The National Under-19 Championships were postponed in July. They are now planned for later this month and the new fixture has been locked in.

Hopefully, we’ll get the opportunity to watch the top players and a couple of MFC NGA prospects in Mac Andrew (Dandenong Stingrays/Victoria Country) and Andy Moniz-Wakefield (Northern Territory/Allies). The Allies have only been given two matches in the fixture. Fingers crossed that the country can contain Covid19 and end the lockdowns.

The WA government’s opening of its border with SA is timely for the elite young players from both states as it allows for the first game of the championships to take place on Sunday as planned. That leaves almost three weeks for the second game which remains highly unlikely given today’s uptick in the Victorian case figures.

Still, it’s likely that we’ll get to see some of the top end talent that will feature come the draft in November. Here’s a preview:-

It’s starting to feel a little bit like 2020 all over again. We have a lockdown that’s strangling Victoria and local community sport but in other states except NSW things are open. The players who are getting their opportunities in this game and others in their local competitions are getting far more opportunities to develop their games. I can’t see any of the games  take place involving Victorian teams until the end of September at best.

WA dominant at 3/4 time with a lead of 43 points. They have a really good mix with a winning midfielders with Josh Browne and Matt Johnson both looking like top 10 prospects. Corey Warner on a wing (brother of Sydney’s Chad) is a promising left footer on the wing. Their KP players are going to attract a lot of interest. Taj Woewodin is putting in a workmanlike performance.

SA disappointing with their name players Horne-Francis and Draper quiet although the latter just kicked a goal.

He played a nice game at half back/wing without doing anything outstanding. I think we should be able to pick him up in the middle to latter stages of the draft. The good thing for a player like him to train and play with the likes of Clarry, Tracc, Angus, Jack Viney etc. he’ll have the opportunity to develop over time. His father was a quick learner and if he follows suit, I think we have a good prospect.

Solid 29 point win to WA who mixed players around and let SA off the hook a little. Very impressed with their depth and surprised that so many of their players are underrated especially since one of their star midfielders in Neil Erasmus didn’t play through injury. Two of their other midfielders in Browne and Johnson currently sit in 18th and 20th place in Knightmare’s power ratings. I think there are going to be some changes when the pundits issue their September rankings.

Rookie

Assuming he nominates as father-son, the only way he’ll be a rookie is if no other club selects Taj in the main draft. He picked up enough of the ball and did well enough with it to suggest that he’s going to be our best f-s since Jack Viney.

This has been reported elsewhere but the cancellation of NAB League finals and national under-19 championship games involving the Vic Metro and Vic Country teams represents a big blow, especially for Victorian talent as far as draft selection and development of the cohort of players in this state from mid to late teens is concerned.

There’s a definite advantage to prospects from WA and SA who might still get another challenge match up if case numbers don’t affect their states. They might even get an Allies squad (minus NSW) if they’re lucky. And the race for individual state combines might run to the wire in the metro area in Melbourne which is going to make things tough for some of the hopefuls.

Judd McVee was named on the interchange for WA for this game which I watched as it was streamed live. I was mainly interested in two players - Taj Woewodin who I knew was going to be a Demon and for JVR who was close to best on ground and who I hoped would become a Demon. I didn’t notice McVee all that much but welcome to the club JMcV!

To get three players from a state side in these times is a great effort.
