Garner is probably the toughest shut down job in the AFLW.  Big bodied mid with the ability to get a lot of the ball and use it about as well as anyone.  Very hard to stop.  Curbing her influence to some degree should be one of our priorities, and Heath probably deserves first crack, but I suspect Stinear might not go that way.  He often seems to like to back our midfield against the opposition's, I think banking that our greater depth of mids will eventually overwhelm theirs, even if they have a couple that are more dominant (Marinoff and Hatchard at the Crows, for example).  Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  Garner and Ash Riddell get a LOT of the ball, more than any of our mids, but hopefully weight of numbers - Hanks, Purcell, West, Paxy, Mithen, MacNamara, Hore, Mackin B. - will win out in the end.

Then again Stinear might go with one of his other tactics - let the match unfold and then move Shelley Heath onto who ever is doing the most damage at quarter or half time.  She usually gets the job done. 🙂

Adelaide premiership defender Najwa Allen has been suspended for three matches.

In a ten game season 3 matches is the equivalent of 7 or 8 in the AFL. Blimey, that's tough.

Good for us though

I can't say there's much sympathy for her from me.  Play stupid games, get stupid prizes.  Do that in the men's comp, the penalty would have been far more severe.

It’s the longest suspension in the comp’s history. As Kat @Katrina Dee Fan said, no sympathy for her.

Just on Shelley, our pint-sized #30 is only 160cm and lucky to weigh 50k dripping wet, which can make her appear unimposing. But she’s a black belt taekwondo champion. Such an accomplished person and she’s only 23yo. ❤️💙

I think people underestimate her because of her small size, and the fact she has the face of a 12 year old.  She's a sweety, but man, she's as tough as nails!

She's a ripper...

My comment re her and Garner is not meant as a put down, I just think Goldie might be the better match on pure defensive terms. Shelley might get the job and it wouldn't surprise me, she will be a real pain in the a... for Garner and may hurt more going the other way.

Oh, I didn’t see your comment as a put-down at all. I only learned of her taekwondo achievements recently and it was at the forefront of my mind. I agree that my girl Goldie will likely get the job and will likely kill it. 🤜🏼 Either of these two are more than capable.

I remember during the first 2022 season there was a time, due to COVID concerns, the players were instructed not to come into physical contact with the fans by the fence at the end of games, not to cross the boundary line and just to interact with the fans at that distance.  At one game some fans were calling to Tayla to come over and sign some stuff, but she explained she wasn't allowed to, and glancing at the security guard beside her added, "Imagine if I crossed the line and I was tackled to the ground by the security, how would that be!" 🤣  Meanwhile Shelley Heath ran up to the line, looked down, lined her toes up on it with great care and then stood to attention like a 12 year old at school assembly. 🤣

As I've said many times to others, I find it hard to praise Heath enough.  She's fantastic.  One of my very favourites in a team of favourites.

I didn't see it as a put down, either.  I think it was a fair enough comment. It's a good point about Goldy, and I think you could be right, but man, I love Heater!!

Love it. 100% agree.

One of the things i've loved about the AFLW is that in a short period of time there are already a handful of players who are right up there with my all time favorite dees players - male or female.

Shelley (who doesn't need a Australian style nick name  ie with the compulsory y at the end of the name), Westy, Paxy and Hanksy are all all time favorites of mine (with Goldy not far off being added!). .

Her nickname is Heater, though :)

Good nickname in an ironic way given her ability to put the cooler on oppo players.

But she'll always be Shelly to me!

Garner will be too smart for Goldie. Heath is the one for the job, as mentioned she is strong

I'm spewing i have to miss seeing this game live.

I just realized it is at Ikon park and 100% would be going if it were not for the fact i'm seeing Nile Rogers and Chaka Khan at the bowl on Saturday night.

I love that this thread just became a Heath fanclub meeting. Should happen every week!

Underrated GF moment:

On the Garner tagging question, I reckon we go Heath on Riddell. We could put a lot of energy into Garner with not much effect. It's a tricky one.

I'm off to McCartney...

I've seen Nile before and he's great but when I found out Chaka was on the same night as the Beatle I did a Terry Wallace.

Enjoy!

Looking forward to the replay of the game, hopefully with the right result..

For those unaware, apparently (according to The W Podcast with Sam Lane) the average attendance for this season could reach the metric the AFL has required to unlock an extra game next year, so 12 H&A instead of 11. Some very good attendances in the last few rounds are needed though. The AFL has kept this quiet, but it's all detailed in the new CBA. Currently I think the average is about on par with last season, which is impressive given there were definitely some double headers that bolstered those figures and none this season.

Anyway, we all like to whinge about the short season, so here's a chance to do something about it by getting along to games and get whoever to tag along. I'd also imagine that strong crowds at Ikon will beget more Dees home games there...

Sounds good. Strangely enough, I get more excited about going to Prinny Park (Ikon, shmikon!) than Casey Fields.

Shelley heath is one of my favourites but she just bounced off the crows mids. A bigger body is needed to compete with garner and riddell.

KEV MARTIN'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS They were going hard at each other. The sims were in two 15 minute blocks. The second block finished a few minutes early, they gathered and had another 7 minutes at it. I think they were asked to compete, as they would play against an opposition. There was plenty of niggle, between some of them. At the end o

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
