Sorry if this has already been asked. 
 

Pregame there was an interview on SEN with Troy Chaplin and he talked about us wanting to get back to our brand and play more forward half footy , which we did for patches I thought.

It’s sounds like from his interview we overcorrected at the start of the season with trying to play back half footy.

But where is the balance we are wanting to achieve ? is it to break even in inside 50’s and still look to punish on turnovers and intercepts or are we still wanting to convincingly win inside 50 and time in forward half ?

    Gents, happy Monday!

    do you think our poor first half was just a byproduct of the bye? Rich were just as bad and we managed to turn it around after half time.

    Our fwd line, i wrote last week about Petty not being a Fwd but having to play the role due to lack of options.  Disco was great but we shouldn't read to much into it as very similar to Petty's good performances it was a very weak opponent and being a bit of a surprise selection Richmond wouldn't have put a lot of time into that match up.

    McAdam looks like he is gaining fitness and i think Goody said he still need a full game in the VFL which i think is a good idea, but is he the answer?  i did not like us getting him as he is lazy and has had attitude problems in the past, hoping the change fixes all that and the early injuries this year were just due to him actually putting in the work in pre-season.

    We still have some good players to come in: Bowie, Salem, Melksham, Hunter and McAdam 3 of them at least are in our best side and we are sitting 5 & 2, good start to the year now the footy starts to slow down in the colder/wetter period and having a healthy list is huge! Go Dees

    On field leadership discussion.
    We are blessed having May and Lever to organise the backs.
    I assume Viney, Trac and Max provide leadership for the mids.

    However we don’t have a ready made leader to organise the forwards which I think is significant so there is a tendency for them to act more as individuals than a cohesive forward team.

    Your thoughts? Solutions? I see Melksham possibly taking that role but that’s probably  not a long term solution.

    Jeremy Cameron is an outstanding player in outstanding form, and he plays a unique role for the Cats.  IMO, if we can limit his influence, it will take us a long way to beating the them.  I’d love to hear the panel’s views on how we might go about this.

    Binman said that "no NRL coach would play a player who's left". Complete garbage. And I think the attitude cost us last year

     

    NRL players have no restriction on signing contracts after the current one or time of season. Biggest examples I have:

    Panthers Jarome Luai has signed for a truck load of money to play for the wests tigers next year and is still playing like a star for the three peat panthers.

    James Fisher-harris just signed last week from the Panthers to the warriors for the start of next year and played this week for the Panthers and played well.

    Joseph Sualii plays for the Roosters and has signed to play rugby union next year and is still playing for the Roosters.

     

    This idea of "all in or bust" is a luxury AFL clubs have because they don't have to compete with other codes or comps. NRL players can play in the UK for decent cash or even switch codes to play in France, Japan, South Africa etc. that's why NRL players have a lot more freedom and why there is no draft in NRL or any soccer league anywhere.

    While I think it's admirable to only play players who are "All in". It's absolutely naive to think players can't play well if they are leaving next year. Happens all the time in NRL. Premier league soccer players are often told before they leave that they don't fit and will leave at the end of the season and are called on when needed.

    IMO, we cost ourselves a final last year by not playing Brodie Grundy. He still would have played well. He still will have pride in himself and the Guernsey, even if he's leaving.

    Maybe I was unclear, but I meant to say exactly what you are saying - NRL coaches DO play players that have flagged they are leaving, even players who as you note have signed contracts with other clubs.

    The AFL is not there culturaly. Personally I like that it isn't, but i take your point about professional athletes being professional.

    To be clear, i have no idea why goody didn't pick Grundy come finals. I agree, I think we should have picked him too.

    I'm basing my opinion on how fundamental buy in to team and connection is to goody's coaching philosophy.

    But I'm looking from outside and obviously don't know what goody and the club's thinking was or what info they had. 

    And I'd acknowledge it's unfair to suggest Grundy wasn't all in, or wouldn't have tried his guts out if picked.

    But I still maintain that if petty wasn't fully invested goody wouldn't pick him.

    Would like if you interrupted a bit less and I disagree with some of your opinions. But because you explain how you get there, I really appreciate your perspective as it gives me a much greater understanding of the game.

    I grew up watching NRL but have lived in Victoria for too long and have converted, so these discussions really help me get an understanding of what to look for when watching AFL.

    For all my gripes with you and the pod. You guys are a lot more pleasant and interesting than almost any other sport content and I greatly appreciate it. Hell

      Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

      The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day.       It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
