I don't think Archer has to worry about fronting up for a run every day with Pickett over Christmas.

im sure there are many ways to 'read' into the the article about Byron, and there may indeed be more than one issue here.

There is a very simple one too. Riley is going to trial the kids. Byron aint no kid !!! So Im sure if Byron earns his spot then Bomber will possibly play him. I just see it as a priority thing, not necessarily a personal one.

surely that decision would be left to the new coach?

exactly, it will have nothing to do with Riley

I wouls still rather they play Pickett soon before older players such as Holland Bizzell Brown.

He is one of the few older ones who can improve - if we choose to play him next year. Otherwise why play him?

Pickett has let us down in a big way this year and probably doesn't deserve his $330,000, 200 games or another crack next year.

Give him one game then delist him at the end of the season.

If the intention is to delist him, he should not be selected again...period

After the way he has cheated on his obligations to MFC and his teammates he can rot on 199 games.

He does not deserve the good grace of getting a gift game to get to 200 games on our account.

He has done stuff all to be selected the last time.

if he is keen to play next year, and we think we are a crack to give neitz one last chance i think he should be retained, on a heavily performance based contract. and im talking we should pay him a chris johnson wage, plus large amounts per game, and we should offer a larger incentive for finals. if possible i would even consider weighting some of his performance based to how he actually performs (minutes of game time, possessions, KO's whatever the KPI's are). but if we are serious about having a crack next year, he will be around.

When does his contract end?

There's very little room for sentimentality in footy these days., however and I know other's will disagree, but if he is going to be delisted, the MFC loses very little in giving Byron the one extra game he needs to complete a very worthy milestone (providing he earns his spot) and gains a lot more in terms of respect, not only from maybe Byron and his supporters, but by the wider footy community.

Given his age, experience, and pay packet you'd hope Pickett was an automatic selection. Given his woes this season and the fact that he won't be picked this week I suggest he'll struggle to get many games as he's not part of our future.

surely that decision would be left to the new coach?

For sure. However given Pickett's struggles in the first half of the year, the likelihood of him playing a major role in the second half of the season lessening, and the fact he's out of contract, I think it's fair to say he's in serious trouble.

Maybe if he'd come back from his suspension and put in a great finish to the year he could have given himself a great crack at playing another year. His poor form vs Richmond and struggle to get back into the team indicates that scenario is very unlikely.

Thus, he doesn't have much to hang his hat on when the new Coach is appointed, whether that be Riley or someone else.

That's not exactly a ringing endorsement. I don't think Brown is likely to play much this year. Holland and Bizz play a completely different role, and one that we're less capable to fill with our younger players. That said, I see little room for Holland although with Rivers out and a very young backline I imagine Bizz will retain his spot as long as his form is decent.

I tend to agree.

I wouldn't bet my house on it just yet...

He's been named on the extended bench according to Ch.10

It'd be an interesting 2 hours if you lined up on Byron in his last game. I'm sure he'd want to go out on a high note as the perfect gentleman. But it would take a steady mind ...

Emergency IMO. We're going to say we have a youth policy and then decide not to bring in Dunn > Pickett based on an average Sandy reserves game? :|

Agree totally.

What has Byron Pickett ever done for the MFC?

Taken his paycheck and [censored] off to the pub? That would be about it.

I actually agree with you, I must have had a weak moment

I reckon Pickett will be given a couple of games to round out, and maybe proove that he's worth persevering with. Though I personally wouldn't want to see him on the list next year.

If I had to guess, I'd say round 16 (Nth Melbourne) or 17 (Port Adelaide) would be chosen for his 200th, 'for old times sake'. If we give him a run, it may as well coincide with the more personally significant games for him. Unless he's really stepped up by then, though, I don;t think he should get more than two or three games to show us his worth.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
