Rising Star Drought at the Dees

We’ve done ok over the journey.

Bit of an indictment on Gold Coast's recruiting. 12 years of concessions, high draft picks and zone access and all they can produce over the journey are 21 nominees

Fitzroy are on this list so it goes back to at least 1995. if you listed it as average no of Rising Stars per year, Gold Coast and GWS would be at the top.

made clear who "they" were by changing it to "Gold Coast"

McVee and JVR (if we ever play him) would be our most likely in 2023? I'd be disappointed if we went through another year w/o a single nomination because they're one of the indicators of future success.

It’s fine JVR will debut this week and kick 10 and go on to win the rising star, the Coleman and a flag.

Probably win the brownlow as well if he does that

And you'd have to have a sneaky 20 on him for the Norm following that year 😁

2019: Jackson, Pickett, Rivers

2020 Bowey LaurieRosman

2021:
JVR - probably debuts this week.
Howes - has the talent to put a run of good form together.
Woey - showed a bit in preseason
McVee - a genuine nomination chance
AMW - debut not entirely out of the question.

Without a lot of good picks I like this draft class. It might be 0 from 5 in rising star noms any time soon but all could be part of the side from next year or the year after.

2022: 4 developmental talls and Sestan

We only took the 3 picks in 19 and 20 as list sizes shrunk, with no rookies. Then we’ve had both a good team and a pretty young team for a contender over the last 2 years. It’s time for Laurie and the second year kids to start pushing for games and they are.

Drafting a pair of key forwards was an investment in the future more than present too.

Not fussed, we produced a rising star award winner 2 years ago so must have been doing something right.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.

The Demons are back at the MCG for the second week in a row. They face the Suns off a 15 day break without their prized recruit and former Demon champion Christian Petracca. This will be a massive test for the Demons who will be facing a genuine Premiership contender. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Carlton

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
