Thanks Wheelo. Are the pressure point and team pressure ratings in the latest GC post and i just can't see them or still to come?

The pressure ratings are only accessible in the Herald Sun the day after a match. I will aim to do the initial stats files post on the day of the game (except for night games) and then post the pressure ratings the following day. And here they are.

Also, I haven't worked out if/how you can embed tables with different formatting with the new version of the site.

Could someone tell me:

  • which stat shows first touch/possession at stoppage (not necessarily a clearance)

  • which stat shows first possession after the above

TIA

The AFL average for converting first possession into a clearance is 75% this season. Melbourne wins the clearance just 65% of the time (18th) they get first hands on the ball (2024: 72% - 18th)

Melbourne's opponents are at 85% - also 18th (2024: 79% - 18th)

Melbourne was 12th for both in 2021 so we weren't clean in this area even then.

Thank you. That is what I feared.

It suggests our stoppage method has two issues. Even if 1) we get first touch, which we no longer seem good at 2) we can't get it to someone on the outside.

1) seems partly because Max sadly, is no longer being able to jump well, which is not surprising given his leg and back issues in recent times. And our mids have become too reliant on him and not learnt to shark the opp ruckman whereas the opps shark Max.

2) seems because our mids just bomb it out by foot and they don't seem to handball it out much anymore. Whether it is because they panic or our method doesn't have players on the outside it is difficult to tell. Certainly opps have beaten us on the outside at stoppages for years as 12th in 2021 indicates.

I think 1) and 2) is 'the method' Goodwin is referring to that they need to fix.

In the past the quality of the players was enough to overcome deficiencies in method. That is no longer the case. I just hope coaches and players sort it out quickly.

Yes i figured that you were sourcing from the HUN intitially but may have garnered a work around in the last season or so and managed to put it in your main post but we couldn't see it due to the upgrade.

Thanks for clearing that up.

Both Teams were well under the AFL average of approx 185 through the entire match which may well infer that neither team is bringing AFL level heat on its opponent.

Another major worry for us for when we do run into teams that bring the average... or better, for much of a match.

Confirming we do not bring pressure acceptable pressure enough of the time and will probably wilt even more when we run into the better rated opposition clubs that do bring AFL average or better.

We are so far off the mark at present i reckon we might struggle against one or two of the highest rated VFL, SANFL and/or WAFL teams when they're at their very best.

We do have some solid players hopefully returning here over the coming weeks so things could improve but one wonders whether it will be anywhere near enough to turn things around substantially and see us starting to post more Ws than Ls.

Round 3, 2025 MCG - Demons vs Sons

Bare with me fellow minions as i have no idea how the new update will treat any of these tables.

Hopefully not as badly as the opening to our 2025 season (so far).

THE GOOD NEWS

Our Team Rating indicates we were only approx 2% away from our average Team Rating from 2024. Of course that needs to be tempered with the realisation that we only finished 14th.

> After a review of my ratings table from last week, i uncovered a formula error in the Team Ratings which resulted in the Top 6 Rating vs Nth being incorrect.

Our Top 6 has in fact had a major improvement over 2024's results. By roughly 21% - 22% (on average) in all three matches including against the Suns. Why is that good news you may ask. Well because the Bottom 6 is the complete opposite and is letting the team down in a massive way so far. Namely by 37% vs the Giants, 47% vs North and 40% vs the Suns.

The chances of winning pretty much any AFL match with that sort of return from your bottom 6 must be very low.

So the upside beckons on the return of higher rated experienced players which, in theory, should see us become much more competitive and improve our prospects of posting a few wins. We should temper any enthusiasm there though with the fact that the Suns' Top 6 Rating was a long way ahead of our Top 6 which may be a indication that their top end is a fair way ahead of ours at present.

THE NOT SO GOOD NEWS

Our overall Team Rating was 7% off that of the Suns. Their rating (68.6) very close to our average for 2023 (69.8). Still a fair chunk to make up here.

