If we're any chance @ LJ, then I wouldn't think twice about adding Judd to the deal. He has currency and has shown he is a best 22 player but his time spent up the ground late last season didn't exactly inspire and we do have other players who could slide into a lockdown small defender role (probably the most common and easiest role to fill) such as Bowey, Howes, Salem at present whilst we have Kynan Brown, Taj, Sestan and who I think will be our best in Moniz-Wakefield all developing and potentially available from next season.

I'm a massive fan of Judd as a great role player and hope he stays but I wouldn't spend much time worried if he was to leave.

I should have furthered my comment to include inability to attract FA talent.

You’ll note I explicitly stated my comment wasn’t related to an individual, just restating for the avoidance of doubt and ti dispel any ambiguity.

I would imagine the club will be trying everything they can to retain Judd - given how good he has been in his first two years in the AFL side. FWIW, Woewodin also put feelers out to WA clubs given limited opportunity/setting record for most games as starting sub last year.

I hope that both of these don't eventuate and would like to think the large contingent of young WA talent will stick together.

Make of this what you will. The fact that with little time left in the year he has decided to put talks on hold seems to me like there is a distinct possibility he is gone.

How quickly they all forget that Kosi has just re-signed, one of the hottest properties in football, who had every reason to head home.

On Kossie though, I’d probably say that it is a very, very large amount of money. Do you think that has a large effect on one’s decision making process in a game where one has a short lifespan?

The same applies for others.

The interesting thing will be lesser lights, those who are still quality role players, like Judd.

Of course money helps, but you think Freo wouldn't have paid him well? how about West Coast? St Kilda? Essendon?

There are loads of clubs who could have matched if not exceeded what we are giving Kosi, but he chose to stay after every men and their dog said he's gone.

Bedford is the only lesser light we've lost who has gone on to become a good player, and he didn't leave for any reason other than wanting more game time. It's a shame we lost him, but these things happen all the time at every club.

Second round pick. West Coast are a bottom team, so the pick would be early in second round if he went there. That's best case scenario unless he is part of a package to get Jackson or a star somehow.

If you take the emotion out of it, turning a rookie lister into a second round pick is good business. Would prefer he stayed, but if he did want to leave and the above early second round pick trade eventuated, you'd say we've done well.

Wanted to highlight this bit. I don't agree it's an easy spot to fill. A good lockdown small defender is crucial these days given how much of am impact small forwards have with ball movement being quicker in the modern game.

Small lockdowns defenders are possibly the hardest position to find. They need to have pace and agility and be selfless in focusing purely on stopping their opponent. A good distributor like a Bowey or Salem or Rivers would play as a rebounding halfback and would struggle to lockdown on quality small forwards such as Kozzie, Stenglein, Higgins, Watson, Curtis etc. They'd be wasted playing lockdown small. Howes is too big, lacks the pace and agility to play on those types. Brown could potentially play that role. Taj and Sestan don't have the right attributes. It's actually a challenge to find a quality one. It's why Nev Jetta was such a great player for us. We also had Hunt and Hibberd capable of that role. I personally feel it's a clear gap in our list, especially if Mcvee leaves.

I think we'll see Viney and Trac playing more regularly forward and the midfield start to look more like Kozzy's.

And if we don't, I doubt Goody will survive next year.

JJ was always a fringe played though. And now he only gets a game because he's a tagger. You can only keep so many when you're consistently top 4, and we were when JJ was here.

As for Derksen, I agree with you.
