Farewell Clayton Oliver

You would have preferred we tell Oliver to go to the Cats last off-season?

I think a lot of us thought he could regain his form

His mental health may have been and be a lot better if we had. He is a country lad and liked the idea of living on a farm. He asked to be traded there.

As I said I think we did him a disservice by not trading him for our own selfish PR reasons.

And this is what it has come to.

We chose to blow the relationship up, despite Clarry being invested and wanting to stay

We did this

When you not only blow things up, but also let such a blow up leak, you have no leg to stand on

GWS are happy to put in the effort we obviously no longer want to put in, while we pay for it

How to lose a trade 101

are you serious?

He blew his career up. We supported him through everything despite everything

It's simple. Be professional and do what you are paid a truck load to do.

We can continue to 'put the effort in' and finish in the bottom 6 but King and others know when it's time to move on and cut your losses

Goodwin has much culpability on his hands for his dismal handling of 2024 and 2025.

He, Roffey and Pert allowed our time on top to turn in to an unmitigated disaster.

Sleeping at the wheel, thinking success was a given after 2021.

So what does that tell you?

That we as supporters clearly dont know all the facts.

Having said that, clubs are way too precious about "bad influences" and "culture cancer" and " toxic behaviour". Its an industry of young men with lots of free time, people make mistakes and people can change. Is he an absolute unrecoverable disaster? I find that extremely hard to believe. Cause his footy is definitely not 3rd round pick material for the next 5 years.

But we will take the deal as offered. We have no choice.

But how much will that liability be in dollar terms? We may have set a limit

Forget draft picks, this is only about the money owed

Is $800k per season for 5 years the cut-off point? $600k? A Million?

It's like buying a house except GWS will be purchasing a house in dire need of renovation

The Head Coach is but one vote on the List Management committee.

Also, Goodwin had to say re Clarry what King has had to say re Trac. The head coach can't be seen to be dissing his players in public, regardless of what they acknowledge behind closed doors.

Who on our board would have had the standing to challenge both the CEO and head coach over a decision like this

Roffey? i doubt it. Brad Green? Possibly

And it's no surprise to me that Clarry gets his marching orders once Goody is out of the picture

Well if we can't strike an agreement with GWS, Oliver will only have one place to go to by the looks of it ... the MFC

And we'll have to pay him the $7Million that we owe him

I once listened to an ex soccer player in the UK talking about what his obligations were to see out his hefty contract

"Just never miss a training session or meeting and then they have to pay you"

Ethics and Integrity be damned hey.

OK we kept him for public relations reasons?

Not that we thought a club legend could turn around his life and career?

I reckon we have looked after him too well. Finally King comes in and says enough is enough

He has chosen Sydney to go - could not think of a worse place for a country lad

It's all BS just like the go home factor.

Just pure dribble they drive in the media to increase their bargaining power.

Lots of history being rewritten in this thread.

Weren't too many here saying "just get rid of him" a year ago.

We can all be very forgiving until we reach a tipping point

And his 2025 performances were way below standard. 7th in the Bluey in a year where the team was often quite dismal

So when new information comes to hand ......

Don't buy this arguement at all, watch as he has a stellar season next year and the acolytes to this destruction including Demonlanders who want him gone, start Bleating the loudest. An absolute farce and disgrace! The bottom line is he wanted to stay, and then was shattered to find the new coach unwilling.. a disgrace

A F3 for clarry and is paying zero contract i could swallow. Giving him away for peanuts and paying a big chunk is crazy and Lamb needs to be held accountable

I don tthink Tim Lamb is cut out for the brutality of trade negotiations. He is Mr Nice Guy and appears to be taken advantage of year after year.

GWS is basically waiting for us to blink. The whole nonsense around not having cap space basically is designed to make us sweat. If the reports on DeGoey to GWS are true, id pick up the phone to Collingwood and say well take DeGoey pick (15) and give you Oliver and take a 40-50% of his salary. Id say Oliver is probably in better physical condition and is younger than JDG so theyd effectively get a more fit player at about 60% of the price.

If Oliver doesn't want to go there, he better be in tip top shape for pre-season. If not, then id reach out to the AFL and start the convo around terminating/suspending contract as the Doggies did with JUH. There has to be a clause in contract around players professionalism and ability to play.

We’re the softest team in the league and Lamb is clearly seen as a mug by other teams so we’ll take this deal

Find a [censored] backbone for once

Tim Lamb is a laughing stock if this is acceptable to him. His credibility with MFC supporters and fellow list managers is in the toilet. GWS treating him like dirt. This is a pivotal moment for Guerra, King and Smith.

[censored]. You lot think Lamb alone is pushing Clarry out? There is a list management team, which includes the new coach. We want him out, it's effectively a salary dump.

Do you believe he can stay for one more season, work hard and increase his market value?

Then we let him go for a better deal?

I agree with this though. Our comms team strike again.

In part, yes. We had the Petracca drama, Viney rumoured to be going to North, a President in the hot seat, a CEO wanting to trade Oliver. The club was under siege in the media. It took the path of least resistance.

The club has known of Oliver's off-field issues for many many years. And rightly protected and cared for him but there comes a time when that wasn't the best for Oliver's welfare but no-one (except Pert) was willing to make the hard decision.

Look, it's a tough time for us Demon supporters losing our former champs

I honestly thing the club is doing the right thing now to right the ship and I'm excited about the future (pretty much)

Still one of our best despite nat being at his very top level. Saw signs of that high level in the final match of the season. Then the big boot! Strange indeed.

I did notice that one good game.

But he is on 1.3m and Chandler finishing higher than him in the BnF is a sign he is not dominating

I believe he is still a super player and typically MFC have stuffed up as always

The fact we're paying half his salary till 2030.. we may aswell fold as an organisation 🤣🤣🤣

21 minutes ago, Jjrogan said:

Cause his footy is definitely not 3rd round pick material for the next 5 years.

It's an extremely limited market and there's interest from only one party (GWS)

No other club wants to touch him and GWS and the MFC know that. There's no bidding war

The 3rd round pick is tokenism, as it's all about the money

As previously stated, we'd have our limit and GWS will have their limit in terms of who pays what

I can see a deal falling through as the cooling off period could be kicking in (for GWS) Buyer Beware and all that

If he arrives back, we'll take him in as we've no choice. Contracts are Contracts

The winds finally returned to Casey Fields for the Demons’ third home game of the VFL season, and its impact was immediate. After two opening rounds played in uncharacteristically fine conditions, the Anzac Day clash brought back the familiar gusty conditions that have been a feature of the region at this time of the year.
Forced to kick into the breeze first, the slow-starting Demons faced a tricky opening against an enthusiastic young Tigers outfit. Casey responded by turning the contest into a scramble, pressuring Richmond into errors and missed targets. The tactic proved crucial, keeping the game tight for three and a half quarters before the Demons pulled away with the autumn wind at their backs.