Worse is the fact we were also approx 9% off our 2023 rating vs the Suns. As a team you probably aren't going to make that up in one week of training or even with a few experienced quality players returning. But we might be able to chip away at it over the next 4 to 6 weeks with a bit of injury luck and a few more senior players finding their best form.

Tracc being one of those. We desperately need to get him back to somewhere near his 2024 average if we're to have a chance of bridging the gap. In his first three matches he has statistically been way off his 2024 levels of output but with signs of life in his last outing! ...

Vs the Giants -28%

Vs North -52%

Vs The Suns -17%

Not often you see Bowey heading the Player Ratings! Well done son. A huge improvement on his 2024 average.

Langford arrives with a BANG! That is an early Clarryesque performance from the young fella. Ranking in the top 5 at this early stage is a special result indeed.

Speaking of Clazz that is also not a bad effort, following on from his Number 1 BOG Rating last week against North. While a fair way off that performance, i thought he did pretty well in patches. All strength to our champ from here and fingers crossed.

*To be more precise, nearly 11% ahead

That was a better effort DD we had 7 of the top 14 players lead by Bowey ( brilliant effort), Clarry followed by Langford🦬🔥, Langdon & TMac. Their three dominators Rowell, Miller & Anderson killed us in the midfield. Can’t wait to see Langford, Windsor, Lindsay and Tholstrup in the same team. Max was excepting R1 but has really dropped off in R2-3, we are missing his dominance and marking power around the ground.

Better but only off a very big low against the Roos im afraid DZ.

As per 2024, there is so far, just too much being left to too few.

And no semblance of any method / manner in which we are trying to play the game. There's just nothing there to hold our hat on and say "i can see what they're looking to build" or "we just need to fill these two or three holes with better players coming back from injury" (or trade them in mid-season or year's end).

Also can you tell me one aspect of our game and OF the game of Aussie Rules that we look good / strong at please? I can't see it.

Maybe our season starts this week against the Cats and we'll pull off a miraculous upset. There's absolutely zero expectations from anyone so there is no external pressure at all that's for sure.

That at the end of the day is what matters. Our Top 6 vs theirs. Our reliable A-Graders (premiership players) were just nowhere. Have been nowhere.

@WheeloRatings what's curious is your tables from the first two rounds look ok

Perhaps copy those tables and cut and paste in data for new matches with plain text?

Yeah previous posts are fine, but any new tables pasted into the editor are converted to standard tables. I have tried pasting the old tables into the editor and they don't retain the original formatting.

  • xWin %: win probability based on expected scores.

  • Swing: difference between expected margin and actual margin.

  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.

  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.

  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.

  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

Round 4, 2025 TPP - Cats vs Demons

Statistically our worst team performance for the year so far. Posting an Eagles / GCS 2024 esque Team Rating of just 50.6

That's 22% lower than our Team Ranking from 2024 of 65.1

The top 6 rated players posted a marginal improvement on our 2024 average

The bottom 6 another mega fail, down 57% on 2024.

Again we made the opposition look like Premiership contenders, with the Cats posting a massive Team Rating of 74.4 (not often seen). If they kicked straight the end result might have been quite a bit worse.

Again unable to bring AFL level pressure other than quarters 2 & 3.

May continued on from his reasonable return last week topping the table.

Clarry building on his improved start to the season vs the 2024 deebacle.

Tracc at No.4 just behind big Max but still a long way off his 2024 average rating by 20%. Obviously coming from a long way back and probably fading as the game wears on.

Nice return from Disco. Something to build on maybe. Should NOT be dropped for sometime imho! Back the kid in. Not the savior but is showing something. Belief from the coach will be key here along with plenty of hard work, refining and games under the belt. Tracking as our best mobile TF (but not a Key Power Tall Forward as such ... more in the vein of a Georgiados type). Can also be swung down back or behind the ball if needed.

Another shocker from Vines unfortunately with his worst rating for the season. Not looking good for the champ. Simon would be wise to manage this one from here in conjunction with Jack and try and get him back on track. Maybe not through the middle post his managed break and reset!

