No Stats for Umps for Brownlow Voting

They need access to a footy record, so they can see that there are players out there other than midfielders!

The midfielder bias in the Brownlow is beyond concerning and its time for a change.

No. Nick Daicos would get 60 votes if only stats mattered.

They can't get the decisions on the field right, the job should be with an independant group off the field .

No such group exists!

Its not just a Brownlow bias... it permeates every media and 'expert' analysis. It is the way of 'modern' society!

The Brownlow is unique in that it is voted on only by the umpires after the game and no outside influences.

Doesnt need to be perfect.

Surprisingly they do pick a good winner most years and screw up a few as well like last year.

Leave the Brownlow alone the controversy adds to the flavour.

I agree they shouldn't have stats.

I do think that the umpires should relieve some training regarding the value of roles other than midfielders, and how to notice their performance, outside mass possessions.

It might not change the winners but it might increase the votes to other positions and make things a bit more interesting.

The AFL Coaches Award is mostly won by midfielders, too. Maybe we need to accept that the midfielders are the most important players in the way the game is played today. Here's the list of winners. Interestingly, some non-midfielders won in its early years (Warren Treadrea and Barry Hall in 2004 and 2005).

Supporters watching from the stands with no other job to do don't understand some roles so I can't see the umpires being able to observe this and still struggle to do the job they are mainly paid to do.

I like the idea of them casting votes before sighting stats and then getting the opportunity to review/amend their votes in light of the stats.

Helps avoid stats-bias in their instinctive decision but also allows them to correct any howlers that perhaps they got wrong because their mind was elsewhere in the game (ie officiating it).

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
