Has there been any announcement about Shane McAdam’s status on the list?

I think it’s assumed he will be out for the season. I think Achilles that require surgery are a 9-12 month return for a tendon rupture.

Gentle flush session at Gosch's this morning.

Absent: May, Pickett (All Stars) McVee, McAdam.

Rehabbing: Great to see Kentfield back (much slimmer) - see GW's comments, walking with Tholstrup, TMac (suspect just a management thing), Viney (still being cautious with that rib cartilage?), Melksham (in and out of drills with lots of straight-line running), Fritsch also in and out of drills, but that is not unusual for him. Windsor definitely has a limp, and you can see the photos.

Train-ons: Culley and Yze. Culley looks good - as he has all pre-season.

Great to see Trac and Spargo back into full training, will be interesting to see if Charles has a run on Saturday?

AMW copped a corky (from Gawny) but was running it out and in good spirits.

How does Sestan look in his backline role?

Good question. We were discussing it as we watched today. He has "footy nous" and uses the ball well in that position and was solid last Friday. Given that it may be difficult for him to secure a role as a goal-kicking "small forward" this is an interesting move - a little like the AMW move last year. Let's see how he goes at Casey - assuming they persist with him in that role....

Can I assume that we will play the entire squad on Saturday?

This is what the squad could look like

B: Lever, May, Bowey

HB: Salem, Petty, Howes

C: Sharp, Rivers, Billings

HF: Petracca, Turner, Pickett

F: Fritsch, van Rooyen, Chandler

FOLL: Gawn, Oliver, Langdon

IC: Langford, Lindsay, Sparrow, Laurie, Spargo, Jefferson, Adams, Hore, Verrall, Campbell, Fullerton, Sestan, Mentha, Woewodin, Brown, Johnson, Moniz-Wakefield

assume culley would get in maybe over a ruckman if he was the one we get

Idk but I don’t think so. I asked Goody about Shane being put on the LTI list and what that might mean for Jai or Roy. He said there’s about 20 boys they’re looking at “in the background” and that that’s not unusual since most clubs do the same. He did say they’re really impressed with Jai.

20?! Really? Would all 20 or so have been at training sessions over summer?

I like the idea. I reckon they'll rest May (maybe also Pickett?) for Saturday. I note that you have left out TMac and Viney - I agree. I heard that it may be a younger squad that is turned out, so some of the other experienced guys might also not play.

Think Culley is very UNLUCKY but happy with Henderson watch him be in frame early rounds — great finisher, reader of play!

Culley they’ll have a good look at Casey for mid-season perhaps!

That is so good that Luker is back in the fold, does he look OK? Also great that Windsor is back on the park but his infection is taking a while to clear up and I think that the Kolt will find it hard to be on the sidelines for such a long period, also very happy the Spargiepants and Tracc are both back in full training.😁👍

DZ it's great to see you using a nic name i can relate to and get.

I was beginning to think the King of England had joined in at training from GW's (& others) earlier reports.

If not us, someone else will get Culley. Very little doubt from anyone and most clubs that he’ll end up on an AFL list again one way or another.

Ox talked him up this morning on SEN WA about how dominant he’s been at training this preseason taking it up to our ‘A grade’ mids.

True judging from all the training reports on Jai Culley I thought he was a shoe in, then out of the Blue Jack pops up out of the Box.😁👍

Beautiful morning at The Paddock. Windless with a few less spectators than usual.

Well I'm not there for starters.  I'm now a long long way away.  I told Max that we'd better have a good season, I want to see him in September.

I have no idea how these things go. Goody said they’re looking at about 20 in the background and that that’s not unusual.

It seems an odd number but if we manage to steal a good prospect from under the noses of other clubs' recruiters none of our exchange will matter.

20 is actually an even number 😁

Sadly not great. He seems a bit out of place, almost as if defending isn't his natural role which it isn't. Not a natural mind of a defender.

He sort of looks like a defender that should be playing forward before even being a defender in the first place.

Pretty sure CP5 wouldn’t be up to a competitive game yet so soon after returning to full contact

Who cares about his defending, is he finding and using the ball well?

I have a different view but I’ve only seen him in match sims at Gosch’s not in match practice at Casey.

From what I’ve seen he looks very comfortable back. He reads the play well, he’s involved and his kicking and decision making is good. Others I been with have been similarly impressed. He’s a strong boy and very strong and competitive one on one. I’m not suggesting he’s pressing for senior selection, but he doesn’t look out of place.

With AMW injury it’s a real shame we now can’t add Culley via SSP. Dominated AGAIN on weekend but seems now best we can hope is mid-season draft assuming no one else steals him first.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
