The bulldogs were “agonisingly close” to a premiership , yet lost the grand final by 74 points ? 🤨

This is the Doggies achilles heel. If theybelieve they 'nearly could have' won it.

Lucky to beat the Lions, and key players exposed in GF (Liberatore, McCrae - for ability to hurt)- , Naughton, Johannasen )- critical errors) - , rucks, Bontempelli's inability on field to gather the troops and strategise for Petracca and jackson (not awake to the 3rd 1/4 moments), and earlier games by Dees strategy. Copied by other teams near the end.

Still can be seond best team in 2022 though.

Besides Martin coming back from injury, I can’t see where the big improvement is going to come from. Certainly not from what they pick up in the draft. They may uncover some gems but they will still need a couple of preseasons to make an impact.

Martin missing was critical to their fall this year, and highlighted the lack of depth and talent.  Cotchin is well and truly finished.  Nankervis can't jump off the ground any more and Soldo is a poor mans second option.  Getting rid of Chol was nonsensical with the injury clouds hanging over these two rucks.

Agree with all above -esp. rebounding after losing both Astbury and Houli and with two average rucks with no depth. Additionally, Dusty was injured in the Round 18 win vs Brisbane. He didn't play the last 5 games, and Richmond were already toast by that point.

I wonder what Dermie's analysis of our 2022 injury list will come up with.

Martin played 16 games and was injured in round 18 when the tigers where 8 and 9. Richmond supporters and others think he missed the entire year and was the reason Richmond missed the eight. The tigers where more than likely missing with or without a Martin injury.

My evaluation of Richmond this year is of a side who clearly placed too much reliance on too few players, and therefore were struggling when injuries hit.  I think a big factor on their performance this year was the fact 2020 finished so late, and they didn't have much of a chance to recover, or put in place an effective preseason.  I predict they'll be back in the finals, but to predict them to be premiers as Dermie did is ridiculous.

People forget they finished 5th on the ladder.

Rolls Royce midfield but defensively suspect. Unless they find some better defenders they can't win imv

Dermie played his entire career with a punctured brain.

Has not hindered his career in the media one bit.

Bless him.

RR midfield that doesn't run both ways to defend and therefore put their backline under pressure.

We exploited that mercilessly in the last part of the 3rd (Premiership) and 4th quarters.  They maintained CB setups to attack and when they woke up to what was going on it was too  late.  Game virtually over at 3/4 time.

Its the same problem we had.  It wasn't until our midfield learnt to defend (roll back, run both ways, zone to protect space, tackle hard) that our back 6 had a fighting chance to keep op score to approx 60pts, which they achieved in nearly every game, incl each final.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