We would need a minor miracle to turn this one around and at this point and look to be heading for a bottom three finish.

The stats tell you what the eye does. We're second to the ball and need to improve in all facets of the game.

Shocked to see Roo, Disco and Melk in the top 10 rated players. Not that their ratings are particularly high. Probably again reinforces how much we need to lift across the field

136 pressure points in Q4. These players do not give a [censored]. That is abysmal. Has to be close to the record Port earlier this year as the worst on record.

That is not fatigue, but a team that is lost.

Thanks DD not sure how we hung in that game for so long, we had 10 of the bottom 12 players on the ground. Fritta and Kozzie both played well but 0.6 between them is atrocious.

DD is that our lowest ever team score? The new game plan is pretty shizen, looking at the coaches box last night didn’t give me any confidence that they have a handle on our situation. They beat us in all kpi’s, they played keepies off racking racking up uncontested possessions in our forward line all night and we were powerless to stop them.

Yes i was wondering this also DZ. I'm just recharging the laptop after another big day on the hustings.

I'll take a look soon as it's done.

I've also started putting the 2025 season player and team average ratings together which i'll finish and post this evening.

Every coach does it after the game but damned if I know how it’s the most important thing for the coach to do at the end of the game. If he doesn’t know how played he should t be doing the job.

Stats that matter

💩Geelong 12.13.85 Melbourne 6.10.46

But there’s other simple stats that are worth looking into

💩Inside50s. Dees 50 Cats 49. Dees 6 goals from 50 entries. Horrible. Tells a story. Panic. Poor disposal. No target. Lazy forwards.

💩Conversion (shots per inside 50) 32.0%. Horrible. Dees are lowest in the league. Goal efficiency 12%. That stinks it up

💩Marks inside forward50. “5”. Very poor.

💩Cats marks 165. Uncontested 148. Dees let Cats sit free without any pressure.

💩Tackles in forward 50. “7”. Poor.

😀one percenters 47 much much better effort

😊clearances 32-32 dees won centre clearances 10-6

Well i started looking back and only had to go to the final round last season to see (probably) one of our lowest team ratings ever DZ.

Of course that was our match vs the Pies where we posted a lousy 45.78 Our lowest rating for 2024.

Not far behind was Rnd 21 vs the Dogs with a 48.85 A massive turn around from Rnd 1 when we toweled them up and posted a 72.4

Our other shocker for the year was vs Nth in Rnd 15 with a deeplorable 47.83

I'll stop there as i'll probably need to troll back through 2020 and/or 2019 to find our worst since putting these together (in a serious sense from 2018 onwards)

Team & Player Ratings to Rnd 4, 2025 vs H&A Season 2024

Normally wouldn't start looking at the season averages until we hit roughly round 5 or 6 to ensure the numbers and trends are somewhat more meaningful.

But after four rounds my curiosity is killing me so i'm going to cheat a little and go a week early.

Some players already have 4 games under their belt so there is a bit of a base to go on. Others have only played 2 or 3 so we need to wait a little longer before casting the eye and judging too harshly and too early.

A few have only played less than two matches and their rating isn't an average for comparative purposes and should be treated with caution. Those players are denoted with an asterisk.

The Team Rating to this point in the season, albeit very early, is tracking roughly at the same level as season 2024.

The return of Lever, McVee and to a lessor degree Mr X, can't come soon enough.

Tracc coming from a long way back is presently about 30% off where he was at in 2024.

Max also 14% off after four rounds.

Rivers 19%, JVR 14% and Jack a whopping 27% down. A fair number of key critical players that are a long way from their 2024 levels to date. And one could argue that 2024 isn't a great reference point for some either!

Thanks for your efforts DD it appears that some of our veterans are really struggling with the new game plan do you think JV is more suited to our old crash and bash contest game style. We have an ingrained contest to contest game style and now are looking for a fast transition game relying on a more skilled subset, I’m thinking the young brigade will adopt quicker than our older players. I think that we need to enjoy the happier environment and now concentrate on getting our fitness and skills up to scratch.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
