An indoor hockey player from Lauriston Girls School.

The last pick of the night and a real smokey.

Apparently cos Aimee Mackin 'has decided to stay in Ireland'!

Temporary, I'd hope!

AD couldn't  be rookied cos of her Lauriston games.

AFLW Draft | No.63 | Amelia Dethridge

“Dethridge comes to the Dees with a plethora of accolades in the hockey, cross-country and swimming worlds.

“She has been named in the Victorian hockey team on 11 occasions since U12s, secured National qualifications for swimming across three years and was among the National cross-country champions in 2019 and 2020.

“The 18-year-old grew up playing football through Auskick and U8s for the East Brighton Vampires, before returning to the sport during year 10, 11 and 12 through school competitions.”

Melbourne AFLW List Manager Todd Patterson: “She's a powerful athlete and a great endurance runner.”

“She also has skills for someone who hasn't played the game, which gives us a really good foundation to work.”

I'm going to put her in the "could be anything" category. Clearly an athlete!

And has at least played some school footy.

From that photo, athletic profile and a private school background she sounds like an Eliza Mc clone.

The way the Dees play requires elite running, worth a try to snag another one wherever you can find them.

Haven’t heard about this. Are you sure?

Welcome to the Dee’s Amelia.

Was stated by the hosts of the AFL's draft stream.

So, no, not sure!😄

You unwittingly sent a bunch of W diehards into a frenzy. You’re the fox in our henhouse 😂

Our illustrious DA boss-lady read your post and immediately posted it on our W WhatsApp.

Now that we know it was said by the hosts of the draft livestream we’re thinking they meant she’s not returning from Ireland until closer to the beginning of preseason 🤷‍♀️ we hope so anyways.

Found this article, which suggests it's more a "wait and see" on Aimee's recovery (she's about 7 months post ACL), not quite so definitive as what the draft coverage suggested.

https://www.irishnews.com/sport/uncertainty-over-mackin-sisters-aflw-involvement-for-2025-IRVIYLI43BB6PHX3AMFWR35CDM/

The coverage also implied that we had an extra draft spot because of Aimee not returning. But we already had three spots available for draftees anyway. From my understanding, Aimee's list spot could only be filled with a draftee if she was delisted, which is not the case.

For both Mackins, as mentioned in the article, there's the Gaelic season to consider as well. Finals run through July, with the All-Ireland Final at the start of August, and AFLW starting the week of August 11.

Players selected: Molly O'Hehir (pick No.3), Maggie Mahony (pick No.21), Amelia Dethbridge (pick No.63)

Melbourne threw the first bid up at pick No.2, nominating Gold Coast Academy product Havana Harris, which was very quickly matched by the Suns. With their pick defaulting to No.3, the Demons selected classy West Australian Molly O'Hehir, who at 179cm can rotate through half-back and the midfield, providing plenty of height to Melbourne's diminutive engine room. Another midfield layer was added in Maggie Mahony, who's a contested workhorse and will run all day. She also has an elite hockey background. The Dees stuck to hockey when it came to their final pick (after Aimee Mackin was listed as inactive), landing Amelia Dethridge. The 18-year-old also has a background in national cross-country and swimming, and has played school footy in the past few years with Lauriston Girls' School.

Added bonus is that Amelia and Maggie are close friends, having played representative school hockey together for Victoria in the School Sports Vic team (much like how Clarry and Trac became friends). Maggie comes from Ruyton, Amelia from Lauriston.

As an old girl of St Catherine’s, I’m reserving judgment in the schooling!

  • PREVIEW: Brisbnae

They really had me fooled when I picked them with great confidence to beat the Bombers at Gather Round last week. I should have recognised that nothing is more quintessentially Melbourne than defeating the undefeated early premiership favourite one week and losing to a winless cellar dweller on its way to establishing a record losing streak the next.
