AFLW: Rd 11 vs Brisbane

I donโ€™t know what has happened to Paxy Paxton this season but her disposal is shocking and nearly every kick is a turnover. Very frustrating.

Too much is left to too few consistently. We havenโ€™t really nailed our last few years of drafting, particularly our early picks. I really donโ€™t like to single out players for the wrong reasons but I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Alyssa Bannan. A high draft pick that has been in the system a while now who is a good size and blessed with elite speed goes missing far too often and needs to do much more. Very talented but picks and chooses too much for me. I personally would drop her to send a message. Canโ€™t keep relying on Zanker, Harris and Hore for your score sources. We need to find a good forward to play that small forward role to be that sniper around goal and apply forward pressure to lock it in our forward line. Comes out too easily. Not sure Pissano is the answer here either.

Bannon has lost a yard of pace. she can't burn off defenders anymore. she doesn't seem to have another weapon

Agree re Pisanno. Witherspoon is developing nicely though and i is providing some forward pressure. needs more help though

Personally i think we're exceeding expectations this year. we're missing grunt in midfield with Purcell and Beasley out. add that back in and another year or 2 of development in the youngsters and i think we're back contending.

ย

we're still in with a great shout of top 2.

We have to take care of our business next week and beat Geelong. They are not playing finals so they're just playing for pride. We should be good enough to win

Apart from that the danger is North resting players against the Hawks and dropping the game. If they beat hawks like they should then we have enough percentage over the Lions to get second and play the Lions at Casey week 1 of finals where our record is very good

Still plenty to play out and great to be involved at the pointy end of things

Agree Liv Purcell is a massive loss. Now means that Hore needs to spend more time in the midfield, she is that sniper around goal. Beasley back may help or get Mackin in there.

Whilst I like Molly O, we missed a trick not getting Zippy Fish in. She just looks a natural footballer and has it all.

The whole game turned when the umpires failed to pay a mark to Kate Hore in the forward line.

It just deflated everyone and probably would have put the game beyond reach for them, as they picked up the momentum.

Not bothered about the frees or not, but honestly blow the whistle for a ball up when a rugby scrum is around the ball.

Assuming we finish top 4 do we host the home final(s) at Casey or Princes Park?

Princes Park. This is great for us since we play really well there.

We host finals at Princes Park, where our record is also very good.

This canโ€™t be understated. This was the moment that signalled a downward turn for us. Youโ€™re spot on, Georgeโ€ฆ the entire team seemed deflated, or even defeated, by this blatant umpire error. And this is what makes me so angry; we had momentum but it was taken away at that point.

It's a credit to her effort in those 3 games over a year ago that we're so keen to get her back! Or maybe just a bit desperate!

Another player Iโ€™ve noticed at training for her impressive speed and agility is Amelia Dethridge. I donโ€™t know where sheโ€™s at in terms of getting a game but if we are a bit desperate maybe she should be considered ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

Agree again. At very worst had to be a ball up. Umpires donโ€™t have a feel for the game or game sense.

There is a massive drop off in umpiring standard from AFL to AFLW and VFL.

Massive swing in interpretation and implementation of the holding the ball rule last night from every round so far this season. Players had an eternity to get rid of it last night, I also question the legality of how Brisbane were also getting rid of the ball.

Overall I do think Brisbane were better for longer last night and was probably the right result. Their inaccuracy left the door ajar.

As much as i complain about the conditions at Casey the fact we are used to those conditions confers a big advantage

That said better for the comp to play the game at Princes.

The players themselves prefer Princes Park. In fact, theyโ€™d prefer Princes Park over Casey for any and all matches. And yes, itโ€™s better for the comp. Princes Park is a better venue in every aspect.

Rematch in 2 weeks. Lions will finish 3rd.

I honestly thought weโ€™d be a possibility of matching it with the Kangas. Now I think thatโ€™s a long shot. The players have wilted under pressure in close ones. Ok to beat teams by 30,40,50+ points but have been vulnerable in the close ones. Hmmmmm sounds familiar ๐Ÿง

Top 4 locked in. Win next week = avoid North.

Agree re Bannon.

Very surprised that Gall was left out if she was fit.

Just watched the replay. What an absolute epic battle.

We're right in the mix as long as we get the job done next week.

Probably the most physical game from Tayla Harris I've seen.

Will she gets pinged for the late bump?

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.
