Robbie Flower - 10 years

Featured Replies

The greatest Melbourne player I have seen.  My boyhood hero and the reason I became a Melbourne supporter as a young boy in the late 70's. As  a team, we were a laughing stock, but we always had the great Rob Flower.

That one crept up didn't it!

Still remember Mark Fine almost in tears when he announced it on his show.

I didn't get to see enough of Robbie play and I really wish I did.

Still hoping the MCC considers putting up a bronze statue of Robbie Flower at the MCG.

They have Ron Barassi, Norm Smith and Jimmy Stynes.

Why not Robbie Flower too?

Yep tragic at the time and still reasonates with me. As we all know champion player, but more importantly sensational human being! So happy that I was considered a friend of his and his warmth, wit, and conversations still stay with me. I WILL raise up a Glug Glug in memory and fortune that I had the privelege to know him well.

Football's poet.

As I've posted on here numerous times, I will go to my grave arguing that the goal against Richmond at the 1.50 minute mark of this tribute video is up there with the very best of all time.

He's out of position in a marking contest in the centre of the ground, effects the spoil and prevents a certain Tigers mark, keeps his feet and is first to the ball, sharks it over an opponent, streams through CHF and dobs it from outside 50m.

As Bobby Skilton says in the commentary, it's football at its very best.

Hard to believe that the boy who wore spectacles in games as a 16yo and then worked at Thorold Merrett sports store in the city has been gone for 10 years now.

He just was poetry out on his wing and I still think he should have made the Team of last Century on a wing with Doug Hawkins his only real rival - Keith Greig won two Brownlow's but was never as good.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
