AFLW: Rd 10 vs Pies

Port have played 3 finals teams from 11 games

absolute farce

Pity. We were starting to really look OK in those final few games and probably would have found it liberating playing finals from eighth.

I like how we changed game plan mid-season and played more to our strengths.

I don't mind how the list looks and think we've definitely uncovered a few this year. Interesting to see if Harris can overcome injury and work as a defender next season; we're suddenly blessed with an overabundance of tall forwards: Gall, Campbell, Zanker and Bannan (encouragingly playing more robust footy this season).

Also interesting to see what we go for in the draft. An out-and-out midfielder would be lovely.

Very proud of our team. We would have given things a real shake if we'd snuck in.

Amazing transformation mid season

I believe underwood has a list of football commentating cliches that she inserts every game....regardless of the situation. Ticks them off as she goes along and inserts them whenever, regardless whether they are  appropriate.

"She's playing her career of her final game"

She is woeful

Only 10 months until our next game

Or will the AFL start taking women’s football seriously?

Did the Blues tank that one? Did they fear an in-form Dees?

We'll know soon enough.

It is going to be interesting to see what they have planned for Tayla Harris next year. We have Zanker, Gall and Campbell who are all tall forwards. Both Gall and Campbell were looking increasingly at home towards the end of this season. Gall, in particular has pretty sticky hands and an accurate shot at goal.

Add into that the 185cm Jacinta Hose who the club had so much faith in they drafted her at pick 24 last year even though she was never going to play this year. She is apparently incredibly athletic with a very high ceiling. We won’t be short with talls.

Hawks have played 8 teams out of finals from 11 games

Demons have played finals 7 teams

AFL should have gone with 14 teams and 14 rounds until that was stable then increased teams and rounds together

Hawthorns draw in the AFLW means they are likely to win the $1 million dollar McClelland Trophy.

If I was Brisbane I’d be absolutely furious about that. It’s a joke.

Not defending Hawthorn in any way, but Brisbane, the defending champion, played two of the top eight this year.

17 games or stop pretending the AFL is serious about women's football.

No, you’re totally right. I saw Brisbane’s draw this morning on the AFL website and it was ridiculously easy.

Our girls got absolutely punished by the draw, and in such a short season it definitely cost them a finals spot.

"Compressed Fixture" shows how serious the AFL are.

Imagine the outrage if they fixtured the men's season that way.

Naaaah.

They take it as seriously as they do looking after fans of the game and building grass roots footy clubs.

I'd try and keep the same team for next year considering how many players we lost this season. I'd hold on to Harris she could be a real weapon at CHB next year. I think Colvin can play for 1 more year. I think Paxman has to retire. Watt has already retired and Madigan has been delisted. My best team for next year would be:

B: Colvin, Gillard

HB: Chaplin, Harris, Goldrick

C: B.Mackin, Purcell, McNamara

HF: Hore, Campbell, Zanker

F: Bannan, Gall

FOLL: Pearce, Hanks, Heath

IC: Fitzsimon, Lampard, Mithen, Pisano, Wotherspoon

EMERG: D.Taylor, A.Mackin, Beasley

I’d have A. Mackin in the team before Mithen. I’ve always liked Lilly but think the game may have passed her by. To be honest I’m bit concerned she has two years left on her contract. I think Aimee will be a significant addition for us. I wonder if they have any other Irish girls on the radar?? How do they get drafted?
Apparently they have high hopes for the athletic 185cm Jacinta Hose - she may make round 1 team and you’d think pick 10 in this years draft would be close.
I’m really looking forward to next year. Think we’ll do well

I don't really want Mithen in also just being a bit conservative with A.Mackin considering she's done her knee. Hope we can trade Mithen TBH.

I'm thinking the same 'Robbie', Lil has been great for the club and really important around the group.

...but she hasn't had a good season and has struggled a bit at times before that.

With a lot more athletically gifted female footballers who have been well trained before they come into the system, it's going to make it harder for some of the older players. Particularly those who don't have stand out attributes.

I think Lampy is another who has struggled.

The game and talent level is improving quickly and some will get left behind.

Mick is going to have to make some very hard calls.

Interesting times ahead.

Would have been interesting to see what we could have done.

Anyway hopefully next season we have less injuries.

But it was enjoyable watching essendon lose last night.

Round 7 is here, with the ANZAC commemoration games taking centre stage. Who are you tipping this week, and which results would be most favourable for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

Who would have imagined, when the season kicked off early last month, that Melbourne would emerge from the opening six weeks with wins over both Queensland powerhouses? At the time, Gold Coast and Brisbane were the competition’s early pace-setters, the flavours of the month, and the prospect of the Demons toppling both within the course of a fortnight seemed remote. Yet here they are, banking those scalps alongside home victories over two traditional Victorian rivals and building a quietly impressive resume.

From the outset, the Casey Demons lacked any spring in their steps. They were out-hustled and out-bustled and finally outplayed by the Brisbane Lions by 38 points on their home turf in perfect conditions at Casey Fields.
