This is my 5,000th post and hopefully swansong, as I try to ween myself off my dependency on this wonderful site and all you crazy friends and strangers.

As a break-out from another thread, let's have an old-school school-yard pick-for-pick to see who can draft the best team. Change thread title as applicable.

One of my all-time favourite posters in@picket fence is in. I propose three more challengers, and the cockier and more prominent the better.

I think 25 picks each, including three emergencies, with one later chosen as sub in the final teams. That works out to the top 100 players in the league.

Put your hand up if you want to challenge Picket. It might need a poll of its own, or could just default to seniority based on post-count.

The rules are as follows; draft order is determined by coin-flip. Two semis (1 v 4 and 2 v3 in order of who comes on board first), a final, and a run-off.

Each participant then gets to choose current AFL-listed players in order. Picks can be traded or swapped at any time throughout the process.

That is, before or during the selection phase. But all pick trades have to be offered publicly. Other posters can comment, and give their worldly advice.

Then, once all the players are selected, arrange them into a team-sheet, and we can set up another poll and argue about who selected the best team

Until February.

Yeah I'll challenge Picket.

Perfect. Lock it in. Picket vs WERRIDEE vs  . . ?  Just need two more challengers.

Adonski signed up! One more.

I have the feeling that you were the one @adonski who got me geared up for Laurie last year? Someone promoted him, and then I got fixated, and was over the moon when he came to us. Still huge hopes. And now that repeats with Goater. If so, I really respect your eye for talent.

So it's @picket fencevs @WERRIDEEvs @adonskivs one more . . .

@Whispering_Jack: the thread title referred to Picket Fence, not Kasaiah.

Once we get another volunteer, I'll flip the coins, and then you can all pick your teams.

What about Dazzle Davey36 or Uncle Bitter or Hemingway??

@dazzledavey36would be great. Uncle Bitter can't be trusted to take the process seriously, or around much else to be honest, but I would love to see one of our students of the game put their hand up, maybe @binman, @A F, or @Axis of Bob- just to balance out the personalities.

A fairer way to do the draft is 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 1 2 3 4 4 3 2 1 etc

I'll take it on recommendation.

I got impatient and flipped the coins.

WERRIDEE has the number one selection, followed by Picket, someone else, and adonski. I will adopt Old55’s suggestion for a more equitable draft system.

WERRIDEE 1, 8, 9, 16, 17, 24, 25, 32, 33, 40, 41, 48, 49,

Pickett 2, 7, 10, 15, 18, 23, 26, 31, 34, 39, 42, 47, 50

? 3, 6, 11, 14, 19, 22, 27, 30, 35, 38, 43, 46, 51,

adonski 4, 5, 12, 13, 20, 21, 28, 29, 36, 37, 44, 45, 52,

I won’t write out all the picks, but follow that system. Trading of picks as to drafting strategy is highly encouraged, but it has to be in the public forum. You can come up with your own team names if you want. One more recruit and we’re underway. Remember, team balance is important. We'll vote on the end results.

I don't watch enough football nowadays to compete, but I'll step in for now (as ?) until someone wants to take over my hand. First gambit: @picket fence, would you take 6 and 11 for pick 2?

Is it open now? I pick Max Gawn

Just now, Skuit said:

@WERRIDEE: you're ready to select your number one draft pick, if you want.

Yeah Max Gawn is my no 1.

Pick 11 and 14 for 5?

Max Gawn is the first player selected in the super-team draft. He goes to WERRiDEE.

Thought this thread was going to be about Kozi...

Sweet. We'll probably have to keep track of these trades ourselves rather than update the list every time. But for now,

WERRIDEE 1, 8, 9, 16, 17, 24, 25, 32, 33, 40, 41, 48, 49,

Pickett 2, 7, 10, 15, 18, 23, 26, 31, 34, 39, 42, 47, 50

Skuit 3, 5, 6, 19, 22, 27, 30, 35, 38, 43, 46, 51,

adonski 4, 11, 12, 13, 14, 20, 21, 28, 29, 36, 37, 44, 45, 52,

Done

According to the draft pick calculator,  adonski picked up the equivalent of pick 31 in this deal, or the likes of Bayley Fritsch. Who won? Who knows. Probably impossible to tell until all the hands play out.

Pick 2 in the super-draft, as expected, is Clarry to Picket Fence. Pick 3 is Petracca to Skuit.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
