERON-NAIRN.9a05e20.jpg

MELBOURNE

34. CAMERON NAIRN

188cm Forward, Central District

Drafted: MELBOURNE

We say: The Demons would love if Latrelle Pickett slipped through to this pick, but that doesn’t look likely. They may still be able to add a quality forward in Nairn, though, who has drawn comparisons to Bayley Fritsch. At 188cm, Nairn measures exactly the same height as Fritsch and similarly possesses vice-like hands overhead, a big leap and an accurate boot. The South Australian recorded one of the best individual performances at the under-18 national championships with a seven-goal haul in a match against Western Australia. Along with his strong hands, he also has strong endurance to outwork opponents and finished fourth in the 2km time trial at the national draft combine.

"Melbourne might change tact". Interesting mis-use of the English language. Fits right in here on Demonland!

Be more tackful. It's not the worst malapropism going round.

although Cumming is from Mildura so wouldn't have a SA go home concern

Cumming looks so much like an Essendon player..
