I think the AFL have snookered themselves.

To keep the season going they rescheduled games but also mixed and matched teams that weren't originally scheduled to play each other.  Somewhere in those mixes and matches they have miscalculated the number of games.

The result (according to my summary of the season) all teams will have played 10 games except the Bulldogs who will play 9.

Can't see a way of fixing this that will be fair to all teams.  The teams they haven't played are Lions, North, Saints and Carlton.  It wouldn't be fair to the first two who will be in finals to play another game for no points.  And it wouldn't be fair to teams in the finals for them to play Saints or Carlton for whom it will be an exhibition match and virtually gift the bulldogs 4 pts.

The best thing that can happen is that after round 9 the Bulldogs are well and truly out of contention for finals or cannot progress higher up the ladder if in finals, so the 10th game doesn't matter and it is forfeited.

I assume someone at the Bulldogs has alerted the AFL to this rather glaring anomaly.

One of the other Clubs  must have played only 9 games.

There are 14 teams so no one has had really had a real bye just evolved out of draw changes ie cancellations.

Whether Bulldogs play a top or bottom side  in R10 it should b obvious that one of the Clubs are short snd have to play the Bulldogs.
I haven't scouted  the draw but the AFL can't just say no to 9 games for the Bullies.
I hope they beat the Pies and make the top6 as they will offer a more competitive score vs the top teams than C'wood  who are injury and form riddled this season.

Yep, I hadn't caught up with the Round 10 release. From memory, I'd heard they were going to keep the last round unfixtured for flexibility.

I'm just interested because it's a quirk in the fixture that we've never played Geelong in four seasons. No big deal.

But we make up for it in the AFL DIO by being scheduled at GHMBA Stadium each and every year!!
Actually I also think Geelong and Saints  seem to be getting far too many night games for their watch ability.

Could it be a sneaky Gil ( Saints) and ex Footy Boss Steve Hocking ( Cats ) having an influence.?

Just had another look at the rest of the fixture.  It seems the other club that will be on 9 games is Freo but they have already played Bulldogs so there is still a problem...

Maybe the fairest thing to do in terms of both teams having skin in the game is they play each other again in round 10 as @Whispering_Jacksuggested.  That way both teams are playing for premiership points.

Oh well, I guess we will know soon enough when the round 10 fixture is announced.

Meggs had a squizz this morning.  According to the fixture, after tonight's Round 5 catch up game Giants v Saints @Blacktown there needs to be one more game scheduled.  That is, Dockers v Bulldogs.  Once that's announced, all teams will then have their scheduled 10 games.

But they have played once before so I guess they have to play in Perth this time. Bad luck Bullies but it's the only answer for the AFLW

Expecting the AFL to remedy this by announcing a change to Round 10 fixture...

Ah, ha!  Yes, that is the answer:  to reshuffle all/most of the round 10 games so Bulldogs and Freo don't play each other again and instead play a team they aren't playing.

Good pick up, 'Meggs'.

If my reckoning is correct, the teams they are not playing and (who that team is scheduled to play in round 10):

Freo:

  • Brisbane (Richmond)
  • Coll (GCS)
  • Geel (GWS)
  • Saints (Adel)

Bulldogs:

  • Brisbane (Richmond)
  • Carlton (Melbourne)
  • North (WCE)
  • Saints (Adel)

We haven't played Geelong, WCE and Colllingwood so if we lose the Carlton we will get one of those.  But I could almost guarantee that the AFL will substitute it with Collingwood to make round 10/finals placing 'more interesting'.  This gives us a more difficult draw than we would otherwise have and play more (all?) of the 2021 finalists.  Having said that we could dispense with Collingwood however the other teams will more likely allow us a bigger % boost which will be critical for finals 'Home' games.

Good luck to the AFL trying to convince another team to give up their round 10 opponent.  eg just can't see Brisbane or Adelaide respectively giving up their Richmond/Saints games which will be certain % boosters for them.

The AFL could have shuffled the round 9 and 10 games to solve this.  Maybe they didn't know they had a problem when they locked it in round 9.

I reckon the cleanest/fairest thing is let Freo and Bulldogs play each other again.

Surprised this is not getting any media attention.

Find it a bit interesting that there is a real push from Players to become full time and the season to be in the same months as the men.  The issue you face with playing the same time as men you would get zero coverage, the product appeals to Channel 7 and fox as there is nothing else to broadcast out side 2 weeks of Tennis and a bit of cricket.  Play it April to Sept your media exposure will be limited not just games on free to air by online and written media.

I do agree playing football in the heat of summer is silly, but it is there to give the AFLW the maximum exposure.

The Suns would be spitting chips over the redraw because, if they were still in the running, they would previously have had a game v Collingwood which might have been the decider. Instead, the Pies play the Tigers (notionally less difficult), the Suns and Bulldogs have tough games against Freo in Perth and Brisbane respectively. It’s almost as if the AFL want Collingwood in the finals for crowd attendance or other reasons.

The run home:  the-run-home

I have summarised the scheduled for ease of comprehension (8 pt games in red):

My thoughts:

  • I reckon Adelaide has top spot sewn up so am hoping they beat Freo this week.
  • All top 4 teams will win their round 10 games.
  • Unfortunately not gaining big % boosts vs lower teams has cost us ladder position (again) as other top teams have gained that boost.  So, to claim a Home final and have a pre-finals bye we need to finish top 2 which means beating North and Freo.
  • If I have the finals sequence right, to avoid Adelaide until the GF we need to finish 2nd or 3rd.

If  Freo to beat Adelaide this week and we win all 3 games. Top spot is ours! Unfortunately I can’t see that happening.

It all hinges on the dees vs freo and North vs Lions game this week!

We must beat Freo for 2nd spot.  Otherwise we lose it to Freo or Lions if they have a good win over North.  Lions have built up a fabulous % by thrashing lowly sides.  They will be desperate for that 2nd spot and the benefits that go with it.

Our poor percentage is going to cost us if we drop this week's game. It is likely the difference between 2nd and a home PF vs 4th and an away PF to Adelaide. Massive game.

GATOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS There were 5 in the main rehab group, namely Gawn, Petracca, Fullarton, Woewodin and Lever.  Laurie was running laps by himself, as was Jefferson.  Chandler, as has been reported, had his arm in a sling.  Lindsay did a bit of lap running later on. Some of the ''rehab 5'' participated in non contact drills and b

Better late than never … and quite frankly, there’s very little to report other than that training took place at Casey Fields this morning, that Tracc was there nursing his rib injury and that some photographs are on the club’s social media including this one of Clarrie in Raging Bull stance that gives rise for confidence. The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti

Welcome back to Demonland for those like me who have been on vacation. I’m posting this with some trepidation because of a certain amount of uncertainty surrounding the return of preseason training in 2025 after a flurry of weddings including those of our coach, one of our superstar players and a former premiership champion player and bloke, not to mention the recent mysterious incident that occurred on the Mornington Peninsula.  I believe that the team reassembles this morning at Casey Fie

When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50.
