Who is our next captain?

Petracca is the only realistic option in the timeframe Max has remaining unless we trade someone in. In years gone by I would've said Lever but he's falling off a cliff and its starting to look like his body isn't going to hold up.

Petracca has recent history of spitting the dummy about how unprofessional we are, I'd be interested to see him put his money where is mouth is and take over the leadership. We know on a personal level is is highly professional. Will that translate to effective leadership as captain? Not sure, but in my view I don't see any other options in front of us.

I agree. After a conversation, and that all checks out, Iโ€™d be up for Trac as captain next year. Could be very good if heโ€™s all in.

Who replaces Gawn as our next captain?

The obvious picks 12 months ago were Petracca or Lever but that isn't happening.

We can't go Trengrove & Grimes again and ruin young kids careers.

Rivers hasn't come on. Sparrow is floundering.

It really has to be Kozzie but I don't think he wants that responsibility and media attention.

Am I missing anyone?

Lever

Turner is my elect, has not been tainted by the Viney, Petracca, Oliver, May, Gawn, Salem, Lever, Fritz, Spargo, โ€ฆ.the Good ole boys network.

Kick them out, with a size 13, and move on to the Disco era.

An era of disco would be fun, bring a bit of sparkle back into the old mahogany

Max was asked this question at the Max and Oliver night in Adelaide a few weeks ago.

He said Gus was to be the heir apparent.

He said there are 5 players on equal sort of footing. The one I thought he was leaning toward was Ed Langdon, as he mentioned he has good relationships across the whole playing list.

For the record Clarry said he wouldnโ€™t be any good at the speaking part of captaincy so it wasnโ€™t for him :.)

18 months ago I would have said Lever, but his body is cooked and he doesn't have the on field performance and influence like he previously had. He'll be lucky to hold his spot next year alone.

Petracca may be next in line but whether he's willing to stick with the club for a bit is another question.

As a leader, you've gotta not only be able to influence off the field but also on field performance on a week to week basis.

Having that presence in being able to influence games in big moments where teammates are inspired to follow. This is why guys like Garry Lyon, David Neitz, Nathan Jones and Max Gawn were so good at it.

Chandler and Sparrow are no where that calibre and never will be. They are far too inconsistent and rarely impact games enough on a weekly level.

One name to keep an eye on for the future is Xavier Lindsay. Highly rated at Gippsland Power for his leadership and maturity. I do know for a fact staff and players at the club have been really impressed with the way he has conducted himself on and off the field.

Quite frankly there is NO captain in waiting. Again I don't see it as a problem or priority. Fix the fd first.

Max ought to be OK for a couple more seasons and by then the picture might be clearer.

This ain't the most pressing issue at the Dees

Petracca orLever

Tracc needs to focus and stop lairising, and Lever looks like he will struggle to play a full season ever again.

I agree but hoping that Lever can get his ankle right, people forget that he had little or no pre season & problems with it during the season, heโ€™s a pro & a good leader, canโ€™t believe how people are writing him off so quickly

As for Petracca, heโ€™s talked the talk, the club really needs to work out his loyalty and love for the club. Heโ€™s a high profile star, it was this time last year heโ€™d had a life threatening injury, time for him to walk the walk. If not trade him

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFLโ€™s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.ย

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

Iโ€™ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we wonโ€™t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything youโ€™d like to ask or say below and weโ€™ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics youโ€™d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
