Richmond are applying more pressure than any of our losses and we would’ve EASILY beaten North/Dons if we played like this.

We’re playing well and so are they

Do they look to you like a couple of top 6 teams?

Both are bog ordinary, the least bad team wins tonight.

Doesn’t take away from my point.

Richmond’s pressure is really high. If Freo pressured us like this, we would have lost.

They are causing us to revert to bad habits (long dump kicks) because of it.

Does this team need a sports psychologist?

Mids getting smashed. We scored 5.2 (from memory) for clearances against Freo.

This is genuinely not a gloat, but we smashed them in that qtr for clearances. Stopped them scoring and scored 6 to 1. Our pressure went through the roof and theirs dropped.

It’s just a good game!

Really?

Yes really. First few weeks I saw lots of zone defense being cut up and allowing Geelong uncontested marks all game.

Now I'm seeing increasing defensive pressure and utilising better disposers for inside 50 entries but still I am unclear what the major game plan change is.

Our 2021 side had intense defensive pressure and utilised good kicks for inside 50 entries.

Did you see our first game against GWS?

I did - but choosing the corridor rather than skirting around the outside to enter 50 doesn't seem like a profound change and didn't explain the zone defense and allowance of uncontested marks in other games.

My point is what we are trying to do was clearly evident in Rounds 1, 6 and 7.

No one thinks what we delivered for the majority of rounds 2, 3, 4 and 5 were acceptable or what the coacheswant to happen.

Ok so I went back and examined those games and the only major tweaks I could see was an increase to our uncontested possession game and a zone defense set up.

The rest - always playing on, blocking the corridors using max to intercept, pressing into forward 50 is the same as we have done for years.

Looks like they are trying to emulate more of Contemporary Geelong style of play.

If the coach didn't want the players to zone defense in the games we lost why did the players do it?

I think personally the difference isn't actually game style so much as having good field kickers like Koz and Spargo back and reasonable competitive forwards.

The major difference between Rounds 1, 6 and 7 as opposed to Rounds 2-5, is pressure. Look at the pressure ratings in those games. We didn't bring it and we didn't win contest, which is also a function of pressure.

Also, not really sure what you mean by always playing on being something we've done for years. Statistically, we're playing on faster and moving the ball quicker than we have.

We also generally lose inside 50s or are square with the opposition. That's not what we've done for years. It's what we started in the first half of last year.

The trend for the entire Goody era has been high inside 50 differentials, until 2024 and 2025. There's a clear shift there.

As for our handball game, it's far more aggressive than before, but we did try a bit of this during 2022.

But we're also using totally different angles from back to front than 2021-2023 and even 2024. So it's not just uncontested play at the back.

I’m curious on everyone’s thought, have we turned a corner or are we still going to struggle significantly this year?

I guess either direction changes Goodwin’s future, whether it be short or long term.

The Richmond game shows we definitely have not turned the corner. We still have a lot of problems especially when teams pressure us.

Very pleased, won two in succession, about to make it three.

Look.. that was my feeling too but I’m not sure if I’m being too harsh. It wasn’t all bad but yeh it also wasn’t anywhere close to the week prior. Why isn’t that sustainable? The top teams do it almost every week.

If we miss finals for a second year in a row then I don't know how the club justifies Goodwin staying on next year.

Especially with the crew that he has, they should never miss finals with this team.

Top Teams do it every week

We do it sporadically for 1 or 2 Quarters and we do it very well, but it is not consistent enough

Goodwin is still under the spotlight 100%

His contract guarantees him to the middle of next season, it’s really that simple.

Because a coach has never been sacked with a year to run on their contract before.

Who? The club? They publicly set finals as the minimum expectation this year.

We'd have to pay him out 100% of his contract and keep that amount in the soft cap making it very unlikely we would sack him this year.
