I’m amazed that some of these State Combine players weren’t in the National combine list of 65.  Especially Zak Johnson and Kade Herbert, who are strong ball winners with good skills and are mids who kick goals.  I’d rate them in the 30-35 range.

FIRST INTAKE 2024 STATE COMBINE LIST
Zane Cochrane (Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro) ️ 50-55
Sam Davidson (Richmond VFL/Vic Metro)️ 45-50
Lucca Grego (Western Jets/Vic Metro)️50-56
Kade Herbert (Woodville-West Torrens/SA)️30-35
Damon Hollow (Calder Cannons/Vic Metro)️35-40
Zak Johnson (Northern Knights/Vic Metro)️30-35
Nash King (Calder Cannons/Vic Metro)️35-40
Ricky Mentha (Gippsland Power/NT)

Mentha is an interesting one. I think the Dees would like him as a NGA cat B rookie. Definitely has talent.  I think he’s shown good form since moves to half back to create and use his skills similar to a Shaun Burgoyne type half back.

Also thought Patrick Retschko️ and Bailey Mckenzie️ would be there, at least on state combine  listing. Retschko. Strong mid/wing who resembles Trac in style and disposal.  Had some excellent games this year even against top 10 mids.  McKenzie.  Super talented forward who can dominate defenders with his marking and goalkicking.

Updated state combine list.  As I thought, Bailey Mackenzie, Patrick Retschko and Keighton Matofai-Forbes all added.  Think they are all quality youngsters who should be drafted.

Callum Twomey reports that the 2024 Draft Combine starts today with a list of 67 top prospects but there’s a fair list of talent who won't be testing including Levi Ashcroft (shoulder), Sam Lalor (hamstring), Sid Draper (back) and Murphy Reid (ankle), Xavier Lindsay (knee), Cooper Hynes (ankle), Luke Trainor (hip) and Isaac Kako (ankle).

The 2km time trial will be run today at Collingwood HQ. A skills session will also take place tomorrow at the AIA Centre before athletic testing – such as agility, sprints and jumps – take place at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Sunday.

A bit of an appendix to an article on the AFL site

Blues lift offer as Houston race heats up, Darling switch close, five deals to unlock key trades

TALLS IMPRESS IN COMBINE TESTING

NORTHERN Knights tall forward Gabriel Stumpf caught the eye of scouts on Sunday at the Telstra AFL Draft Combine, recording the equal fifth quickest 20-metre sprint in testing history.

The 196cm prospect proved his athleticism by winning the event with a 2.81 second run. He also won the vertical jumps test with a leap of 76cm and was fifth in the running jump (left hand) test.

Gold Coast Academy product Leo Lombardo once again showed his powerful attributes by finishing second in the sprint (2.85 seconds) as well as blitzing the agility test, completing it in 7.812 seconds. That placed the ready-to-go prospect in the sixth best agility time in Combine history.

Rhys Unwin (2.91 seconds), Jasper Alger(2.93) and Malakai Champion (2.94) were also among the quickest in the sprint, while likely top-five pick, midfielder Finn O'Sullivan, won the running jump (left hand) test with a leap of 93cm and was second in the right hand jump at 92cm. O'Sullivan was also eighth in the agility test (8.14 seconds).

He was beaten in the running jump (right hand) test by Gippsland Power's Alix Tauru, who jumped at 94cm. It marked the end of an impressive Combine for Tauru, who has pushed right into the mix as a top-10 pick with his second half of the season.

Tauru, nicknamed the 'Flying Viking' for his Swedish heritage, was also in the top 10 for the running jump (left hand) and completed the 20-metre sprint in 3.00 seconds.”

He has huge upside, very good inside mid and elite endurance. Courage can not be questioned and played key position for most of his junior career at community and PSA level.

Kicking is his weakness but certainly worth a look for any club with a late pick in the ND or even as a rookie. He’s an absolute beast was BOG in the WAFL colts GF right up until the last 15 minutes.

Interesting Stumpf wins the standing vert but the running vertical he isn't top 10.

I don't have the stats to back it up but i recall weid being similar. Great vertical leap from stand still with a high reach and i thought process was he would be able to break defensive zones with that as an assett because instead of leading he could park himself in space in a zone and we'd just pop it up to him

Thanks @Pennant St Dee Twomey must be looking through the combine results in more detail too !!!

He’ll also be starting to talk to clubs and managers now, figuring out which clubs have shown interest in players whose interviewed who and then do the comparisons with the draft order

2024 Player Reviews: #8 Jake Lever

The Demon’s key defender and backline leader had his share of injuries and niggles throughout the season which prevented him from performing at his peak.  Date of Birth: 5 March 1996 Height: 195cm Games MFC 2024: 18 Career Total: 178 Goals MFC 2024: 1 Career Total: 5

2024 Player Reviews: #13 Clayton Oliver

Lack of preparation after a problematic preseason prevented Oliver from reaching the high standards set before last year’s hamstring woes. He carried injury right through the back half of the season and was controversially involved in a potential move during the trade period that was ultimately shut down by the club. BLOODY BLUES by Meggs

The conclusion to Narrm’s home and away season was the inevitable let down by the bloody Blues  who meekly capitulated to the Bombers.   The 2024 season fixture handicapped the Demons chances from the get-go with Port Adelaide, Brisbane and Essendon advantaged with enough gimme games to ensure a tough road to the finals, especially after a slew of early season injuries to star players cost wins and percentage.     As we strode confidently through the gates of Prin

2024 Player Reviews: #5 Christian Petracca

Melbourne’s most important player who dominated the first half of the season until his untimely injury in the Kings Birthday clash put an end to his season. At the time, he was on his way to many personal honours and the club in strong finals contention. When the season did end for Melbourne and Petracca was slowly recovering, he was engulfed in controversy about a possible move of clubs amid claims about his treatment by the club in the immediate aftermath of his injury. Strong marking youngster who plays forward and relief ruck, continued to make significant strides forward in his career path. The Demons have high hopes for van Rooyen as he stakes his claim to become an elite attacking forward. LIVE AND LET DIE by Meggs

The Demons’ impressive late season charge to finals will most likely come unstuck this Saturday evening when the Bombers blow up the also-ran Blues in the Ikon Park double-header.   To mangle McCartney, what does it matter to ya? To have any chance to play next week Narrm has got a job to do and needs to do it well.  We’ve got to give the Pie sheilas hell, say live and let die! It’s Indigenous Round for this game and the chance to celebrate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres

It remains to be seen whether Simon Goodwin will persevere with him in attack or return him to the backline where he was an important cog in the club’s 2021 premiership success.

After a bright start to the season, playing mostly in defence, Howes seemed to lose his way in midseason but fought back with some good performances at Casey and finished the year back at AFL level.
