Want to pile on here to the sheer absurdity of the seating at the game.  They actually were forced to expand the seating area on the top deck because the tape they'd put up fell down (accidentally, I'm sure) and the next bay on started to fill up as people went over it.  Someone showed some initiative and moved the barriers back a bay, and the new bay filled up to close to capacity again.

If they can move the barriers and take down the tape in that situation at Marvel, you'd think they could have adapted and opened up more than just the bay they were forced to open. Maybe I should just be happy they didn't do the stupid thing and herd everyone back over the original line into the already packed bays.

Richmond got 19k vs the Giants late last year and their game against the Saints at Marvel barely cracked 21k. That is not propping up anything.

The reality is we're awesome supporters and Collingwood in particular can go sit neatly on a star picket.

The AFL cares about keeping Collingwood happy and successful because they know that Collingwood's support base is cottage cheese soufflé soft and if it isn't fluffed up constantly, it'll collapse. Same principle as 'needing' to keep the teams above the Barassi line 'competitive' at all times, and for that matter also why the United States became trapped into playing along with the utterly dysfunctional South Vietnamese regime.

The AFL can safely treat us with contempt precisely because we do turn up, we do buy memberships, and we are, collectively, hard-core steely-eyed [censoreds].

WE ARE THE HARDEST SUPPORTER BASE IN THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE.

Their boos mean nothing to us. We've seen what makes them cheer.

It could be argued that you were the one being overly sensitive, with your use of “ok, I’ll leave it up to you experts…”

Anyway, putting our petty argument aside (and I include myself in the petty part), yes last year was just a handful of behinds (literally) from us making finals, but to put up a display like we did on Sunday, rings all kinds of alarm bells. I can understand our young players not necessarily being up to AFL speed, but our older heads other than Chandler and Olly, showed little leadership. We were slow, disinterested, still playing up the wings and showing no dash and dare at all.. that was extremely disappointing as all of the talk was of us taking the game on, with what I thought was going to be a new game plan… instead we got the same old, same old.

Hopefully if May is back, that fills a hole in our defence… I can’t see Windsor being back due to him being on crutches at the game on Sunday; I hope I’m reading that wrong. I’m not sure that Johnson being back will improve us much, despite me liking what he has to offer in terms of sheer effort.

Fair enough 

Ive got egg on my face & rightly so.

This was the fear l had with, our schedule & lack of drawing power teams.

Now we play GC & be lucky to 15k to the game.

I really thought we turned the corner in 21 to be a legitimate football club & mix it with the big boys.

And for our coach to so quickly put the club and our fantastic skipper back under the media spotlight after the year from hell is unforgivable 

Not to mention our unchanged game plan!

Goodwin is now a poor tactical & game day coach, poor player manager & now the players aren’t playing for him

We always lose the close ones or get thrashed

We are a mid level club. Our fans outside of the hardcore are soft as butter, as shown by the membership dropoff after one less than excellent season.

Sure makes it easy for the AFL to hand out an off Broadway fixture.

The AFL are purely revenue driven. They will keep delivering prime time fixtures and crowd pulling games to the bigger clubs. How many years have we watched Essendon and Carlton being given prime time games when they were utter [censored]? They continually trot out the excuse that the number of clubs in the comp doesn't permit a fair draw and use that as a license to do whatever they want. Until they decide bring fairness into the equation this will continue. It's just reality.

Interestingly. Round 1 Geelong v Freo at Kardinia drew a crowd of 25K. That's truly pathetic and would be a real worry for the club 🙂

Our membership steadily increased over the 2010s when we were horrible. I think 2013 was the only year it went backwards.

Personally think that the style of football we play is just not something that gets people on board unless we're winning. Club needs to offer supporters hope and excitement again.

Not sure I agree with the premise of this thread.

Home v GWS where they get 8 fans and don’t play often, Norf at Marvel then Suns at the G, if we were flying we should win 2 of those or all 3 and we’d be riding high going into the Cats and we’d be drawing 40-50k against the Bombers.

The team has let us down not the AFL.

Fighting for finals?

You're talking about the two games immediately after first losing to Freo by 50, and then to the Dogs by 50, and we hadn't beaten anyone outside the bottom 4 since round 8, and the club was in open turmoil on multiple fronts.

Now, I'm an insane optimist when it comes to football - or at the very least a person who rationally chooses to not submit to doomgroaning - and while I would have been there if I lived in Melbourne, but for sensible people it was quite clear by round 20 that mid-winter night games against top-4 sides was a low percentage play for a family outing. Our season was thoroughly cooked, and the game was on TV anyway. Same as happens with other clubs, except Demons actually turn up more.

Anyway. Richmond.
